Crimea was first settled by the Greeks 2000 years ago and then by the Byzantine empire and then controlled by Venetians through till medieval times. It was then Conquered by the Mongols, then mostly settled by Crimean Tatars in the sphere of Ottoman influence. It was then annexed by the Russians in the 1700s. The Ukrainian population of the peninsula has never been over 25%. It's been Russian dominated since 1900s when the Russian population outgrew the Crimean Tatars. This is why the majority of the population want to be part of Russia. For anyone to think Crimea belongs to Ukraine is totally ignorant of history.

@Kristian only reason crimea was given to ukraine back in the soviet times is because of it's proximity. And it remained like that even after the collapse of soviet union because ukraine was suppose to be a really close russian ally so they been allowed to keep crimea despite population there being mainly russian. No one who knows at least a little bit of history cannot say that is was an occupation.
@BalthasarGelt775

@Kristian by your logic it would mean that uyghur autonomous region and tibet is inseparable part of china despite them being ethnichaly and culturaly vastly different from them and if they were to decide to gain independence, they would have no right to do so. It's baseless to say that all borders are unchangeable in any circumstance.

@Kristian dude, just because previous administration gave it to them, it doesn't means it has to be that way till the eternity. There are simple facts here, crimea prodominantly russian? Yes. Crimae was just an autonomous region of ukraine and wasn't even the core country? Yes. Countries can decide to revoke their previous policies and do something else? Yes. I mean whats even the argument here? Even the people in crimea doesnt wants ukraine...

Giving out Crimea to Ukraine was a terrible mistake that Khrushchev did. At that time Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union and nobody thought the USSR is going to collapse. When the collapse happened, a territory with the majority of Russian population and strategically important to Russia's security ended up being a part of another country.

That's not quite right. it was the Government of the failed USSR led by Mikail Gorbachev that provided Russia and the other 14 republics the opportunity to grow and prosper with the rest of the World. Putin knows his control of Russia and the other 14 countries maintains the regions isolation and his personal wealth. Unfortunately for the Russian people Putin's expansionist crusade reduces any possibility of Russia's and the Worlds security.

In the last several months, under Russian occupation, those difficulties have become critical: according to Russian officials, the region has seen its reserves of potable water decline by 60 percent and will entirely run out of supplies of this critical natural resource sometime in July or August (Gazeta.ua, May 21).

Apart from the rich guy, the lion sanctuary, or whatever that zoo was, gave a pretty bleak picture about how the Crimean economy took a hit due to travel blockade and international sanctions. To this day, any person who travels to Crimea, devoid of political motivation, is treated somewhat as persona non grata if they later enter Ukraine. At the end of the day, politicians sip on their Scotch while the people get f'd over the dispute; losing access to fresh water in the process - that's a great strategy for wining hearts and minds I'm sure.

Crimea has become a nomansland, it's not Ukraine anymore, but also not fully Russia. P.S: my former best friend,( we grew up in Sevastopol together), chose to go to Kharkiv to study, because there are no prospects in Crimea, and well, today (march the 2nd) her university was bombed by oh so friendly russian missiles. @@missourimongoose8858 I swear to you that is not true, it is a misconception used by dictatorships and their supporters to justify their rule. The Islamic region has been a unified powerful empire since 600AD with the Rashidun caliphate, the Umayyad Dynasty, the Abbasid Dynasty, and the Ottoman empire. The reason Iraq is a failed state was because the objective of the American Invasion was to destroy Iraq. In other words, their mission was a success. Before the American invasion, and this is as recently as my father's life time, when our parents went to Iraq, there were literally zero sectarian tensions between Iraqi Sunnis and Shias. They married into each other's families, both served in the police and military, both were equal citizens. The American invasion caused the civil war and the subsequent sectarian blood bath.

@Tohdette 2 жыл бұрын
@@missourimongoose8858 That is after the war, not before. It is not like that all over the Middle East. That is simply not a factual statement. I'm not saying this just to argue. Islam is not a religion of peace or violence, its a religion that is practiced by peaceful and violent people (just like any other religions). Middle East is not peaceful or violent. If you invade, occupy, destroy, dismantle, sanction, blockade countries, they end up in a very dire state. The Middle East didn't just magically become what it is today. It was the British Empire and the French that turned the Ottoman Empire into 22 different war torn countries through sabotage, infiltration, military interference, occupation, and installment of corrupt dictatorships and monarchs. I know you have a perspective, but it is based on your observation of what you see in front of you...I recommend adding historical context to your way of thinking so that you can be more fact based when you make an argument (again, not saying this to pick a fight).

In reality the majority of whatever he is talking about was stolen by the oligarchs who „invested” russian tax payer money in Crimea. All projects in Russia are handed to Putin loyalist oligarchs who are allowed to defraude most of the money. Thats why this guy is fo flexible with numbers.

kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJ_MqpiNh6yChbc talk-shows are extremely aggressive in Russia in general. Something like Jerry Springer's show format, except the people are real and somewhat famous. Based on the date of the video and the word "crisis" on the screen i think they were discussing economic crisis of 2008-2009 impact on economy. Can't really think how did they manage to start a fight around this topic.. The guy who got punched is Sergei Polonskiy, also a millionaire/billionaire (at least back then). He built one of the towers in Moscow-City. Later went bankrupt. Was charged with appropriating peoples funds. Bought an island in Cambodia and was hiding there for couple of years, so also a pretty interesting character. In this video Polonski said that he wants to punch someone (not specific) in the face for some bullshit that was said earlier on the show. I'm guessing Lebedev must have been talking just before and took it personally.

The referendum of 20 Jan 1991 was about Crimea to return Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, was nothing about "to join Russia", my little russian propagandist liar... By the way,do you know one of the (many) reasons why 2014 referendum was considered unvalid? It's because there wasn't the option of indipendency of Crimea. Moreover it worth to be mentioned that the 1 Dec 1991 referendum, 54.19% of Crimeans voted for indipendency of Ukraine, as well as 57.07% did in Sebastopol city. Впрочем, удалось. Создали крутейший курорт по меркам всего Советского Союза. Но что сделали русские? Правильно. Пришли и разрушили то, что строилось годами. Десятками лет.
