Powering her in, chopping the throttles during the flare, then full reverse immediately after touchdown...man, today's jets aren't flown the same way. Love it!

I agree. Maybe it was flown by a former NWA pilot.

That wasn't anywhere near full reverse. Probably closer to 1.8 EPR. You can overboost in reverse on an airplane this old.

We'll never hear the sounds of those wonderful Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines anymore. From start-up to flaps lowering to landing and reverse thrust, what a unique sound!

When the first 9s took to the skies, lots of times they were landing on some small real estate, maybe 5,000', what the Convairs and Electras were using, even her older sister, the DC-3. Engineering gave pilots P&W's big, new fanjets on the back end of that short 9. Oh boy, what a blast. You needed all that to power away from those out-stations while still carrying enough inside to make some money. And - you could push the power up, then have a sip of coffee and glance at the newspaper headlines waiting for the engines to spool up. Sure, sounds like they're being punished on approach, but should someone decide he/she wants a second try at that landing, you want 'em already cranked up pretty good when you call for go-around or "full military power." It can come down to seconds for response - you can't climb out on hope. Why else have 40 or 50 degree flaps - higher power/ highest drag configuration when close to the Earth is why. When the 757 came along, it was a different world. Most of the runways it would go to were plenty long (8,000' +), so those high-bypass fans were to hurry you up to an altitude where you'd burn less gas - also credit that nice wing here, too. But a major difference with those big fans on a slick jet is keeping the speed down on descent - easy to get yourself in a bind - especially if ATC is poky, because the engines are still pushing even at idle. Except for contaminated runways, you could darn near bolt the reversers shut because approach speeds are so low - the wing, again. So - two different designs, two sets of capabilities, two different flying conditions.

A good video with good audio. History was recorded, as DC-9s are no longer flown commercially, at least in North America. Nice audio of those legacy fuel hungry engines.

@@DH111d if you know, what has happened to the landing reverse throttle feeling? why is there no big feel of reverse or the mistakable sound of it? is it just a smoother landing because of jet size?

Wonderful video!! This brings back great memories for this 61 year old. Oh my did I fly the DC-9!! First flight in 1968 between STL and EVV on an Eastern Airlines DC-9-14. I flew the "9" many times on Delta and Allegheny from my hometown. Also flew on Ozark and North Central/Republic and Northwest DC-9s many times. I loved low ceiling nights at my house which was on the final approach path to runway 3 at EVV, now runway 4. The EVV "PXV" Pocket City VORTAC was only 5 miles SW of my house out in a farm field near the Ohio River. Delta's evening DC-9-32 from IAH, SHV, and MEM would fly right over around 8:30pm. I would run to my bedroom window and hear the JT8D's throttle up watching the planes belly beacon light reflect in the clouds. Back then the airlines kept good schedules and you could set your clock by them, not any more. Delta even flew their DC-9-32 down to Paducah, KY, MEM, JAN, and MSY from EVV as well. I flew Eastern Airlines DC-9 30s over to SDF, just an 18 minute hop from EVV, hard to believe they flew on that 100 mile route. Fare was only $25.00 back then. I would visit my friends often just to fly on the "9". Thank you so much for posting this beautiful video with the priceless sound of those JT8D's. Love it!!!

Great video and audio, of these legacy DC-9's, a workhorse for most of the legacy airlines earlier on. A pretty sturdy, well-built jet airliner. Great audio and nice sounds from the JT8D engines. No longer available to fly on, as Delta retired the old NWA DC-9 fleet a few years ago.

Ahh, memories. I flew on the DC-9 many a time as a kid and a young man when North Central, then Republic then Northwest used them. DC-9-30s, -50s and MD80s. Hard to believe that they used to fly in to little old CMX Hancock/Houghton up here in the UP, almost seems like a dream. A wonderful jet it was.

I read somwhere that George Lucus used the DC-9 engine sounds for the Millenium Falcon with some additional audio effects. I love the sound of the DC-9 and of the Falcon. I can definately hear a similarity. 'The Escape From Mos Eisley' scene (Escape from Tatooine), love the sound of those engines.

Enjoyed the vid & ur right, GREAT engine sound. Forgive me but prior to watching the vid I thought u may have gotten the aircraft mistaken for a 717, which looks identical to the DC-9 as it's basically a DC-9-30 w/engine & avionics upgrades...but after watching the vid, checking out the wings & flaps, & listening to how loud the engines were, ur absolutely right...DC-9 all the way. I was just shocked to see this classic aircraft I grew up flying still in service in '10...Enjoyed the vid ;-)

Most Definitely an old DC-9, having flown on a few of them, mostly NW/ NWA DC-9s. NW (Northwest Airlines) is no longer in business, since being swallowed up a few years ago by Delta, closer to ten years ago. 717's, on back to MD-80 or MD-88 had different engines. MD-80 and 88 engines were "modernized" versions of old DC-9 engines, I believe.

Loved NW / NWA, when they existed, until swallowed up by Delta. NW was on time, timely and didn't lose or damage my luggage. Can't say the same for most other legacy carriers.

I've been flying 797s and DC-13s since before I can remember, just after the war, come to think of it, and to this day I can't think of a nicer proportioned wing to fuselage ratio and sweep as the dc-9. What a lovely plane! Both jet and prop/float variants are excellent all-weather planes in my book.

Hey Google! Where did Lucasfilm get the idea of the Millineium Falcons soundtrack? "The sound of the ship traveling through hyperspace comes from two tracks of the engine noise of a McDonnell Douglas DC-9, with one track slightly out of synchronization with the other to introduce a phasing effect.[6] To this, sound designer Ben Burtt added the hum of the cooling fans on the motion-control rig at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM)."
