I’m so sorry that happened to you. Most kids do not scream when an adult is commanding over them. I can’t remember the name of the specific serial k*ller/child r*pist who said this but after his conviction, he gave some advise for LE to pass on to the public, which was to teach your children to scream when grabbed by an adult. Because so many of his victims he was able to nab in daylight, off busy street with witnesses watching because everyone assumed he was their parent when they didn’t scream when he grabbed their arm to lead them away. The very few times that a kid scream, he immediately let go and ran away. It’s so frustrating to hear a defense weaponize the issue of screaming in terrifying situations like this that are hard for the unassuming victim to even wrap their mind around when it’s happening.

John, no one is saying RA should not be in jail. Anyone arrested for this type of crime should not have bail and be in jail until trial. @Su_aSponte2 ай бұрын
@@jaybee5466 exactly. It’s dismissive and insulting when people try to act like those of us who doubt Allen’s involvement in this heinous crime are somehow rooting for his immediate release. Not true. We understand that he stands accused of the most serious of crimes. The public must be shielded at the same time as the defendant needs to have their Constitutional rights shielded. We need jails and we have a lot of them. What we need more is competent psychological care, and humane treatment for the accused. We need due process for Mr. Allen because I need it, you need it, and everyone who ignores this message may truly need it someday. His unlawful treatment is a separate yet related issue. It should never have been allowed to happen in the first place and must never be allowed to happen to a United States citizen, ever. So, why did it happen? Is Indiana run by Constitution hating assholes? Probably not. How about Carroll county tho? Asking why is never a bad thing but you have to take the answers whether you like them or not if you are dedicated to truth and justice. So yes the issues are separate but illustrative of the deeper issues in Delphi, such as the pervasive devaluation of human life and liberty. The presumption of innocence is our right and the protection of the public is the government’s duty and interest. So, jail and attorneys before a fair trial and judgement. It’s imperfect but it works without obliterating a citizen’s rights before they have even had a chance to face their accusers. This Mr. Allen was/is an average citizen. He’s no hardened criminal. He is gainfully employed. He loves his mother, sister, wife, and daughter. He has a mental health diagnoses which he manages with the proper meds and close family relationships. When you take everything that keeps this kind of man sane away from them overnight…wouldn’t it be more shocking if he wasn’t suicidal? Keeping someone isolated, messing with their meds, and gaslighting them about being a child killer…of course they will deteriorate and become confused, self destructive, and desperate. Having no power to soothe, protect, or defend yourself sounds like a waking nightmare. He may have needed protection from others and himself for a time but without accompanying, effectual treatment, support, and hope the suicide watch is worthless for anything other than draconian punishment. There needs to be an end in sight. Imagine nothing you can do will change the hell of your situation. Month after month after month you are still utterly alone. The only people you see regularly don’t exactly care if you live or die. It’s too much for the cognitively healthy person. How much more challenging can we expect it will be for a diagnosed depressive/dependent personality? I just can’t understand Dr. John working so hard to defend an indefensible human and Constitutional rights violation. It doesn’t even sound like him. There seems to be some cognitive dissonance and bias in favor of law enforcement and we all hold him up as smarter and better than that. My personal theory is that he is working on this profile from an assumption of guilt and so is unable to see certain facts because of that bias. He has historically analyzed convicted or, at least, clearly guilty criminals. This one is a different animal though. It just won’t fit in that one person box…

@ yo I hear your justifications but I promise you you’re on the wrong side of history and human dignity to keep defending the way this American citizen has been treated by his government. American citizens are not to be held in prison with dangerous convicts before they have been found guilty in an American court of law having had zealous representation and advocacy in the form of a knowledgable officer of the court who fights to insure the people do not overcharge, over punish, exploit, trick, or violate your Constitutional rights. Solitary confinement has been proven to cause all kinds of cruel and unusual harm to human beings especially when extended beyond thirty days. When you are found guilty you may lose your Constitutional rights for the duration of your sentence but it is still illegal for others to abuse, harm, or kill you, a human being. And it’s definitely illegal for them to treat you in that manner when you are only accused and not yet found guilty of a crime. This man’s treatment should alarm and outrage anyone who understands the five hundred ways in which it is wrong and could happen to anyone if we the people don’t hold them accountable. Just shrugging and downplaying the seriousness of it may only be a small expression of callousness but you know what happens when you give the devil an inch…he’ll take a mile.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to Lauren and Dr John for the brilliant insights they shared during this marathon, 3+ hours Live show. Dr John's thoughts on Richard Allen's confessions alone, were utterly compelling. Allen's confessions do NOT have the flavour or context of false confessions, as his supporters claim. Rather, as Dr John explained, it's clear he was begging his wife and his mother to hear him and accept the awful truth that he murdered two children, and to LOVE HIM JUST THE SAME. This rings powerfully true, and brought to my mind an infamous British murder case of over 30 years ago, the child-on-child killing of two year old James Bulger. A pair of 10 year old boys abducted toddler James (out shopping with his mother), walked him two miles to a deserted railway track, and tortured and killed him there. Both boys were swiftly identified and taken into custody, thanks to CCTV footage. In police questioning, the 10 year old killers initially denied any involvement in the heinous crime. But ultimately one of the boys confessed to his mother in the interrogation room. Crucially, he had prefaced his confession to her with the question: "If I did it, will you still love me?" As fearful as she must have been at the sickening revelation to come, to her credit his mother urged her son to tell the truth, reassuring him that she and his father would always love him no matter what, and nothing would ever change that. That child was expressing exactly the same sentiment Richard Allen did, when he shared his terrible truth with his wife and mother. But unlike that little boy's mother, Allen's closest family would not give him the reassurance of unconditional love he sought from them. In stark contrast, Richard Allen's wife and mother would NOT hear him, instead they shut him down and did not allow him to own his crime. The late, great Dr Maya Angelou had a wonderful piece of wisdom, which sums this up perfectly: "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time". Richard Allen has shown/told us who he is repeatedly. It will be beyond ironic if, like his closest family, this jury shuts their ears to the truth he has shared over 60 times, and acquits him. Lauren - Yet again you have proved your credentials as a top journalist. You worked tirelessly and diligently throughout this trial, and your daily reports were the gold standard. You deserve a lazy Sunday while the Jury's off, and I sincerely hope you'll spend it with your feet up, being waited on by your two gorgeous men! Love and respect from the UK.

Murderers have personalities and behaviors just as varied as those who will never harm another soul. Some people that commit murder can be very kind, loving people that raise children and take care of their family. Thats the spectrum of human behavior. Now put an already mentally unhealthy person in those circumstances; they are much more fragile .. OF COURSE, he would become psychotic. Yeah, not to mention the stimuli he WAS getting was incredibly damaging to his already low self esteem/knowledge of & confidence within his establish self identity. He was isolated (no longer had the support his wife provided & of which he was dependent on) those around him were calling him baby killer & telling him she should unalive himself (horrible for his fragile self esteem) CRACK psychotic break .. If i was on the jury, I'd probably vote not guilty. I don't trust the confession, and without that, there's really no evidence. I appreciate, but dont agree with, Dr Johns perspective. I feel his bias coming through. For every "expert" there is another "expert" with an opposite point of view. So as long as there are two opposing "expert" points of view that means their opinion is just that, an opinion, not fact. In our court system, when 2 things are opposing but equal, then the point has to go to the defense. Justice isn't just for victims. it's for everyone. Prosecuting an innocent man is a bigger injustice to society than murder. Do I think there was some great plot to railroad RA? idk. I think it may be a case of a societal sacrafical lamb. To quench the communities' calls for blood, somebody had to go down. As the years went by and the thirst for blood grew, the police become less and less concerned with solid proof and more concerned with someone, anyone paying. FYI, my husband worked for years as a prison guard in a super max prison, and people in solitary often get books, tvs art supplies, etc. There's a big difference in the psychology between doing time in solitary when you're convicted and when you're only a suspect.

Please don't minimize the torturous effects of solitary confinement by saying that “I’m sure he felt he was tortured”. Anyone would feel tortured being isolated for 120 months.. the science indicates that as human beings, more than two weeks is inhumane. The occasional phone call and visit from a therapist would not be enough for most people for that length of time. BTW, i'm not suggesting he is innocent. I really don't know. But he was tortured before the trial. What happened to being innocent before proven guilty
@michellelee72302 ай бұрын
The whole innocent before being proven guilty is a legal principal meant for the mindset of the jury and also a legal precedent for defendants in relation to situations to their assets being confiscated by the government. Clearly LE do not think he is innocent since they indicted him and the facts of the crime RA was accused rises to a level where he is not offered bond before the trial because he’s a threat to the public and he’s placed in solitary for his own safety since this high profile, horrific crime against 2 underaged girls puts a target on RA in the eyes of fellow prisoners. BK has been in solitary with no bond since his arrest for the Moscow, ID college student murders for almost 2yrs now and he’s fine. This is protocol for these kind of horrific, senseless violent crimes. And we, the public, are safer for it.

@@HiddenTrueCrime True…but the defense attorneys aren’t RA either. They seem to be more credible than Judge Gull, the prosecution, law enforcement and RA. The defense attorneys say he was mistreated and delusional so as a juror I’d have to give that more weight. Now if Gull seemed to be fair, or I heard Dr John’s analysis…I’d have a different opinion-if I was a juror. Judge Gull didn’t allow any 3rd culprit evidence in from the defense-the defense might have had alternative theories of the crime but we don’t know (if the claims were ridiculous assertions, the jury would see through them, so why exclude them?); she ruled in favor of the prosecution 90% of the time (I’m just left to assume reports are correct here); she wouldn’t give the defense the same time to present their case (or anything close to the same amount time she gave the prosecution); she wouldn’t allow video accommodations for a defense witness who couldn’t travel; she fired RA’s defense attorneys in a private, closed-door, shady fashion; she limited public access to the trial in every way she possibly could (which totally flies in the face of the American open-court Justice system); she even told witnesses not to speak into the microphone so the gallery wouldn’t be able to hear testimony. Judge C Gull has infused suspicion into every fiber of this trial… All that said, not believing RA’s confession because I don’t believe law enforcement and the court were acting in a fair and honest manner… well…the irony isn’t lost on me. Dr John has certainly given me pause to think about it though. Thank you Hidden True Crime for your dedication and insights. Genuinely, I’m at a conscious pause at this point.

As a jury, your responsibility is to determine whether the evidence presented by the prosecution satisfies the charged criminal offenses beyond a reasonable doubt. Meaning the prosecution must convince the jury that there is no other reasonable explanation that can come from the evidence they presented at trial. The burden of proof rests solely on the prosecution. All the defense has to do is create possible doubt.. which they absolutely have done.. None of the evidence the prosecution presented is solid or even irrefutable. All they have is a confession... and the defence provided multiple scenarios/explanations for why people have given false confessions.. which creates doubt on the validity of the prosecutions only real piece of evidence. Btw I'm not saying this as someone who believes RA is innocent.. I do believe he could very possibly be guilty. But I absolutely would not be able to convict him based on the facts presented (my emotions and gut instinct aside). The unfortunate truth is that the prosecution failed to prove his guilt without a reasonable doubt..

While Dr Walla, may as a therapist be ethical to watch true crime, she still potentially tainted the main evidence against him, the confessions. It was totally inappropriate in this situation to share information with him that she had gathered, and also potentially influencing her own opinions and treatment of him, this is speculating but I would find it hard to believe that she wasn’t influenced in some way by her research and interest in the case, to what effect we will never know. There was a massive conflict as she wasn’t treating an ordinary person, but someone who is accused of a crime and awaiting trial. Also, would be interested to know what inside knowledge she was potentially sharing while participating in online discussions. I think it was the correct decision that she no longer treats people in that setting. Her lack of judgement on this undermines her testimony to me

@ Well, it was known that she followed the case and participated in online discussions on the case, which involved one of her patients. She did this before and during her time working with RA. She also discussed aspects of this with him, per her own testimony. At a minimum this was that he had people that supported him. She visited the ‘crime scene’ in terms of the bridge. I believe this is all known from her testimony but I could be wrong. I would struggle to find her credible on this basis, from the sheer bias potential this presents, she may not even being aware of this bias and it is based on her own actions. I personally would take her opinions and interpretations given in testimony with a pinch of salt. It just added to the general tone of unprofessional handling of many aspects of the case to me. Just my opinion and I appreciate we won’t all see things the same way. Edited to add: I’ve no reason to doubt her qualifications, or knowledge of her trade. I’ve just read your previous reply, I agree professional development is important. I think I’m more concerned about the ethics of researching and having what appears a great personal interest in this case, while also treating someone involved in it. There needs to professional boundaries and I think these were blurred in this situation.

I live not far from Delphi and have followed this case since the night the girls disappeared. I am just disgusted by this entire thing. I'm disgusted that mental health struggles are so heavily stigmatized. I am disgusted by the garbage mental health resources in the US. What would have happened if RA received the mental health care he has so desperately needed his entire life? I absolutely believe RA is guilty, but he is also a victim, and that is true of the majority of people that have been incarcerated. RA has likely received the most comprehensive mental health care he has ever had, but had to be sent to prison to get it. I am disgusted that no one is going to be held accountable for the fact that RA stated early on that he was there on the bridge and that information was mishandled. The family has suffered for years. The community is damaged. People's lives have been destroyed by accusations. I am disgusted by RAs former employers who *knew* RA was sexually harassing his co-workers, but instead of doing something about it, they just transferred him to another store. I am disgusted by the prison system. You can't expect people who are treated like animals to act better than animals. I am disgusted that faith has been lost in LE and the judicial system because so many mistakes were made. There are no winners here. Even if convicted, everyone still loses.

I'm a podcast listener and this episode was just uploaded. I have to say, John comes off as biased in this one. I'm not someone who's out here going "there's no evidence at all to say the Allen did it," but I do have doubt. And, in my opinion, from what I've seen, there's an argument that Allen's constitutional rights were violated. Yes, you lose constitutional rights when you murder someone, but Allen was innocent until the verdict came back. So he had those rights and they were arguably violated. John is right that not all evidence is equal, but I disagree with how he weighs things. I don't have much trust in the testimony of the warden or the guards. No one is ever going to testify that they tortured someone or violated their constitutional rights. And if they were going to say that, the prosecution wouldn't call them. To me, holding an innocent person in prison with zero privacy (24 hour surveillance even in the bathroom), constant light, and (likely) frequent taunting and harassment from inmates/guards is a form of torture. And at the time those things happened, Allen was innocent. Also, I am curious about the dependent personality disorder. Is it possible that Allen confessed to his wife because he wanted the torture to end? And he thought if he confessed it would be over? I understand he wants to please her, but maybe his desire to end the torture superseded that. I'm curious as to John's thoughts on that. I also wish the false memory theory had been explored more. I think the defense put a lot into the Odenism theory and then couldn't make it so they scrambled to come up with something else. But I have heard from other attorneys that they've had cases where the state convinces their client that they committed a crime that they absolutely didn't do. We know that false memories can be created and that's why we changed how we interview children who have potentially been abused. But we didn't change interrogation tactics. I wasn't on the jury. I wasn't in trial. I don't know what happened to those girls and I can't know because I wasn't there. I do know that from what I've seen, I have a lot of questions. (This is also why prosecutors don't generally want attorneys on the jury, we always see doubt lol)
