As a 5-6 year old in the early 1950’s we used to have many trips to Stafford Station where my grandfather was a signalman, my aunt worked at English Electric’s drawing office and I remember that there was a scent of excitement but nobody told me why. We went as usual to watch the second half of the “Midday Scot” come thundering through. We stood on the platform looking towards Baswitch, where my great uncle was also a signalman, to see the first signs of steam and smoke of the engine. All the signals were set but no sign of a steam locomotive, all of a sudden out of nowhere, a blue engine pulling the familiar coaches roared past, perhaps more of a rumble! Jumping up and down with excitement I asked my dad and his sister “what was that”, they both replied “ An English Electric Deltic” That evening under the gaslighting at grandads house on Russell Street the full story of their knowing what was to come that afternoon. I still have those memories made vivid by your video, thank you.

Brings back memories of watching the blue prototype on main line test while train spotting at Litchfield Trent valley, round mid day heading for Scotland. Bescot back in the 50's was our local spot for train spotting and sneeking into the engine sheds.

Amazing engines, reminds me of my days watching the WR trains thundering through Ealing and Hanwell to and from the West Country in the 60’s and early 70’s……the ground literally shook when one of the ‘Western’ locos roared past a full tilt……

Glorious. If only these came back to daily commute. Forgot just how quiet they are when hauling. Wish I followed my dream to drive Trains, but life set me on the rails of being a touring musician. Spending hours a day when in UK or 2 weeks, yes a whole fortnight travelling from Moscow to Mongolia! The glory days of Steam would've been my favourite. I've never been a Trainspotter. But, my family are all military, Grandad retired a Colonel, became an engineer and a "shunter" then moved on to Heathrow Airport to design Heathrow Express amongst other things. My Dad was a Heavy Gun Fitter, basically building Tank turret guns and servicing the 25ib guns used by King's Troop RHA. Mum was a Experimental Assistant in Gunnary out of MOD Shoeburyness. Had its own branch rail terminal. So I love dearly the engineering that go into these mighty machines. The engineers who keep her on the rails, in top form and in this Deltic looking stunning in her livery and large illuminated number display too. Excellent indeed

it did not sound all that much like a Deltic ...but was not pulling 20 thousand tonnes of freight like they usually do....
@UKHeritageRailways
@UKHeritageRailways Жыл бұрын
I think you may be a bit confused with another locomotive class. Deltics were never freight locomotives, being built for the East Coast Main Line express passenger services to Edinburgh. No single locomotive would shift 20,000 tonnes. An eleven coach train is around 539 tonnes. As to sound, that's exactly what a Napier Deltic engine should sound like.

@@neiljervisss100 Thanks. Can always tell when these loco's are only running on one engine! I recall being in Oban, summer 1981 (?) when Argyll and Sutherland Highlander brought a Sunday special in from Edinburgh with a MKIII rake set of push pull stock. Leaving Oban the loco was only running on one engine, struggled half way out of Oban ( 1 in 50 ish) and then I heard the second engine burst into life and accelerate the train. I took a photo of that train leaving Oban, clearly showing one engine only running.
