A cracking fix, nice that it was the speaker and not too involved a repair. I laughed out loud for quite a while when you picked up the terminal screwdriver instead of the probe at around 4.50 to test the speaker wire. All good fun and it certainly made this video my most memorable and favourite one so far, even topping the andrex wind sock from the dyson fan video. Thanks for making this an entertaining video by keeping it in (and educational too) 👍😊

Thanks 🙂I remember fixing it but can't remember all the details. I had a goal of trying to get 100 videos out in the first year so people would have something to watch. So I was trying to do two a week. At the moment I'm trying to do 1 a week as it was getting a bit too much, but I'm finding even 1 a week takes a considerable amount of time and effort!
@thetraindriver0111 ай бұрын
That was an ambitious goal and a good one for us but a bit of a time vacuum for you. You have made some great videos so far, don't get put off, it looks as if your channel is gaining viewership as the figures are going up all the time, the key for us is regular content, be it once a day or week. It's like a tv show, you look forward to the next one and if it does not come along in it's regular slot, people move on. But, if they know it should be out once a week for example, then they will keep coming back 👌😊@BuyitFixit @@BuyitFixit

I would ship & pay you to fix mine. It was my favorite Christmas gift from my Mom who recently passed and I’m really missing her. I have tapes of the two of us playing around with the Talkboy from 30 years ago that I’d love to be able to listen to again on the Talkboy. All I can hear are crackles, but the heads spin and seem to work.

Incase anyone is wondering the speaker from Hallmark card that plays music is the same olms and wattage/dimensions. I used an old one hanging around. Remember + is red.

I had one of these bad boys too when i was a kid. I took it literally everywhere. But i really hated that the headphone jack was basically useless as it was mono and not even 2 channel mono but one side of your headphones had audio, the other side was silent. So it was really terrible as a playback device for music. Batteries lasted surprisingly long in this thing, when you used alkalines.

I had two of these and one got taken apart and the other got stolen. Wish I could find one of these again. The recorded sound being weak seems to be more than on mine. These were made for dictation and not background sounds but a long time ago when I had mine at my cousins house and I had an old tape and I let them all record what they wanted on it it sounded pretty good. Still have the tape and have digitized it. I hated the mono headphone jack too.

I've seen quite a few on ebay. I got a talk girl too, but I've not got round to looking at that one.

I’ve got one of these for some reason all works apart from the fact it doesn’t record new messages.
@BuyitFixit25 күн бұрын
Strange. From what I remember theres a sliding switch inside with multiple contacts which switches it from playback to recording. Perhaps there are dirty contacts, or does it just record silence? If so could be the microphone or a broken wire to the microphone.

I've just subscribed to your channel via my Mate Vince channel who recommended you and I really enjoyed your videos. Could I be nosy and ask what overhead camera are you using as it's very clear and as good, colour.

Thank you for the video! I have the older 92 model and I don't have the screw where cassette goes. Do you you have any idea on how to open the older model?
@BuyitFixit11 ай бұрын
Sorry unfortunately not. I didn't see this screw until I opened the cassette deck. I'd just have a look around where it's not separating hopefully you'll narrow it down.

Fantastic !! Can Apple Cider Vinegar be used for the corrosion problem??
@BuyitFixit11 ай бұрын
I would have thought so, it's still acidic so it will neutralise any alkaline residue that is left. After its stopped fizzing I'd wash it off with some isopropyl alcohol. Hope that helps 👍

Mine works sounds fine playing a tape, but recording and playing the playback is weak. Bad mic? Replace speaker anyways? Just clean up contacts?
@BuyitFixit8 ай бұрын
Do you have access to another cassette player or a pre recorded cassette? You could then narrow it down to the speaker or microphone perhaps.
@jeremyjensen7427 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for this video. I've been attempting to repair a talkboy for my nephew, using two donor talkboys. Interestingly, they both have a different PCB so it's not a 1:1 match. The board I'm keeping is identical to the one in your video. I was able to get things working super good with a new speaker installed, also had to solder on a donor cassette speed controller (whatever that part is called). The one thing I can't quite figure out is getting audio recording to work. I've tried soldering on a new mic, no luck. When I hit record, it will "erase" or record over the old tape recordings, but it will not add any of the sounds going into the mic. Any guess what could be happening or how I could potentially resolve it?
@BuyitFixit Жыл бұрын
From what I remember when I looked at this one it is based around an IC that had an example schematic of how the circuit works. There is a switch with quite a few contacts to swap from recording to playback. If it was me I would probably use my scope set it recording and follow the signal to see where it goes and stops. If you don't have a scope you could possibly trace it by probing with a small amplifier to see where the sound goes?

Could another repair place fix mine? The door where you put the cassette in is broken because the plastic piece on the inside is missing. I assume you could just replace it, right?
@BuyitFixit Жыл бұрын
You might be able to perhaps make a piece of plastic similar and glue it on? Alternatively you might be able to pick up a broken unit from eBay, and use the cassette door from that machine to repair yours.
