Those Bamner Gibsons from the ‘42-‘45 are my favourite guitars in the world.

Band that opened for us the other day was very folk, blues, bluegrass ish. Singer and rhythm guy was playing a first year banner j-45. I think he said 42. Red spruce and old mahogany built by someone who was probably fixing to go live in the mud fighting for humanity. He had an internal mic with a sound hole cover straight in through the board. By far the best all around live acoustic sound I’ve ever heard. He was also one of those guys that plays a two hour set with one guitar and for some reason never has to tune it. To top it off he played cords unconventionally and they sounded heavily like I had heard music for the first time. Those are the guys that drive me crazy.

I hear you lol. Buying a guitar can be a complicated process sometimes; it pays to listen to a lot of instruments and decide what you like. It is also good to kind of watch the market and make sure you are not going to lose money if you decide you don’t like it later lol. I have been on both sides, losing money, making money and breaking even lol. God bless you my friend.

That thin Honduran mahogany top accentuates the treble a bit more giving it a punch similar to a Early Martin D-18. The Great Norman Blake’ plays both Gibson and Martins- that tells ya all ya need to know 🇺🇸

I sure appreciate your kindness a bunch! It is sad to hear about your friend, we sure have lost a bunch of good bluegrass pickers over the last few years it seems. I live in South Texas now, but I am originally from Harlan County Kentucky.

How does this compare in sound to a 50s D28 in real life? It sounds fantastic on video.
@ShawnBrockMusic
@ShawnBrockMusic 2 жыл бұрын
I would say it is more open sounding, and has more bass than the average 50s D-28. It has a really big sound with a big bottom end.

Hello Shawn. Would you say this gibson is brighter than Randy's 44 D-18? If you could, how would you sum up the difference of tone between the two guitars? Thanks for these awesome demos!
@ShawnBrockMusic
@ShawnBrockMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Kevin, I would say the Gibson is a little brighter, and it would probably be most noticeable in the trebles. I would also say the Gibson is more of an open kind of sound, while the D-18 had more punch, and a quick responce. Both are extraordinary guitars, and different enough to justify owning both of them LOL. I appreciate you watching the videos man!

Bob, I agree 100%! I understand the custom shop at Gibson is doing some wonderful things these days, but there’s no doubt there have been some hits and misses over the ages LOL.

Man it probably sounds like something else, but it is a version of an old folk song called cuckoo bird. 😀

I don't know why, but I've heard several Gibsons from the 30's and 40's that were good flatpicking guitars, but from the 50's and on they sound too thin to my ear. They're good for all kinds of other stuff though. What's the name of the song you play at 18:40?

Oddly enough, at 18:40, I somehow got going on The Battle of 1814, or the Battle of New Orleans, depending on who you ask about the appropriate title. 😂🤣 that was completely unintentional, though I wish I had been a few seconds earlier with my impulse. Nevertheless, gosh, Man this is really a nice instrument, and a pleasure to play. Very powerful!

I know it is all in the hands of the player Not condemning the gibsonian but nothing beats a full blown square shoulder dreadnought fo blue grass playing. I would like and trust gibsons if they all sound like this.
