Police dash camera captures a near tragedy in the sky. A Delta plane taking off from Syracuse, New York, came dangerously close to an American Eagle jet that took off first. They came between 700 and 1,000 feet from each other. In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration says, "An air traffic controller instructed [the American Eagle flight] to go around at Syracuse Hancock International Airport to keep it safely separated from an aircraft that was departing on the same runway."

@@Avation.Experienceusually just demotion or termination. The only way they would explore criminal charges is it resulted in a fatal accident but even then they usually drop the charges and assign blame to a variety of factors like insufficient ATC company materials or functionality, as was the case in the Uberlingen mid air collision (there were problems with the system and only one controller, unfortunately the controller was murdered in front of his family by an estranged and mentally ill father of one of the victims).

A reminder to the general public that planes have something called 'TCAS' or Traffic Collision and Avoidance System, it notifies both planes when they get too close to each other, and directs one to climb and the other to descend to avoid collision. So, the worst you'll get is a near miss. Planes (for the most part) have a frick ton of safety systems to keep you safe.

Just from some quick geolocating, based off the camera angle, this happened about a mile west of the departure end of RWY28 at KSYR. Considering airliners typically fly instrument flight rules, the Delta flight was likely on the Syracuse Two Departure, which would have the pilot climb out on runway heading to 4000 feet before being vectored onto his requested course. Since the smaller American Eagle jet looked to be level, I doubt a collision would have occurred, as neither pilot had to evasively maneuver to avoid each other. The American Eagle jet likely has a higher climb gradient, hence why he was level while the Delta plane was still in the climb. I see two scenarios of fault: 1. ATC erroneously gave takeoff clearance to the Delta flight without ensuring proper separation or ensuring the American Eagle flight was given vectors to move away from runway heading. 2. The Delta pilot mistakenly believed he was given takeoff clearance (was actually told to line up and wait), was task saturated, and took off without checking in with ATC to be sure of his actions. Scenario 1 is more likely, as the American Eagle jet likely climbed to altitude, slowed to its filed airspeed, and was awaiting departure vectors when the Delta flight caught up to them. Still, this is a huge break down in crew resource management. The copilot could quite easily hop on comms and confirm their clearance, verify separation via ADS-B, or attempt to gain a visual on the American Eagle flight since the airport looks to be visual flight rules. Even though ATC is supposed to ensure separation of aircraft on IFR flight plans, it doesn’t relinquish the pilot of the responsibility to see and avoid, especially when the ability to do so is very much possible.

Reposting my top-level comment to clear some things up in this comment. I checked flight tracking history and ATC audio. The video got several details wrong. This incident happened on July 8 at 11:52am at Syracuse Hancock Intl (SYR), Syracuse, NY. American Eagle, Bombardier CRJ-900LR, tail N555NN, Bluestreak flight JIA5511: Took off from Reagan National (DCA), Washington, DC at 10:59am and on approach. The video said it took off at 11:40am. They said it took off "first", which is technically true, but about 40 minutes earlier from an airport 300 miles away. Delta, Bombardier CRJ-900LR, tail N927XJ, Endeavor flight EDV5421: Departed gate at 11:35am and took off at 11:52am for LaGuardia (LGA), New York, NY. The video said it took off at 11:43am en route to Washington, DC. ATC cleared American Eagle to land runway 28, then cleared Delta for takeoff runway 28 while American Eagle was on final. American Eagle noticed ATC's error and asked about it, after which ATC told them to go around. American Eagle then had an RA (Resolution Advisory from their Traffic Collision Avoidance System). The ADS-B tracks indicate American Eagle was about 700 feet above Delta at their closest. Delta continued climbing and American Eagle was flying level and started climbing in response to the RA.

Considering how disastrous an accident in the air can be, it’s really disturbing when there’s a lacking of maintenance and safety checks. Yea it’s rare for us to see when things fly off but we don’t see if every single time every one is doing their job or slacking off because they got away with during a subpar check x amount of times. This is one of those jobs where if you’re a lazy or sloppy worker there shouldn’t be a second chance since making sure to the best of your ability the plane is safe to fly should always be a 100% effort. Yea I know a lot of higher up bosses don’t care enough about those who fly and those who work under them but fliers shouldn’t suffer because of that.

What doesn’t make sense is why is that American Eagle plane so low in altitude 3 minutes after take off? The Delta plane is still in its initial climb. Which is far too low for an Aircraft that took off 3 minutes ago. The American Eagle plans should be thousands of feet in the air by now. We wouldn’t be able to see it. Other news media outlets says ATC usually gives a vertical separation of 700 to 1000 feet for aircraft but they didn’t have the horizontal distance between aircraft. Air space is 3 dimensional. Inside Edition assumed that was the only distance they were apart. The American Eagle plane in the video looks to be descending altitude. This contradicts the information that the American Eagle plane is taking off. I believe the American Eagle Plane was descending to land. I think the media got the ATC audio wrong. The voice must have been the American Eagle pilot who is questioning why the Delta plane got clearance to take off. They likely got clearance to land 3 minutes ago, and not taken off 3 minutes ago. ATC screwed up. Then media outlets like Inside Edition try to sensationalize it with limited information. 😒
