Oh how many years have passed since i've been a miller here the wheels turn the years pass i'm growing old and grey. There are days i want to remember if i had a little happiness? the wheels turn the years pass i don't get any answers. I heard it said they want to drive me out away from my village and away from the mill the wheels turn the years pass without an end, without a goal. Where will i live? who will care for me? i'm already old, i'm already tired the wheels turn the years pass and with them, also go the jews. (or more poetically, as the mloteks translated: and soon no trace of the jews will remain)

I'm here kinda late but it was my husband's choice of listening to his Jewish roots and to what he listented to and above that all of his folk dances of balkan, polish, serbian,, jewish, etc. that careened into me this . He was 98 Jewish Bronx born when he passed away and I love this movie as an homage to him.

I thought I was the only one who noticed this. I have a recording of Der Erlkönig that gives me a similar feeling but it just could be the whole ambience. In any event yes I too have come here from watching the marvelous film A Serious Man. I'd never heard this style of song I can understand some because I'm half German so that helps but it does conjure emotions just in tone and delivery, love discovering new things as a musician.

Sidor Belarsky - was a fantastic opera singer. He performed in "The Pioneers of Israel" an opera written by Jacob Weinberg in February, 1946 at Carnegie Hall. This opera won an international prize in 1924. Check out Jacob Weinberg on Wikipedia and on KZbin. His music is s till being performed.

@alinstoi Alright, no problem :-D Watching the Movie "A Serious Man", i was already able to understand the part "Die Räder drehn sich, die Jahre gehn sich, Ich bin schon alt und Greis und Grau" (The Wheels keep turning, the years go by, I'm already old and aged and grey), but had problems with the rest. But I found the use of subtitles in the movie's prologue rather silly in the german version, bedause one could understand them rather well as jidisch is similar to german.

This song gives me so much pain and sadness, especially when thinking that Jewish/Yiddish culture did indeed eclipse in most of Eastern Europe due to the murderous persecution of the Nazis and other antisemites. In the Ukraine, for example, there are a lot of abandoned synagogues that tell of its rich history. I feel such a deep connection to Yiddish culture even though I am a German-speaking Swiss and I would like to learn more about it.

I remember when my husband and I first watched this, my gay husband, 38 years my senior and 16 years as my husband, as a 95 year Bronx born Yiddish speaking Jewish guy, said at the end of the song "oh my god, this is so sad" . Yiddish it's "golem" like the Led Zeppilin song, not Shalomme . But languages change.

Hi, could not tell the wording of the song just by hearing, but after you found a part of it as: "ikh bin shoyn alt un grays un gro", I can tell that in German "alt" = old, "grays" ="old aged" [germ: 'Greis', no real one-word-equivalent in English], "gro" = greyhared.

Yet one can get by in German if one knows Yiddish and vice versa. I was able to manage in Germany as a Yiddish speaker.
@renedupont19533 жыл бұрын
@@miriamoxenhandlernewman4360 Your remark is ridiculous and has nothing to do with reality. A Yiddish speaker cannot understand fluent spoken German; he just picks up isolated words. A German-speaker cannot understand authentic Yiddish for many reasons: Hebrew-Aramaic and Slavic components; unique Yiddish syntax; Yiddish phraseology is light years away from German expressions, etc. What do you mean you were able to manage and get by? Your communication was on the 'me wanna go chop-chop' level. Your so-called Yiddish probably isn't worth much either. As a professor of Yiddish, which is my mother tongue, I would gladly give you a test. You couldn't even say 'what time is it?' in German. Yiddish: Vifl halt der zeyger? Or: 'I had a dream'. Yiddish: S'hot zekh mir gikholemt a kholem. What do these examples have to do with German? Nothing.
