As Democrats discuss whether President Joe Biden should stand down as the 2024 Democratic presidential candidate following his disastrous debate performance, we speak with James Zogby, senior member of the Democratic National Committee, about his call for an open and transparent nomination process to select new candidates leading up to the Democratic National Convention next month, where the final nominee would be voted on. “I want to see a unified, energized party with a lot of excitement because they were part of a historic process of change,” says Zogby, who is president of the Arab American Institute.

We just don't have the organizational infrastructure for the DNC to hold a new election in time, nor the public awareness even if we did. Party elites choosing is the only feasible alternative, but we'd be completely deluding ourselves if we chose to believe that the elites choosing wouldn't cause a crisis in perceived legitimacy, that would hurt the candidate every bit as much as Biden's senility. I don't like Biden to put it mildly, but the idea that we're just going to replace him and that won't cause greater issues, is pure cope.

Zogby outlines a practical process for selecting a different candidate and suggests quite a few. AFAIK non of his suggestions appeared on any primary ballot or caucus slates. While I know that Zogby is correct in at least one of the methods he describes (Biden releasing the delegates), I notice no one asked him how this relates to the democratic process that resulted in those delegates being assigned to Biden. He is describing how the DNC can overrule the decision made by voters. I wonder how those voters feel about his attitude.

The problem is several States have already passed the deadline for changing the ballot, so he'll be on the ballot regardless. The DNC could try some long shot legal challenges to the deadlines, but that's iffy at best.

I suggest another mechanism to select the candidate that puts the choice directly in the hands of the Democratic voters. Yes, use Zogby’s recommendation on selecting the initial set of 8 to 10 candidates. Then have these candidates give a TedX style lengthy presentation of their vision on KZbin. Then voters can vote them up utilizing modern cryptographic algorithms similar to crypto currencies yet explicitly tailored for voting (they exist) that are verifiable and mathematically authoritative. Just like on American Idol the field can be narrowed to the final selection. You can also incorporate debates, but we need to get away from some of the more superficial aspects of the debate format. All the technology is available to do this. This is really the ideal we should shoot for.

Let the Convention meet and choose their candidates. Of course, Kamala Harris would probably be the leading contender, but she should go through the Convention. No coronations!!!
