Remember seeing this on the news as if it was yesterday. Was 9 at the time, my first Deltic was 008 at Manchester Victoria, few months later Dad took me to York for the day- we needed to cop three Deltics to complete- 007, 015 and 004. All three came in one after the other. Never saw 001 or 020 as they'd gone by the time I was spotting, but managed to cab 019 at Edinburgh and get haulage from 013 and 002 on a farewell Special. Bloody fantastic childhood memories.

Possibly more than 3 or 4 miles I grew up beside Chester-le-St station (ECML) and as a kid I used to lie in bed at the dead of night listening to Deltics coming from Durham or Newcastle. Seemed like you could hear them for ages before they powered through. Again as a kid standing on the station bridge you could hear them coming and our excitement built up until they rounded the southern bend or hurtled over the viaduct from the north. Happy, simple and carefree memories. Thanks for posting

Eastern spotter alfie well, all six of the Deltics that were preserved have seen mainline service over the years since they were withdrawn, and although some of these are currently being repaired/overhauled, it's likely all of them will return to the network at some point in the future (although a railtour would be your best bet to see one in action.) I was born in '77 - so I didn't see one in active service prior to withdrawal - however I was fortunate enough to inadvertently witness 55022 powering through a suburban station in my home city during a period between 2013-15, when it was hired out to GBRf for the purpose of stock movements around Glasgow (it had also been used briefly by the company for freight workings two years prior to this.) You'll see one yet! 👍

@bwhugul The deltics were not replaced because they were worn out,. It was because they were a non-standard design with their 2-stroke opposed piston engines.. the HST was faster and of a more conventional design, and could go for longer periods before reconditioning became necessary so made the deltic pretty much reduntant, particularly as rail passenger numbers had been in free fall since the '50s. at least one group is planning to preserve a valenta equipped HST set

That the idling speed of the Napier engines in the Deltics (750rpm) is the same as the full power speed of the Sulzer engine in the Class 47...and that they could be heard for three or four miles on full power...and that they often smoked like steam engines...and that they could do 110mph effortlessly...all this made them special as well.
@SvenTviking

Apparently in the last year of operation, BR told the drivers to give the Deltics their head to see how fast they could go on tracks cleared for the HST125. They found they could pull similar speeds as the HST.

I think the HSTs definitely will. They're too important to go unnoticed. Plus they have had a much more demanding and varied life than the Deltics ever had. And I think they are much better-known. For one thing. how many large British fleets have had their engines replaced to run for another 10-15 years? The Deltics only lasted 20, yet the HSTs went on with Valentas for 32 years and have another 10 years left with new engines.

@florianska6 Well... it depends on how much power you want from the traction motors! ;-) A generator powering motors is about 80% efficient, so 3300 engine hp provides about 2600 hp "at the rail". At low speeds, the tractive effort (pulling force) is limited by other things, such as the design of the traction motors and the weight of the loco. At higher speeds, the loco can run at constant power, so tractive effort decreases as the speed increases.

But I guess they could have 18 since 6 will go into 18. But the rows look to big to have only 18. Baby Deltics have I believe 9 cylinders, and 9+9=18... so which is it? Sorry for the long comment. :)

I believe per engine it's 3 cylinders per delta by 6 rows giving 18 cylinders per engine, but since two pistons share a cylinder, it would be 36 pistons per engine. Such a brilliant concept, putting two pistons back-to-back in a compression-ignition engine (all credit to Junkers for coming up with the idea, though Napier made it practical).

Suzan Gibson I'll start at the beginning concerning the deltic engine they are two stroke diesel for a start two engines per loco each engine has 9 cilinders and 18 pistons which are opposed pistons i.e two pistons a cilinder look on u tube the deltic engine diagram

@@thromboid no it's 18 pistons per engine and 9 cilinders per engine plus they are two stroke opposed pistons the other engine is the same so with two engines it's 18 cilinders and 36 pistons you will find I'm correct

@@noeldunford4955 and ill start with the facts concerning the deltic engine, no theyre litteraly both correct, the deltic engines used in the class 55 were 6 rows of 6 pistons layed out in delta formation with 2 pistons per cylinder, resulting in 18 cylinders and 36 pistons per engine. nobody will find that your correct because youre not
