I like Jon's guidance here on taking into account player background/attributes to inform what the PC would know or not know.

Great discussion as always. the AV club and Jon are so good at not only being good DnD players but also explaining why they do the things they do. Thanks Gents!

David's musings are always great! There's so much to take away from these detoxes to apply to our own games. It's a masterclass, truly.

There is a lovely supplement book on Lulu called "petty gods" and there are so many great gods within to spice up a setting. There is a god of frayed ropes, who will maintain ropes and aid in knots and untangling, but will fray, loose or unexpectedly tie ropes, string or laces of those who draw his ire. All this rope talk reminded me of it. Also, David ranting about traveler might make for a fun members video

Something i thought about while listening to the actual episode: with all those people who died int corridor, you’d think the last person who died would’ve picked up all the magic items, lol. Could you imagine the horror of being stuck in that place and going through all the corpses looking, searching for something, anything to save yourself. Yeesh.

While the "drain" ability of undead in old school d&d is absolutely terrifying. Don't forget undead have a morale of 12. They never fail morale checks. They never run.

This is the truly terrifying stat for undead, and what makes clerics so essential to the party.

It's always interesting to wonder what might have happened if either Mike or Matt were here, for a Cleric would probably change the plans completely haha either way, it was a real nice session guys, love the delving EPs!

That was some good insight on how players coming solely from modern systems might need a bit more coaching from the ref, especially if they're only used to environmental cues being (character sheet) skill prompts. That could be a great topic for a video all on its own.

TIL Egyptians trapped their tombs. Oof. I'm always working on improving my telegraphing; or always thinking about it. Half the reason I enjoy the 3d6 content is learning what I can from how Jon ref's the games. I appreciate hearing y'all talk about these aspects of the game. I assume this is similar for others, but it feels very satisfying when players apply knowledge you have telegraphed in a prior area to current situation; regardless if you had to go hard with "guys, it's t w e n t y corpses in the courtyard, are you sure that's what you want to do"? Lastly, I'm always here for Soulsborne talk. Those games are masterful at environmental storytelling, and piecing together story/lore with only fragments of information.

The reason players don't want to investigate Ted's unique item, is because Ted has told them about said item. They naturally assume their hand will melt off the moment they touch it. This is my experience, at least. Always fighting against the idea of adversarial refs 😶

@@kylegraywolf Haha, normally you would be right about this! I have certainly been guilty of some gotchas and similar, but in this case I really just mentioned a small, mundane item in the room description that I thought for sure would attract their attention. Alas. It isn't even deadly!

@@warduke42 happens to the best of us, or unluckiest of us 🧐 I may have faced that as well, but they always have an air of fear about them, and seem to look at everything like a trap 🤷‍♂️ The paranoia is enjoyable to watch at least. Still working on how to move things along, akin to Jon’s comments here.

I love all 3d6 Down The Line videos, even when the video is wonky! Thanks for the heads up on the video. When watching the delve, I thought my tv was going out or breaking. I started panicking. Opening new tabs to check other videos, opening files to make sure I had no issues, etc. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't panicking about losing my tv, I was panicking that I would not be able to watch my show. The one show I consider must watch tv. I was thinking, do I have enough in the bank to run down to Walmart to get a new tv to use as my monitor? This one is 21 years old. I didn't post this in the actual episode because I was panicking but able to keep watching. Now that I had a night of rest, I realize that could have ruined my week. Don't scare me like that Jon! I know you have patrons so spend the money to upgrade your video system or whatever, just get it working please and thank you. In case you have not realized, I am joking about the patron money and upgrade thing however, I am totally serious about Don't scare me like that! Keep up the great work. I just got to thinking, do you guys switch off dm'ing? If not, do the players have any streams/live plays they dm/play in besides this one? Then you have Ted talking when he designs adventures, and how players treat set dressing as a deadly clue. Ted, are you just describing how you guys play 3d6 Down The Line or do you not realize you guys do the same? I agree with David about telling the players, "Those are just painted stars on the wall". As an example when I was teaching my sister-in-law how to play I helped her out. She is playing a fighter with the background of soldier. The group ran into (I don't recall the monster) flying enemies. She looks on her character sheet and says, "I only have melee weapons". I tell her, "Due to your background as a soldier you know having a ranged option is mandatory, even if you prefer melee combat. What type of ranged weapon would you have?" She says, "I could use a spear to throw or for melee right". Yes, so write it on your character sheet, look up the range stats and cost. I'll come back to you later in the round. In my mind, a soldier would know, sometimes I don't want to be in melee, or sometimes enemies won't come into melee. Therefor I need a ranged option. I think Jon said, "You missed 21 secret doors, just on this level". That will bring the game to a crawl, no pun intended.
