Ribbit is genuinely one of my top three favourite mods of any videogame. It very deceptively tricks you into thinking it’s just a shitpost mod and then once you hit the lodge it suddenly becomes a masterpiece of storytelling and it’s criminal that not many people know about it.

2:47:54 is my favorite scene in the mod. you’ve just become a lot more uncertain about who these characters actually are and want, then it hits you with the immediate triple whammy of susie jumping you out of nowhere, and… toriel. there’s mysterious, kind of eerie music in the background as she reviews YOU’s backstory never really stated in-game before this point, and asks if it’s really worth continuing at this point. “They’ll abandon you… just like I did. Some adventure.” it’s such a strange sequence of events that are only contextualized later and i absolutely love it

I just watched this all in one sitting and god has it fucked me up. This mod is like if you took deltarune and made it have a twisted fucked up child with the LISA franchise. Its mostly silly but deep down has lots of unnerving scary shit that comes to a head at the end.

sooo, im watching this VOD after playing ribbit, and at 1:36:15 i just had nothing. slug duck wasn't there and Noyno just said "what are we supposed to look at?", i also didn't have the choice at the gun bucket, idk what happened though, I'll have to replay it (its always the same i checked) so uh yeah im just gonna list em here 1:46:48 - different noyno dialogue, also stuff about torture, and then its all new stuff after that 1:50:01 - who the hell is that (there literally was nothing) 1:51:31 - i think that there was only lancer's bike, lancer and susie were abscent 1:53:35 - quizzer not working, hp extender troll abscent later fun fact: in my second playthrough, i just grinded WORRYSOME past this part. 1:58:19 - NPC's abscent, earthbound segment not there. 2:04:51- scene abscent, question minigame too, game asked to press Z for 1000 times to "not replay for genocide" i went to play ribbit on pacifist after, and yeah, that was the consequences of my actions, since i killed everything i saw, too lazy to continue now.

I got this mod because of shayy mentioning ribbit and went in blind. SPOILERS for the first 20 minutes of the mod!!! I made it to the dark world and am severely confused by everything and the entering dark world sequence was terrifying me. I went back when susie walked off and saw some weird version at the door that disappears if you go through the cutscene normally. I freaked out when I saw sonic and knuckles LMAO. I love the mod so far and I think it’s supposed to get significantly better soon? I’m honestly pumped to get through the rest of it lol

Honestly, people seem to greatly overestimate the subversion of Ribbit. It clearly was just meant to be a joke fangame, what with Susie saying overly meta "protag" comments and Toriel jumping out of windows...pretty sure the sudden stop to all jokes was an afterthought that got added later on to give the shootpost game more "depth". Kill Susie, amirite?

Nope! The subversion was planned from the very beginning. Noyno's exposition early on, every frog besides YOU being dead, Susie's outburst prior to impaling Lancer, "You don't actually miss her... do you?", or Lancer being revealed to be a robot (amongst him doing a quiz show), as a setup for the later Mettaton reveal, pretty much every MOTHERSPAWN design foreshadowing what the final boss will be... stuff like that was me planting hints, and setting up characterization which I wanted to later take advantage of, in order to build a mystery, and a story. But the real problem does still stem from the sudden-ness of the tone shift. I was having so much fun with the joke part of the mod, that I didn't correctly balance the serious parts into it, and kinda had to cram them in within as many rooms as i had remaining. Execution aside though, the plan was always to change Ribbit more and more into a character-driven story. The joke parts were to entice players to reach those moments.

@@wix-1-3dgcjt6 My personal view is that I could've handled the story better, but I'm still happy that I tried experimenting at all. I don't think I would've been satisfied with just a funny mod, there's more potential in the Deltarune modding scene than doing what's expected. On the other hand, it WAS me who set those expectations in the first place, so, y'know... it's a little on me, isn't it? Still, I think the final product has its place for a certain audience who likes having their expectations twisted. I'm one of those. I love a story where the ending is unrecognizable from the beginning. Some won't like that, or how it was executed, but... that's okay. I'm glad you still liked some of it.

​@BeholdMaxine I read this thinking this comment was a passionate defender and then I realized it was a dev. I just like, an hour ago finished ribbit. I'm probably gonna replay to get other endings in the morning. I didn't cry but I got very close many times and I am just.... well, I'm watching a vod while I try to process all my emotions. This is a work of art and honestly it was right up my alley. I didn't understand anything after a certain point but by then I had been won over by Noyno and You and Susie's dynamic. Honestly it was just a really, really good mod and it's making me reflect on my own life more. I adore Noyno's character (I read him as a valley girl for the entire game and my friend disagrees with my decision. I disagree with her disagreement because now he's my favorite lmao). I also feel really fascinated by a lot of the themes of imagination and identity and confronting origins. In a weird way, Ribbit reminds me of Alice in Wonderland or the Wizard of Oz. That abstract, nonsensical feeling and the embracing of the fourth wall combined with a lot of the aesthetics and vibes feel very similar in a good way. Maybe some day I'll be able to write a more coherent piece on my opinion of Ribbit, but right now I just have so many thoughts running through my mind. You made something really special here. ...Also, all the music choices were bangers.
