Actually Della Reese and Mahalia Jackson debuted around the same time. Della Reese definitely had a church upbringing but her earlier work were show tunes, movies, and broadway which she performed effortlessly.

@@trentjohnson3302 Mahalia was born in 1911 and debuted in the mid to late 20s. Della was born in 1931 and debuted in the 40s. They definitely didn’t debut around the same time - they were a generation apart… Mahalia was instrumental for introducing Della to a wider audience gospel-wise. She happened to invite a then 13 year old Della to join her as she toured 3 cities as the lady that was supposed to accompany her in tour was heavily pregnant at the time. So in a way , Mahalia was like an aunt figure to Della who helped her start her musical career at least in gospel .

If I’m not mistaken, Della Reese was only about 14 or 15 at the time. This is Wayne Mahalia Jackson was already a big star. So your comment was a little ignorant. However, I’m assuming you haven’t just done the research. If I’m not mistaken, Mahalia Jackson was older than Della Reese’s mother.
