This is the line-up, hold, takeoff and climbout of Delta Air Lines' final DC-9 flight - ever - DAL9944 to Charlotte. You'll see the penultimate one, DAL9960, depart off the parallel (26L) just before we are cleared for takeoff. The extended climbout and long left turn to the northeast are included. Turn up your speakers and enjoy the JT8Ds for the last time.

I love those engines. Loud and proud. No wussy quite engines mandated by the EU. And what a climb! Did the captain put that plane at a 45 degree angle going up? I wish I was on that flight. This video is worthy of my take off hall of fame. Any chance you have the entire flight?

Upon final takeoff, the last commercial DC-9 standing turned into a space shuttle and was launched into the stars forever. Legends say it still orbits earth to this day, instead of meeting its demise at a scrapping yard.

My first flight as a kid was on a Northwest DC-9-10 for short 20min flight from Saginaw to Detroit in the late 90s. I sat in the back seat next to my Dad with that same view. I instantly went from being nervous kid afraid to fly, to being absolutely hooked on aviation. That 30+ year old little DC-9 took off like a rocket, and I’ll never forget that beautiful engine noise. Thanks for posting

Could have been the same plane, as Northwest was bought by Delta... Funny thing is, it could be the same plane I flew in when I was a kid in the early eighties when it had "North Central Airlines" colors (and the duck) painted on it, later becoming "Republic Airlines" which merged with Northwest in 1987....

The DC-9 was one of the sleekest and most beautiful jetliners ever built. I flew on a lot of Delta DC-9s growing up, flying back and forth from Indy to W. Palm Beach FL. These birds could climb! I always loved sitting in the back to hear that awesome JT8D music, the whine and harmonics from each engine oscillating then syncing up; what an incredible sound. This really brings back memories. Thanks for the post.

I grew up next to two Southern Airways DC-9 captains who later moved on to bigger birds (later Southern merged with Republic, who merged with Northwest of course). This brings back a lot of memories! Great video. How luck you were to have experienced he final flight of this stalwart of the aviation world. Some of my most memorable flights were on the DC-9 and the 727. I would always sit right by the engine. That sound was music to my ears. Being needs to return those aircraft to production. I read an article some time ago that the off-lease MD-80 and 90 series are some of the most sought after aircraft in the secondary market. Some things never go out of style. Thanks for posting this video.

Oh my, I used to fly a lot on DC-9s back when I was a kid, that engine roar as they throttle up to take off power did bring back some good memories. One just can't argue about the advantages of the new-gen airliners, those new A320neo are comfy as heck, but those ultra-silent engines make them sound as a toy beside this.
