Can ONLY imagine what these superb versatile loco's must have sounded like on the heavily loaded ( 13 Mk1 coaches ) from Paddington to Hereford / Worcester trains. I was very lucky enough to be introduced to Hymeks at Chinnor ( now C.P.R.R PS ) in the early 1970's that AWESOME Maybach heartbeat sound never EVER goes from the memory. Thank you for posting this wonderful video

I got lucky that day to get right behind this wondrous beast. I too had the pleasure of the hymek in the 70s,particularly remember one departing Evesham station fully loaded. My best memories of hydraulics ,as a boy at Dawlish along the seawall, although the Hymek wasn’t a frequent visitor.

Just that section alone would have been worth the cost of a day rover! As a young man I loved the Hymek sound, and still do. I had many runs behind them; a particular favourite place for thrash being in Southampton tunnel with the southbound 'Birmingham' as the loco accelerated away from the 15mph Northam Curve. Through a brick cutting and then the tunnel, before shutting off for the station stop at Central. This superb clip brought back a happy memory of those days.

mekydro I was lucky that day to get behind and record this fantastic sound. I’m so glad it brought back great memories. I look forward to catching the visiting warship this year and hopefully the same results, managing to get right behind it ! Cheers,Andy

People in the Western USA were also treated to this soundtrack with the Krauss Maffei ML4000 which has 2 of those Maybach engines. One survives today but only 1 of its 2 engines runs because the other's corroded.

Kinda neat, at the beginning, it almost sounds like an old EMD. Such as a GP9 or something like that. But as she revs up, her Maybach song becomes clear. I'm personally not a fan of the look of the Hymeks, but they sound pretty darn good!

TrainTrackTrav it's very interesting to hear your comparisons . I have to admit that the Hymek is my least favourite for looks out of all the hydraulics, but the sound has it's own quality, and it's pure maybach at the end of the day. Thanks for watching & commenting Andy

When you are going out of the tunnel the worst part is the tree branch which I have to be careful when ever I’m window hanging on the right
