Crimea was first settled by the Greeks 2000 years ago and then by the Byzantine empire and then controlled by Venetians through till medieval times. It was then Conquered by the Mongols, then mostly settled by Crimean Tatars in the sphere of Ottoman influence. It was then annexed by the Russians in the 1700s. The Ukrainian population of the peninsula has never been over 25%. It's been Russian dominated since 1900s when the Russian population outgrew the Crimean Tatars. This is why the majority of the population want to be part of Russia. For anyone to think Crimea belongs to Ukraine is totally ignorant of history.

Giving out Crimea to Ukraine was a terrible mistake that Khrushchev did. At that time Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union and nobody thought the USSR is going to collapse. Crimea has become a nomansland, it's not Ukraine anymore, but also not fully Russia. It's the same with Iraq. As an Arab, I can tell you that many Iraqis that sided with the American invasion and occupation of their country feel the exact same way now. @Tohdette2 жыл бұрын
@@missourimongoose8858 I swear to you that is not true, it is a misconception used by dictatorships and their supporters to justify their rule. The Islamic region has been a unified powerful empire since 600AD with the Rashidun caliphate, the Umayyad Dynasty, the Abbasid Dynasty, and the Ottoman empire. The reason Iraq is a failed state was because the objective of the American Invasion was to destroy Iraq. In other words, their mission was a success. Before the American invasion, and this is as recently as my father's life time, when our parents went to Iraq, there were literally zero sectarian tensions between Iraqi Sunnis and Shias. They married into each other's families, both served in the police and military, both were equal citizens. The American invasion caused the civil war and the subsequent sectarian blood bath.

@Tohdette2 жыл бұрын
@@missourimongoose8858 That is after the war, not before. It is not like that all over the Middle East. That is simply not a factual statement. I'm not saying this just to argue. Islam is not a religion of peace or violence, its a religion that is practiced by peaceful and violent people (just like any other religions). Middle East is not peaceful or violent. If you invade, occupy, destroy, dismantle, sanction, blockade countries, they end up in a very dire state. The Middle East didn't just magically become what it is today. It was the British Empire and the French that turned the Ottoman Empire into 22 different war torn countries through sabotage, infiltration, military interference, occupation, and installment of corrupt dictatorships and monarchs. I know you have a perspective, but it is based on your observation of what you see in front of you...I recommend adding historical context to your way of thinking so that you can be more fact based when you make an argument (again, not saying this to pick a fight).

When my grandmother was born in Crimea it was a part of Russia (before 1954 assignment to Ukraine), on the 20 Jan 1991 referendum in Crimea my grandmother and my uncle voted for leaving Ukraine and to join Russia, 93% people voted for the same, in 2014 my uncle voted in Crimea to rejoin Russia, sadly my grandmother died by that time. Quite a tough road they took to get back home.

What a stupid lie-the January 1991 had nothing to do with joining Russia, but with re-establishing the Crimean Autonomous Soviet Republic (which eventually just became the Autonomous Republic). Why lie about something anyone can check? Think you can just mould reality like that? Either that or your uncle and your grandmother to you, and what a pair of deluded losers they must be.

The referendum of 20 Jan 1991 was about Crimea to return Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, was nothing about "to join Russia", my little russian propagandist liar... By the way,do you know one of the (many) reasons why 2014 referendum was considered unvalid? It's because there wasn't the option of indipendency of Crimea. Moreover it worth to be mentioned that the 1 Dec 1991 referendum, 54.19% of Crimeans voted for indipendency of Ukraine, as well as 57.07% did in Sebastopol city. Just watched it as well. And also getting more information on other sources about what happened in 2014, for example. It seems to me that both the east and the west have been pulling on Ukraine. As a Western European citizen, I have to wonder about the rule of law, especially in the east, with nationalists fighting with separatists. Still, what Russia is doing now has to stop. And the EU has to wake up. But I think that mostly already happened. By the way, I'm Dutch, and MH17 is still an unfinished chapter as well.

That line made me burst out laughing. Remember in the 2010s when journalists critical of the government ended up mysteriously murdered at a higher rate than any other country on earth? Now they just disappear. Unless they’re high profile “rebels” who want to promote democratization reforms in the Duma. Then they are just declared terrorists and imprisoned indefinitely after the initial assassination attempt in a foreign country they were being sheltered in fails.

I visited Crimea in 2010 with my (by now) wife; she is from middle Volga region of Russia. Landed in Simferopol and stayed in Alushta, with excursions to Yalta and Balaklava amongst other places. I well remember Ayu Dag ... The Crimea I saw is beautiful, and I remember thinking I could live here. I enjoyed my visit immensely and would love to return again. It breaks my heart to see the discord between the Ukrainian and Russian countries ... and I hope and pray their differences will be settled without warfare.
