Your understanding of weight distribution is very good. Your 2017 work shows alot of that. You got a lot better with your inbetweens too. Noticing that you want your poses to be more realistic, I believe their good in respects to that limitation. The things that seem lacking are your povs and range of emotion. Your scenes are very play-like where the audience always seems to stay in one spot during the shot. Stretch out of that comfort zone and play with it a little to make your story telling more dynamic. As for your emotions, your keyed emotions are very good but lack a wide range of expressions. For example, instead from neutral to happy, throw some relative expressions inbetween. Perhaps neutral, to contemplative, to content, THEN happy. If that makes sense. People behave this was unknowingly. So it's a lot more natural.

You probably got rejected because your skill level is far beyond CSSSA applicants. You don't need CSSSA. CSSSA's animation department is for students who need that extra kick, who have enough potential to be really good parts of the animation world, but need that boost before they can truly be good enough for it. You are past that point. It has nothing to do with digital assignments or how hard you worked.

Another reason is because in the application requirements, it says the work should all be recent, whereas this is over a year.

Yeah, I went on a tour at CALARTS in 2007. They actually accept people based on your life drawings and when I asked them what they were looking for for animation, they said 2 things: NO ANIME WHATSOEVER, and HAVE GOOD life Drawings. So, looks like this was 2017, 10 years later and maybe they still have those rules. I also saw the portfolios of those whom got accepted and it was ONLY life drawings. I definitely think if you like anime & manga you should stick with it, but they do teach, and preach, prejudiced ideologies in art schools that are anti anime, manga, and comics. Those things sell also. If you haven't gone on the tour, you should. And, talk to whomever is in charge, and build a rapport that way.

@@nanusantos1696 They don't have a problem with anime style itself. It's just that students who ONLY draw anime style have little to no knowledge of the fundamentals of art or realistic drawing. Even in animation, you gotta know the basics instead of just drawing in a cartoon style, and people with an anime style always have whack proportions and make other errors since they're so used to drawing in that "style". Calarts and other animation schools aren't looking for people already grounded in a style, they want to see how dynamic your skills are and how versatile you can be.
@RS-ep2ry6 жыл бұрын
@@nine-vi7rw Not true at all. If your anime art looks good it´s because you have locked down your fundamentals, same goes with cartoony art. Even so, they accept a lot of people with REALLY cartoony art all the time, so I don´t see your point.
@nine-vi7rw6 жыл бұрын
@@RS-ep2ry If you have "locked down" your fundamentals, then you gotta show both. And let's be real, most anime style people submitting to these schools don't really have a good anime style, and that shows a serious lack of knowledge. Their art style is then the least dynamic. Cartoony style is still more flexible, but even then you gotta show anatomy studies, life drawings and so on, which a lot of anime students drop.

I went to CSSSA 2017 and apparently since so many people sign up they end up having to cap off the submission and dont look at applications anymore, it's really just a chance of luck when it comes to the animation which really sucks cause this looks amazing! It just takes sometimes to apply multiple times :/
@iclaimthisname97674 жыл бұрын
So you can spend years on your application and they won't even bother to really look at it? That's messed up. They should just only let a certain amount of people apply instead of rejecting people without really looking at their work.

Okay, now seriously: the first animations may be "simpler" (as in lex complex, for instance the people walking in the school like place with angel wings are a bit static...) but as you advance in the video it gets more complex: the cooking one is fluid and the colors are beautiful. But When I arrived at the staff fight I wasn't expecting this. The movements are really good, even in the calm moments when the girl is smiling she's not static, plus very good expressions! What I see is the progress you make. One of my teachers (not in drawing but it's he same) once told me : I do not evaluate the abilities, I evaluate the progress. Dude! The progress in this video is qui te impressive! *clap calp* 👏🏻

Probably got rejected for anime-esqe style. Art institutions don't like anime because it isn't going to help you grasp concepts of how real life behaves, like with light and proportions. You've gotta be able to draw from life to train your eye to pick up key details and get proportions correct. Most anime is idealistic and you copy proportions of somebody else, instead of developing your own unique style (in the words of my art professor). She told me that once you master how to draw from life, you can break the rules and apply what you learned into developing your own style. Anime isn't bad, its just not what most art institutions are looking to see.
