Hey, I want to purchase a high powered laptop for: music and video editing (Using Ableton/Adobe premier pro). What would you recommend? I would like it to be able to run flawlessly even if I am running many tasks. My budget is around £800-1000 - but am happy to buy refurbished. What model would you recommend? Is the only difference between a 2019 model and a 2016 model is the aesthetic and touch screen? All help appreciated. I care about battery :)

Thanks for the review... I own one of these, I got it specifically for video editing while I'm out and about, in addition to my rig at home. I guess everyone has different experiences with their machines. First, my fingerprint scanner works 99% of the time, meaning it's pretty flawless for me, but who really cares? ;) I can get into the machine with a passcode if it suddenly didn't work, but I wanted to point that out. For me, it works really well. I know a lot of reviewers have echoed what you experienced. Also... I think the keyboard is awesome, simply because I have no issues with it at all, and so... it's a keyboard, and like all keyboards, if you use it for a few days, you'll get used to it, and it will be fine. It works, it's solid, it's comfortable, I have no issues. Again, I see other reviews that agree with you, but not here. I don't really think about the keyboard when I am working, which means it's a good keyboard. ;) The ports... they are really flexible, and to have thunderbolt is a really good thing. I use an external SSD HD, and the included dongle is perfectly fine, and so... who needs a bunch of ports that you never really use? ...and also, you think the micro sd is nothing? I'm not sure why anyone would say that, extra storage is always a good thing, and also really convenient if you have devices like a smartphone, (which is the most people) and you need an easy way to drop files into the machine. Just pop the card in, and you're good. A great thing to have, and if you're a filmmaker, it's really necessary, at least to me. Finally, performance is really everything to me, and this machine runs Davinci Resolve really well, especially when you are using an external HD to read and write your video and audio. It's actually amazing to have a light little laptop like this run a pro editing software program like Davinci like that. As you said, Premier runs well, too, but I can speak for Davinci, it works pretty flawlessly. The only time it slows down at all is when I get into some serious color grading, but that will happen in machines with much higher specs as well, and it still doesn't crash, it still works, and so...... I'm happy with it. Having said all of that, I HAVE had some weird issues with the machine since I got it, and really stupid ones that have annoyed me, like........ my headphone jack didn't work at first, and I had to update drivers for 3 hours to get it to work. Now it's working fine, but that was a pain in the butt, especially after spending approx $1500 for the machine. My headphone jack doesn't work? Really? lol. Then... my touch screen...... I often have to re start the machine to get it to work. Not a huge deal, but annoying, and again, seriously? You can't figure out how to fix that on a machine like this, with these specs? I got tired of talking to tech support about these ridiculous issues, and so I just live with the occasional re start, and otherwise, i'm really happy with the machine. As a 2 in 1, I don't think I'll really use it that way all that often, but it's nice to have the option, but for what I really need it for, it works like a champion, and so, for whatever it's worth, I highly recommend it, if you are the kind of person who can deal with "quirks", like I mentioned in this post. Quirks, that, at the end of the day, don't really matter when it comes to getting the work done that you need to do. thanks for the cool review, and keep up the great work. Stay safe out there, wherever you are. peace.....

I own the 1080p i7 32GB ram config and I would disagree with your review on some points. Keyboard would come down to a matter of preference. I actually really like it and prefer it over my old Macbook air. It does not feel cheap at all and I like the clickiness of it. The backlight on the keyboard is perfectly fine. The light has a cool tone to it without being obnoxiously bright in the dark, also I do not notice any inconsistencies with the light. I agree on the port situation, but I'd rather have a 3rd USB type C port instead of a type A or an HDMI. My system definitely does not take long to charge. There might be something wrong with your device. The webcam is crap, but I don't use it or care for it. I still the think the system is worth the money for all the other features despite the webcam. Holding the system in tablet mode is really not an issue, from your video I can't tell the difference between the HP and Dell when you held them in tablet mode. I don't game so I can't comment on the gaming component. I'm actually not impressed with the speakers, so we'd disagree on that as well. When I first got the system, the user experience felt a bit finnicky, but I googled a lot of stuff and it came down to adjusting drivers, power options, and settings. The trackpad is fine, but small compared to Macbooks. I bought a logitech mx anywhere which is great.

Speaking of dongles, a multi-port dongle w/HDMI, USB-C PD passthrough and RJ45 is £20-25 and can fit into the carry case - but this is supposed to be an ultra-portable, I'm not sure why (at least for my typical use) you're going to want to plug a lot into this?

I got one of these in late September (same specs but w 4K display and win10 pro for Docker, WSL, and some other software) and I am personally very pleased with it. For productivity it is pretty darn good when coupled with the awesomely tiny form factor, and on battery it never exceeds the minimum temperature which requires the fan to spin up unless I'm doing a lot of data processing or running local tests in tensorflow. I don't do any gaming on it so I cannot comment on that performance, however 4 desktops with enough productivity software to nearly max the 16gb of ram plus an embarrassing number of chrome tabs doesn't even phase the machine. I ordered an active stylus for taking notes once I head back to grad school but even drawing by hand or with a regular stylus is very responsive and satisfying. If the keyboard is a large detractor for you, check one out in store and give it a few clicks before ordering, but I feel that when coupled with a $60CAD USB-C multi-adapter to eliminate the port concerns plus the aggressive sales that Dell always seems to have (I personally saved $450CAD at checkout off the $2800CAD sticker price), this is a pretty solid value proposition for 13in ultrabooks.

I'm not sure what is your base of comparison here, but paying almost 3k CAD for a laptop the size of a tablet that hasn't got a proper keyboard, has very poor camera and audio quality and no ports is insane even for Macbook territory - and at least you get a full laptop that maintains its value with Apple. Despite what they said in the video, I maintain that the keyboard is genuinely nice to type on, even compared to my regular keyboard which has MX greens. Additionally, a lot can be said for the combination of build quality, speed, and form factor. Very few products check all of these boxes, and it is excellent for something like graduate school which requires much more than just a tablet for taking notes (biomedical engineering specifically contains a lot of computation). In terms of specs, you would be hard pressed to find anything in this form factor, even clamshells such as the Macbook Pro or MS Surface Laptop, for as competitive of a price. To get a 1 TB SSD you have to opt for the UHD display and 32 GB RAM! I want the 1 TB as the SSD is soldered on but not sure the upgrade to UHD from FHD is worth it or needed. Any thoughts on the benefits of UHD screen when compared to the FHD screen? To do so puts you in the $2500 range Yikes. Thanks Updated: 12-12-2019. I ordered the spec system referenced above from the Dell Outlet at a substantial savings but was disappointed. The 4K screen kept flickering and during HD streaming color banding was crazy bad! I testing the same feed over WiFi on my phone, tablet, and Samsung MSI GS65 and the color banding was not present. The fingerprint reader is a waste and rarely works! I reset three times and took my time using it but 9 out of 10 times I had to use my PIN. The keyboard just streaming and doing productivity work got to HOT to type on comfortably? Even after changing the Thermal settings from Ultra Performance (How it Came) to Balanced it was still too HOT. Dell also sent me the White Keypad version by mistake. You cannot see the Key using the backlighting! They are easier to see with the lighting off. I wanted the Black Keypad for this reason. Had to completely remove the Killer Apps which is needed for all Dell / Alienware systems that have Killer internet cards. Once you remove all the Killer suite software and only install the drivers the network works much better. I have had to do this for every Dell / Alienware system for the past year and half?? Really. When you call tech support they know all about it and have you do the same thing. The SSD performance was subpar and you are stuck with it because it is soldered on. For this level of system Dell should use a better performing SSD. I was not able to tell the difference between the 1080P and 4K UHD screen. In fact the 4K screen was washed out and as I working mostly with 1080P media and items the system had to convert it to 1080P which I think is worse than staying with a native 1080P screen option. The keypad, Hum sometimes it felt good and then it as I picked up my typing pace I could not continue without to many mistakes. For me the key feedback and travel were not there. It is possible you could get used to it but the layout is good. The touchpad is great. It is possible the Outlet system I received continued to have issues Dell did not catch before releasing it for resale. Based I the system I had I would not recommend the 4K screen. It does have HDR but it did not translate to better picture quality on the system I had. I did have the 512GB - FHD screen model but wanted more SSD space and had both the FHD and UHD models to check out. Surprisingly the FHD (1080P) looked much better and did not have the color banding present on the 4K model. Still looking for a good 2-in-1. Just in case I had an bad Dell Outlet system I ordered a new 4K, 1TB, 32MB system. Well it had the same issues as listed above. I did determine that enabling HDR made a big difference in the stream video quality but not for the better. In fact it made the screen much darker and introduced the color banding making everything unwatchable! With it off the stream was better but not even close to how it looks on a phone or tablet! The battery life was 4 hours just sitting there with just popping back and forth between the web and doing updates! The hit to the battery life is not worth the 4K; which doesn't seem to be an upgrade from the 1080P.

Am I the only one that is experiencing terrible Wifi performance on this thing? On my device the reception ist just terrible, as soon as I am not sitting right next to router. To make matters worse, a bad Wifi reception somehow induces terrible crackling noises and random disconnects on any bluetooth audio device, that I have been using so far (Bose Soundlink Mini, Bose QC35, JBL DUET NC BT). If I have strong Wifi or Wifi is turned off, Bluetooth is fine. I have experienced these problems in many different scenarios and with many different routers. Dell Support has not been helpful and is just making me jump through the hoops. I love everything else about this 2-in-1(especially the keyboard, lol), so I would really hope, that my device is just faulty and this is not a general problem. So if you happen to own one of these, please tell me about your Wifi/Bluetooth experience. Greetings

Completely remove the Killer suite and apps using the Killer removal tool and then only reinstall the Killer Driver and it will dramatically improve. Ok maybe not dramatically but it will improve. The system does seem a bit weak on WiFi reception compared to similar units used in the same proximity.

It's the best keyboard I've experienced on a laptop or ultrabook. What I don't like is the page-up and page-down keys being right on top of the cursor keys. It's to easy to bump them. Also it's actually not very light weight.

I was between the XPS 13 2-in-1 and the HP Spectre x360. My biggest concern was all the negative feedback on the maglev keyboard, so I went into Best Buy to try them both out. It took me just a few clicks to realize that the maglev keyboard on the XPS felt LEAGUES better than the cheap, wobbly keys on the Spectre. I barely noticed the shallow keystroke (we're talking like half a millimeter difference here), and the magnets really help give some good feeling resistance and feedback the typing experience. Everyone's complaining, and I don't know why!

@alexeiz5 жыл бұрын
I don't know about the keyboard. I haven't used Dell XPS 2-in-1, but I did use HP Spectre x360, and although its keyboard has quite a bit of travel (for a laptop), I make quite a bit of mistakes typing on it, so I don't think that keyboard is any good. On the other hand, I'm now using a laptop with less keyboard travel and surprisingly I make less mistakes. So it all comes down to a personal preference and maybe a typing style.
@ahmadhusaini84205 жыл бұрын
Spectre has weird placement and xps has a perfect size. Just because the travel distance, it is not the end of the world. I prefer not cramping my fingers than having travel distance. And yeah spoiler alert; ive been using mechanical keyboard since 8 years and so already, from Ducky to Pok3r. Travel distance of a membrane keyboard is wack at best.

I agree on the criticism but most of the problems are directly connected to the size of that thing. The biggest part of the case barely fits the headphone jack. It is just not possible to get full size ports on a device with that size. The short keyboard travel and the thermal problems are obviously also directly related to this. While as I said all the criticism is valid, imo that's just how it is when you want a device of that weight, form factor and functionality. At the time being at least.

I think this review is a bit biased. For one, the typing experience is subjective. This an Apple style butterfly keyboard but without the reliability problems. I personally enjoy the snappy solidness of it. It goes along with the tactility of the solid, thin metal slab we like in ultraportables. Objectively, typing speed is the same, and I think it comes down to personal bias in what people are use to with conventional keyboards. I prefer the clicky solid feel. Secondly, those are two thunderbolt type c ports. This is future proofed, external GPUs will become a lot more common and affordable, type A will become obsolete, and all the legacy I/O can reach a desktop level with a dock. Its not like I’m missing the Ethernet ports of laptops from the past. With cloud storage, nobody should be using flash drives regularly (it’s recommended against in a lot my classes now), the micro SD is still there for photographers and such, and the thunderbolt option is amazing for external SSD’s where external storage will realistically be utilized. For everything else that connects with a cable, I can just buy the right cable.
