I never got to see them before br got rid but I've seen and been lucky enough for my son to cab 9009 at the 40s 60th birthday was hauled by her they pull so strong compared to the likes of the 50 37 and even the leviathan class 40 what an engine the 55 is and what a missed opportunity for BR to not have to sell out to general motors not so long ago we needed them as we had nothing to fill the gap even the 40 has been reinstated which is fantastic to see

Used to work them every day 1967-70. My Driver allowed me to do half the driving every day. One day he let me take the Flying Scotsman all the way. Arrived on the KEB 25 minutes early. Signalman let us in with 5 minutes to go. We used 2 engines.

Same here. I started as a Traction Trainee at Haymarket MPD in 1974 and my first drive in a Deltic was 1A57 Aberdeen to Kings Cross. We worked them from Edinburgh Waverley to Newcastle. We'd be on 'The Coast' (ECML) or as we called it, 'The Holy Ghost' for a week at a time. I can still hear that howl/wail as it was opened up in the Waverley. No one in the station was in any doubt a Deltic was pulling out. Nothing else sounds like that. There were always at least two, or three in the depot at one time. I never imagined that almost half a century later people would still be interested.

The colour purple is in fact magenta wich they bought from Triumph (BL) in the late seventies.

I was joking, mate. The colour in it self is not bad, I ‘ve seen classic Triumphs in this colour and they looked great. But, yes for an iconic loco it should have been British Racing Green.

I don't believ 60 percent is diesel. I suspect 60% is for miles of non-electrified track vs electric, but for passengers carried, per day, including the London tube, electric must be higher than this.

conantdog Oh it was very simple you paid £20 you got 2 drives and a certificate so me and my mate seen driving jumped on it they used to do this quite regularly i drove the Hymek Warship D335 and Deltic D9019.

WHAT ON EARTH is with that colour? This used to come into Wimbledon depot to have the wheels skimmed now and then, was owned by Porterbrook. I guess that puke purple is their corporate colour???
