I hope merg sees this! One thing we found out is, that YOU are the soul. You can move the soul when getting thrown inside the cage. You save over Kris's savefile, they had one before saved. The first sprite you see is your red soul, and the voice also talks to the player, not kris. Your role in this game, is to literally be the player. To control Kris/their Vessel. Also, remember the character creation screen? There are many hints, that Kris is indeed "just a vessel" for us. One thing that I'm confused about though, is that the cage was already extremely damaged and had dried blood on the side of it, SO THIS ISN'T THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED. Also the fact that we are CONSTANTLY reminded that OUR choices don't matter. WE try to select things, and Susie interupts it. WE control what Kris does in battle, yet it didn't matter. We are not the one in control. Sounds familiar, doesn't it? Also, the leitmotiv "don't forget, I'm with you in the dark" is literally EVERYWHERE. Also, there are so many flippin gaster references, It's super spooky.

exactly! i was thinking these very thoughts! but im kinda confused about the character/player dynamic. i get the feeling there are 3 beings vying for control here. us the player, Kris the original human, and Chara the red soul that takes them over. i think that Chara is our means to connecting with that world but they are not us.also why was Chara/Red Soul in the void with who is most likely Gaster? how did he get that Soul? maybe he created it with Determination? he uses the Red Soul's power to connect with us and then infuses it inside Kris so we can control them. but he may not have taken into account that pure Determination would have a will of its own as well so that's who Chara is, a being of pure DT. we simply use their power to control Kris while Chara allows us to. but then perhaps at night when Kris is asleep and we are supposed to not be connected, Chara takes full control. if you check the door at the police station they immediately close the blinds upon seeing you/Kris. Kris is referred to as creepy by Rudy. maybe Chara's been posessing them for a VERY long time. i don't think they've hurt anyone yet but everyone is kinda unnerved by them. also yeah why are we constantly reminded our actions don't matter. all that was necessary was the post Toby made about there being only one ending in order to let us know that our choices don't matter. yet because that very fact keeps being brought up withing the game itself makes me. . . suspicious. honestly it wouldn't be the first time Toby totally subverted our expectations. maybe he's challenging us to try to make change. have you played OneShot?

I think Kris might be a girl. First, Lancer in chapter 2 says Cookie and Wife, though that may just be a joke. Second, Chara is a play on Character. Character sounds like Care-acter, not Chaar-acter, which means they would have the female pronunciation. And Frisk would be a girl just so that it’s not awkward that Chara is inside a boy. So if Kris fits the pattern, that’s be cool. Third, the things Kris, according to others, do seem more feminine. For example, hiding under Noelle’s bed. Though if they were young enough at the time, that could be negated.

Watched it again. merg is precious. Also the personal touch toby is doing with this game makes me feel so familiar with the setting, even though its alien to undertale. Kris' experiences with his broken home and brother leaving and stuff. Going home from school super late. The throne of the gods. Its like he hasnt forgotten those feelings either.

I think the reason this game has the same ending no matter the route is because Toby wanted to tell a definite "canon" story of his own. Undertale for choose-your-path, Deltarune for a more "canon" experience. Just my opinion.
