Deltarune- Susie vs Lancer

Susie will automatically attack Lancer, causing Lancer to fight back, until he doesn't. The projectiles he will fire at you will move away from the player's SOUL, just like how Toriel's projectiles moved away from the player's SOUL in Undertale when the player was low on health in that fight.

This sense was cool and yet so sad, Susie almost killed Lancer. The guy who was friends with her, and she believed no one be her friend, and Lancer was hated by many and no on wanted to be his friend. But they became friends, but when he fights Susie he starts to do the same attacks as Toriel. He doesn't want to hurt Susie because she was his only friend.

Everyone goes "I wanted to get Susie killed" or something of that nature, but do realize. Susie got relatable here, the amount of people that have betrayed us in our own lives or did what they thought was right which ended up hurting us. That was us, and at times we lashed out. Maybe not with a literal Ax, but definitely with the metaphorical one. In a way, I could feel both sides of the conflict here, and this scene alone is what made both Susie and Lancer one of the greater characters here. Aside from Prince Fluffy Boi

As a person who's kind of been where Susie has been playing though this was pretty rough. I could understand the pain of betrayal that spurned her to violence, the self loathing that blinded her to the alternatives, and the hidden inner fragility that made it almost too terrifying to stop. Toby did a good job representing this kind of character, to the point that though hard to swallow I played true to Susie's intent during the fight.

Her feet echoed in the chambers of the prison. Where she was going next was uncertain. "Go right!" The words seemed to be echoing too. "Huh..? Kris..? Did you say something back there?" But she couldn't hear the awaited responce. Maybe it was her gut, or just her feet, but Susie decided to go left instead. Dead end. She couldn't help but feel quite lost. Nothing seemed right anymore. What happened to lead to all of this, trapped inside the endless corridors of the prison? Why couldn't she just not gone into that storage closet? It would of driven her made to keep thinking on it, but Susie's thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice. It seemed to be Lancer's, one of her friends she met along her journey to get back home. A ray of hope seemed to be shining through as Susie walked towards it, but was blocked by a puzzle. "Damn, not another one of these..." She pondered going back and asking for assistance. "... and make sure they..." No. Susie had to get to the bottom of this. Determined, she finished the puzzle on her own and, like magic, the door opened. "Understand? They have to stay in their cells." A feel of shock went down Susie's spine, but she remained silent. "The Lightners can't be allowed to escape." Lancer took a deep breath. He seemed to have trouble getting out his words while still sounding strong. "... Especially the purple one." "... Lancer?" Lancer turned around fastly, his heart skipping a beat. "No." He thought. "It can't be. She couldn't of escaped. What if dad finds out? What if he hurts her? What if she hurts him? I can't let that happen, I can't-" Lancer gulped. "S... Susie? ... w-what are you doing here... ?" Susie took a step foward. Her anger and confusion were eating away at her. She hated this feeling, she always has, but there was no way of getting rid of it. Not now, at least. "Lancer, Kris and Ralsei are still locked up..." "I... I know. I... I was the one who told my troops to put you down here. To keep you down here. Forever." Susie took another step foward. Lancer's heart began to race. "L... Lancer... you... you..." Her hands formed fists and began to shake. "You wanted to get rid of us..? I thought we were a team." Susie got a bit choked up. Lancer was one of her only friends, and for him to do this to her? It was like a bullet to the chest. "I... I can explain, Susie." There was no explanation for this. She knew exactly what was happening, or so she thought. Everything she was bottling up was going to come out. Her breathing got faster. This is it. He's done for. "Nah. It's fine." Lancer looked at her with a nervous, confused shock. Was Susie really okay with this? "You don't have to say anything. I... get it. I get it, y'know. Why would anyone... ... really wanna be my friend anyway?" "No! Wait! That isn't true! We ARE friends! Please, just listen to me!" Lancer's head raced with a sentance to put together, but all he could get out was: "Susie, that's not-" But she interrupted. "Shut up." "But-" "SHUT UP!" Susie walked over to Lancer slowly. Every stomp she made got louder and louder. "Get out of my way." No. He wouldn't move. No matter how scared he was, he would stay put. "Did you HEAR ME? GET OUT OF MY WAY." "N... no." This feeling of fear. Lancer was almost used to it. The yelling, the stomping, the loud laughter echoing. he knew this. It reminded him so much of somebody else who was close to him. "Did you not HEAR ME...? Man, I tried to warn you..." Susie got into a fighting stance, her rage blinding her. Everything they did, everything HE said. It was just... a lie. Nothing more. "So, don't expect me to feel guilty..." Her axe slammed onto the ground. "... when they have to clean you off the floor." The fight began. The two readied their attacks. This would be one of their hardest battles. Even so, Susie had a grin on her face. She was tricking herself into thinking this was the only solution, and that she shouldn't feel bad. "Hey, wanna see what happens to traitors?" Susie took a swing of her axe into Lancer's chest. The pain filled his body, he wanted to cry, or scream for help. But all he did was stand still. Now it was his turn to attack. His spaded move flew into the air, with the same ending target. None of them hit Susie. Her grin widened. "They. Get. Crushed." She swung again, doing more damage to her old teammate. Lancer held in any noises of pain he wanted to make. Again, it was his turn. It was the same old attack he'd normally use, although a bit slower. Even then, Susie got hit a few times, but it was almost as if she liked the pain. The battle kept going on. But something seemed off. Lancer's attacks seemed to be avoiding Susie entirely. He knew he didn't want to hurt her. Even if he'd die, he couldn't bring himself to it. Susie's attacks only got stronger and faster. Why couldn't he just fight back?! Why is he making this so easy?! "If you wanna die so much..." Susie raised her axe. "THEN DIE!" This was it. Lancer knew that this would be his end. His fear, his pain, his tears, they were pushed back. All he could feel was that this was what he deserved. His heart pounded. His brain told him to run. But he stayed put. The axe came down with great speed. But, he didn't feel the impact, he didn't feel any blood pouring out. Lancer looked up. "S... Susie? Y... you missed..."

I love this scene Susie has spent her whole life being shunned by others for being a monster (I mean they’re all monsters but you get my point) but she’s only a monster because everyone treats her that way. She isn’t even evil, she’s just a scared kid reacting in the only way that she knows. When Kris catches her eating chalk, she threatens them because SHE feels threatened. She doesn’t actually want to hurt Kris, she just wants them to stay away and if she has to get violent to do it then that’s just what she’s gotta do. The reason she’s so confused when lancer starts praising her scariness is because literally no one has done that before. She expects lancer to leave but he wants to be friends with her instead. Then, shortly after finding somewhere she feels wanted, she ditches the fun gang and joins lancer. It especially doesn’t help that right before she does this, Ralsei is chastising her for attacking K round. Though Ralsei’s criticism is valid, she just sees it as another bully wanting her to either change or leave. Meanwhile lancer likes Susie for who she is and they develop a sorta brother sister relationship. She starts doing tiny acts of selflessness because she really wants lancer to be happy. Then in this scene, she feels betrayed. She’s so angry once she finds out lancer locked her up that all she wants him to do is leave. She still doesn’t want to hurt him but it’s the only way she knows how to get anyone to listen to her. That final attack where she intentionally misses gets me every time. But even though she likes being a little harsh, she isn’t a brute. She hears lancers concerns of her hurting or even killing his father or the possibility of her getting herself killed. Susie even begins to listen in fights just so they can pass the king without getting violent. Susie is such a great character

What makes this so impactful is that not only is she refusing to let you, the player, stop her, and not only is Lancer seemingly prepared to lay down his life to protect his friend, but the damage she deals just keeps going _up_. The longer the fight goes on, the more pissed off she becomes. And the more it increases, the more Lancer is trembling, almost being killed by the one friend he made. But that's where the character breakthrough lies - she overcomes her anger because there's something worth being strong for.

I gotta say, even though this was sad, this was one the best moment I’ve had in a game. Plus, susie starts off as the character that you hate because of what she said when you went to get the chalk, but toby made you care about so much by the time she made friends with lancer, then this happens and you hate her agin then you see the end of the fight. I noticed something about the legend; Kris and Susie's designs match up with their depiction in the legend, but goat boy's doesn't, he's the only member of the team who doesn't match his depiction. Call me skeptical, but that honestly doesn't sit well with me. The Legend's depiction of Goat boy sports a dark cloak and a bright face, goat boy's design is a bright cloak and a dark face (save for when he reveals his face) the depiction does not sport a robe and hat, it's a robe...or cloak, with a hood. A lot of people theorize that Gaster would play a role in Deltarune; what if he is the prince of the legend, maybe in this universe, he isn't in the void. Then it begs the question: why is goat boy there? Perhaps he is a villain sent by the Knight to foil the lightners later on and the real prince has been locked away somewhere? I don't trust goat boy, he starts out (in terms of his chap 1 as a whole) as an absolute goody-two-shoes like a lot of deceptive characters do. I'm calling it now, he's gonna betray the team.

It’s a good theory. Ralsei is an anagram for Asriel so could this be a clue. I mean it could be that across different universes there are just some things that are meant to be. Like Toriel and Asgore breaking up, Sans still being a comedian and Papyrus as his brother, and Undyne still being really ‘aggressive’ . It could be that Asriel/Ralsei was always meant to be a sort of villain.

Lancer being such a fun little guy all of the time really made this scene hit hard. He cares so much about his friends that he is willing to stand in the way and just let himself get hit over and over until he dies, just because he knows his dad will hurt them. Even though it's just text boxes and facial animations, there is such a shift in tone from how he normally is to how he is when he is in emotional pain. It's really nice for Lancer to have more depth to his character rather than just a silly goofy guy all the time. Having it be his own best friend made it even more painful, as well as the title of the song being Vs. Susie, implying that SHE's the bad guy in the fight.
