The scenes where they were violent towards each other shook me to my core. Nowhere in cinema have I ever seen such a raw, visceral and literal portrayal of self hatred. Watching this film after decades of struggling with body dysmorphia and a deficit in self compassion, those scenes felt so sobering. The violence towards your own body, the anger at the displays of human existence within the self, the sorrow and regret when faced with the irreversible damage you have done to your body in pursuit of a standard you were never meant to achieve - it was a heartbreaking prompt to question the value we put on our image both personally and as a society. I expected this film to tiptoe on the line between powerful imagery and triggering imagery but it completely went beyond my expectations. After watching many films about self image, I always felt these films couldn’t be done without feeding into/inspiring self destruction. The Substance only made me think of self compassion and how often it’s actually practiced/encouraged in life. It made me feel so much compassion for myself after violently hating and hurting myself in the pursuit of “beauty”. This film definitely didn’t heal me but it completely reinforced all the reasons why I want to.

One of the greatest body-horrors ever made. Especially by someone whose last name isn't Cronenberg. Coralie Fargeat has placed herself firmly on equal footing with both Cronenbergs: Elder, _and_ Younger. I don't think I need to say that this isn't an easy task, and it's one many other directors have attempted (with varying success) but she actually did it! A lot of directors, who attempt Cronenbergian body horror, fail to realize that what makes this sort of film work isn't the gross-out, or the gore, but the human element. _The Fly_ worked because it wasn't about a guy turning into a fly, but about a couple dealing with a terminal illness that will make its victim violent before it eventually kills him. _The Substance_ gets right at the heart of several deeply human themes, not the least of which are ageing, self-image, the cruelty of showbusiness, and loving who you are. And it does this while neither coming off as preachy NOR diluting its message in the slightest. Quite the opposite: the horror doesn't work without the message. Not an easy task for anyone to accomplish.

@GaryIVКүн бұрын
I think it's important to say that the film also touches on themes of losing what you are by chasing what you're not. In a direct sense that a greedy youth will lead to a bitter aging, and the metaphorical sense that being anyone but yourself steals a part of yourself that can't be returned. It will make you an enemy of yourself, despite that fact that you are one.

The point of the movie is that whether she is a “bombshell” to you, or anyone, or no one at all - she is still ENOUGH. She has a life to be grateful for and there is no “perfect version of yourself.” This is reality, which means perfect doesn’t exist. And we shouldn’t throw away all we have to meet some non-existent external standard, or trying to be a version of ourselves that we once were. I am sorry to say that, I am not a hater, just don't understand how one can say "accept yourself as you are" while having so many procedures and not even mentioning it. It would feel more honest if we could have this real conversation. "We should accept ourselves, but that's so hard! Etc etc"
@cbeautifulworld1120 сағат бұрын
Thank you!! For someone who spent thousands upon thousands of dollars years ago on full body surgical procedures to appear younger and has had more recent enhancements (e.g. lip fillers) it is not only insulting to our intelligence that she promotes acceptance of ourselves as we are, it is ludicrously hypocritical. The feeling tone and message would be different if she included the context of her personal experience with many surgeries. Without that, it's deceptive. In her position, I would be extremely embarrassed to give these interviews as if she hadn't had massive cosmetic work done.

One of the key takeaways from the movie is the importance of accepting yourself as you are, without waiting for others' approval or love. The expectations we place on ourselves, often influenced by what others want us to be, can prevent us from seeing how amazing we truly are. Even actresses, who are often admired for their beauty, have their own flaws and challenges. The message I got from the film is that self-love and self-acceptance are far more important than seeking validation from others. Instead of waiting for someone else to love you, it's crucial to first love and appreciate yourself.

I can't believe Demi Moore is 61 years old.

To me Demi is aging so well. Despite the beauty, I'm always touched by woman who embraces aging with confidence and charm. We cant scape that anyway right? Your souls remains young.

What's sad is that Demi has clearly succumbed to the demand for youthful beauty

Thats why she was part of this movie. It is a subject that is close to her and she clearly has had experience with it. Maybe now she is trying to accept herself more regardless of what is expected of her?

Completamente!!!

It was a very thought provoking movie, especially for women. As I was watching it, obviously I don't know how female celebrities feel, but I kept wondering why she would do this and that. From the very beginning already, why did she just leave her body on the floor? And later on, she made a room to hide her. It's from there that I thought of how differently I would have acted towards my "other" self. I immediately thought that I would lay my body on a comfy bed, and at the end of each week I would write to myself with positive affirmations. It's an interesting perspective and definitely lets you question yourself.

Lol 😂😂😂😂 Lets Be REAL...Demi Moore has had ALOT of Plastic surgery on her Body and Face for the past 20 plus yrs. Now after her last face life shes telling US to accept ourselves the way we are? GIVE ME A BREAK
@kaylahevans8334Ай бұрын
Maybe because she's speaking as someone with experience in not accepting herself. Nobody is perfect 100% of the time, and having previous work done doesn't mean she doesn't have a different perspective now. You should see the movie if you haven't already.
@chaoswitch1974Ай бұрын
Just the last 6 I. I don't know if she had anything before around 55. It's kind of insulting to 50 year olds to have a 61 year old pay one. Maybe if they had an actual 50 year old play her, it would have thrown it into the face of Hollywood that women age out at 50. There are many beautiful 50 year old women in Hollywood - Angelina Jolie, for one.

Plastic surgeries are also to improve or enhance some part of your body. Not necessarily because you hate your body, it means improving but without taking it to excess

This movie leaves lasting impressions in your mind that can be so abrasive and absurdly intrusive but at the same time curiosity invoking! It's like that thing you don't ever want to see, but can't look away! If you're very visually sensitive I won't recommend this movie. BUT if you're intrigued by topics of gross beauty standards then go for it!
