My uncle, nautically inclined, upon the conclusion of his service in the US Navy in 1946, came home to Cape Cod and bought a boat. It was a sail boat. Specifically a sloop. He named it after his grandfather who took him sailing as a boy and was also a veteran of the US Navy when the Union fought the Confederacy. His first name was John and his last initial was B. So not aware of the song made famous by the Beach Boys though much older than that, my uncle had a sloop named John B. Fast forward to my childhood. I had just graduated kindergarten and so I had the long summer vacation to look forward to and I was invited to spend a couple of weeks of that with my cousins, aunt and uncle. Naturally my uncle took us all sailing. The first time I heard this song was while sailing in a sloop named John B. My uncle had it played every time he hoisted up the sails as he left the harbor. The song, the boat and the waters off Provincetown harbor were breathtaking separately but an almost religious experience when taken together. To this day I cannot hear this song without flashing back to that day in my childhood 57 years ago. RIP Uncle John.

What a beautiful memory. I was caught up in it, as it brought me back to my youth growing up on eastern Long Island. The summers were spent on the beach and the boats. ❤

I was at the festival that year and they were brilliant. They started sampling the mulled cider at the hot cider stand a lot, and we ran into them later that night and they were legless (we had to prop some of them up!). Next morning they were giving a workshop in club tent and they were so hungover some could hardly stand, let alone sing! Lovely bunch of guys who were just so surprised they had found fame

I was a small boy, 4 maybe 5, on Sundays my Scottish Grandmother always had me for a few hours to herself, Episcopal church at 8:15, tea with a few of her friends and the old Victrola playing old recordings. The lady who was my Grans best friend from Scotland asked me to pick a record, I didn't know how to read very well yet, but I saw a Kingston Trio record just like my older sister had. The song she played was Sloop John B. I remember my older sister "swooning" over the Beach Boys version. I liked it well enough, but the Kingston Trio version was "traditional"... they did a little JAH MAN type of Jamaican or Bahaman accent. The song is very old, a sea shanty of a type that no one has ever been credited for writing it. Carl Sandberg brought it to the worlds attention and had an arraignment done for the tune... Or so the story goes. Your version was the best I've ever heard, bit of the sea in me, 20 yrs US Navy.

I first heard the Lonnie Donegan version of this in the late 50's or early 60's and his will always remain my favourite interpretation. I particularly like the version with Van Morison on 'The Skiffle Sessions.' But it's interesting to hear it acapella - this has a nice nautical flavour, and I can see why people like it.
