It is not a plastic lightweight and the all metal build gives it a decent bit of weight but there is no way anyone should have trouble carrying it in a laptop bag or backpack. Had a look at a 15" but for me the extra screen size on the 17" is well worth the extra money. The issue with the ports is moot in many cases since dell started putting hubs on their monitors. I have a Dell 32" S3221Qs 4K monitor. I have my mouse and external keyboard connected to the hub in the monitor. I then connect the UDB cable for the monitor to the dongle and connect to the USB C on the laptop. This gives me a one-cable connection to the laptop. The dongle is small and convenient, and this setup means I don't need an HDMI connection cable either. (I do have one since I dock several laptops to this monitor on a regular basis. The other item is power. The USB thunderbolt connection doesn't supply enough power to keep the laptop recharged. I was connecting in a dual monitor setup with a D3100 Dell dock and that worked well but since I no longer have a dual monitor configuration, I eliminated the dock. So,, I connect through the supplied transformer.
