"20 Days in Mariupol": Meet the Ukrainian Filmmaker Who Risked His Life Documenting Russian Siege

Ukrainian Associated Press journalist Mstyslav Chernov joins us for an in-depth interview about how he and others risked their lives to document the Russian invasion. He is the director of the new documentary, "20 Days in Mariupol," which has just premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It tells the story of how Chernov and his colleagues documented the first three weeks of Russia's siege of the strategic eastern port city of Mariupol, even after many international journalists had fled. "The whole city spiraled down into complete chaos. People were in shock, in panic. They didn't know what to do," says Chernov, whose team was helped by locals in evading Russian soldiers and later escaping the city with their footage. The film is a co-production by the Associated Press and PBS Frontline.

There are no words for the atrocities I’ve seen in videos of bombings and the aftermath: the death before my eyes of a family trying to flee on foot, the mass graves, the tortures of civilians, dogs left behind, dogs tortured and eaten, and so much more. It blows my mind that some believe a far fetched notion that you could hire enough people to act-that well-without the world seeing the degree of organization that would require, amazes me. For every horrible thing that occurs, that tactic is used to attempt to sway public outcry, by creating cynicism, is itself an atrocity. What is the end game of global propagandists? That’s an important question-the end game.

In early 2015, I met a western-Ukrainian, at one of my local hospitals. I didn't want to be insensitive to him not knowing his sympathies/loyalties, so I just said I was sorry that things were so tough over there right now. The gesture surprised him, I think; likewise, his reply surprised me. He shook his head and said, "I'm sorry, but I don't think you realize what your country just did to mine." I figured as much then, and I know even better now.

I find this reporting to be extremely one-sided. You report that Russia is clamping down on dissent, but Ukraine's Zelensky took three TV stations off the air for opposing his war plans to take donetsk by force. You give airtime to this journalist for being brave, but he would not have to be brave, you would actually be standing in a peaceful city if NATO hadn't decided to expand into Ukraine with plans to station foreign troops and missiles on the border to threaten Russian cities, which is what started this war in the first place. So let's remember that the reason why this journalist could make his film is because he tows Zelensky's line, which is that the whole population should be cannon fodder for zelensky's militarist fantasies. If he had any other position, he would be silenced just like the other TV journalists.

This war started based on a very simple issue, which is that Russia did not want NATO to expand, which is to say that they did not want Ukraine to allow foreign troops to stand at the border and point weapons at them. They wanted Ukraine to stay neutral. NATO and Ukraine said no, they decided that they will get a better result if they fight it out. Well, there is currently no way for Russia to agree to any resolution in which they would be giving up territory, so that means that NATO wasted hundreds of thousands of lives, and they will have nothing to show for it. They should have settled the dispute and they didn't. They lost. Peace talks now, before you lose more.
