That encounter really hit me. The music, the messed up speech, the shaking letters, everything. Seeing the messed up attacks and the way it only said it's so cold really did something for me though. This encounter really showed the pain the amalgamates are going through, and it's just a horrible atmosphere.

Fact without the fun: since the amalgamates are injected with determination, and monster bodies can’t handle determination (except undyne I guess,) when you attempt to FIGHT one, it takes 0 damage, and the HP bar is replaced with red text rapidly flashing through words like “No problem here.” Or “Not effective”

In neutral undyne melts after being killed, presumably from her not being able to muster up enough determination to become undying, so she can't handle determination

I'm not sure why Undyne can handle determination, but I'd assume that Alphys might have injected her with a small amount before the genocide fight as I'm pretty sure she mentions Alphys telling her what determination does. Maybe she's capable of wielding it but only when under extreme conditions?? Her body might just be more sturdy than others considering she's a battle hardened warrior in comparison to other boss monsters who are considerably less focused on physicality.

@@laidesman1997 Yeah it might also just be that too. It's really odd for any monster to possess that much determination though. Flowey's kind of an exception bc he was experimented on. Sans is also another strange one, but considering his ties to Gaster he's probably got something going on too. Undyne is kind of a mystery to me because she doesn't seem to have consciousness between timelines like most monsters with determination. It makes me think Alphys might have been tasked with giving her a very miniscule dose of artificial determination as it seems to have a somewhat similar effect, making her body more resilient and the melting effect.

5:15 my favorite this about this game is the music, it can portray so many emotions, it can show happiness, sadness, even emptiness. But this dog amalgamate’s theme has by far physically effected me the most. The first time i played in this area there was just an indescribable fear. The sense of “this isn’t right, this shouldn’t be here” it shook me so much i had to completely turn off the music for this fight. I don’t hear anyone talk about this theme but man if it didn’t leave an effect on me, i still can barely listen to this theme

I had a similar reaction but mine was also informed by my childhood fear of dogs. The descriptions of what the dog was doing alongside the distorted barking all suddenly reminded me of when I was little and ran away from dogs that were bigger than me, who didn’t understand and thought I was trying to play. Endogeny is my favorite amalgamate for being the only one to truly frighten me.

Imagine going into your friend's basement, only to see that she was hiding these things. The encounter at 7:42 actually caught me off guard on my second play through the other day. I forgot which fridge had the amalgamate, so I checked the shaking fridge. When I was wrong, I started to check them all from left to right, and that actually made me jump.

The encounter with Snowdrake's mother is really wholesome because she was the only one of these monsters that was still in the process of losing herself and we actively prevent it. And endogeny is just a silly big boy who is only deadly because they don't realize they would crush everything. On the other side, Lemon Bread is straight up aggressive and just wants you dead(Though I guess it's a bit of a joke on being the relative of a monster who is so passive that she was just hanging out in a random corner). Also for some reason realitybending powers because she merges with the bullet box and actually functions as a real savepoint. And the Memoryheads that seem awfully close conceptually to the Goners...except still being alive, I guess. Reaper Bird is a weird case somewhere in the middle. That monsterfusion seems the most stable in that it really just became a creepy predatory bird...somehow.(The monsters involved aren't even close to that ironically) The most unusual and disturbing thing is the Everyman, which is...what is it, actually? The sprites show it can feel pain, but is immortal and can regrow heads...and shoot them. And due to how shady it seems to be, I wouldn't be surprised if it is active on the dark net in Deltarune.

1:33 One of the Memoryheads say "lorem ipsum docet". That intrigued me. As soon as I saw it, I instantly figured it was Latin. Doing some research, I found two things; 1- "Lorem ipsum docet" can mean "Pain itself teaches" 2- "Lorem ipsum" is a filter text, used by designers and programmers as placeholder text. So it's either that Toby added that "pain itself teaches" to possibly relate to Gaster/just to be creepy, or he made a joke about using words in Latin to seem creepy.

@giorno giovanna Well, the Memoryheads do seem to have links with Gaster. They ask you to come join the FUN, and anyone who knows Gaster knows about FUN values. Their bullets have a very familar appearance to a certain Mysteryman. Using your cell phone on them will pick up strange voices, and anyone who's played Deltarune and used their cell phone in the Dark world will understand what I mean. The Memoryheads have the appearance of a melting skull, and even if Gaster himself isn't a skeleton, he does seem to have strong links with that lazybones, Sans. They are also the only Amalgamates that "Glitch out" and seem to fade away from existence, another trait similar to the Mysteryman and the Gaster Followers.

Here’s a spooky story from way back when I played this game. My old laptop would glitch if the battery ran out and it wouldn’t allow me to log back in immediately after powering it back on. The log in screen would keep telling me my password wasn’t right even though it was. It would also play whatever I was listening to on repeat as I tried to log back in. Well, that happened right at the part where you get cornered by the dog ghost. So I turn my laptop on and it’s just playing that horror sound as the computer keeps telling me my password is wrong. In the moment I forgot about that glitch and I was so creeped out. Eventually it let me back in and I’ve never felt so much relief when the cute puppy faces show up and the dog theme started playing.

i found the true lab terrifying when playing it for the first time today. after what alphys said to undyne when she talked about how she lied, i thought the lab would be a lot more wholesome than this. then i saw the ghost thing in the sink. i was SHOOKETH. the way everything was so unknown and how even the SAVE SPARK was an amalgamate was nerve wracking. but i kept playing. i finally got to snowdrake, and it was just not the same after that. yeah, it looked scary, but that “it’s so cold.” line hit so hard. the music being a super distorted version of snowy (i think??), was as if all she had left were memories. like it was from everywhere at the end of time or something. that was so sad i almost cried. especially considering what she must’ve gone through trapped there. i was so happy when i found out she got to go back to her family in the credits.

To me, the Amalgamate that's the scariest is Endogeny. Not because the fights particularly hard but because unlike all the other Amalgamates, which instantly start battle with you, this one creeps forward toward you, trapping you. You can't get past it and it KNOWS that. I doubt any of them seriously want you harm EXCEPT the dog one, since EVERY dog (with the exception of Annoying Dog) is a part of the Royal Guard, and the Determination experiment happened AFTER the decree to kill every human went out. Edit: hell, it even throws its own versions of Undyne's spear attack at you, this dog wants to kill you.

It was pointed out and is somewhat clear in-game that besides maybe the couple, the dogs don't really seem to get what they're doing. Greater Dog's check description even says it thinks fighting is just a unique form of playing. Lesser Dog is said to not be paying attention, it literally thinks your weapon is a dog treat. Doggo is distrustful of anything moving that he doesn't recognize. They're easily defeated by doing simple things like petting, and their "attacks" are mostly just a representation of a happy dog doing dog things, save for Doggo (whose attack is mainly a method of searching for movement) and the Dogi. Even the Dogi immediately decide your "suspicious smell" isn't that bad upon playing fetch once. The dogs for the most part don't truly possess any malice, they're either completely oblivious or have their own reason to believe you're suspicious. Endogeny doesn't even really seem to be attempting to harm you, given it behaves just like Greater and Lesser Dog (aka, the main dogs who have basically no idea what they're doing and think fighting is just a game). It doesn't have the suspicion of the Dogi or Doggo, it just wants pets and to be played with. I'm willing to chalk Endogeny's actions up to ignorance here, all things considered. Unlike Lemon Bread who very deliberately attacks us (their dialogue has a certain degree of bitterness behind it), Reaper Bird who has so many thoughts occurring they're basically paralyzed and Crystal who is literally falling apart, Endogeny seems to just be...acting like a dog. It just wants some love and affection, after all it's been through.
