One of the problems is that indigenous Hawaiians in Maui "don't own enough of the island" to have the power to decide how that land is going to be used. These people were colonized by a foreign government that set them up to fail, insuring that they and all of their descendants would be coolies for the colonizers, paying taxes as "protection money". The area should rebuild again when it's able too, but I also think they should build a heiau in the area as well for those who have been lost and may never be fully recovered. As a former resident of Kauai and a fire survivor in Northern California and as a climate change educator - I am deeply grateful to Kapua'ala Sproat, who gives a sweeping and masterful overview of the situation on Maui and the Hawaiian Islands in general. I learned first hand how corrupt the state and local governments are on Hawaii. While living on Kauai my particular concern was focused on the giants of the chemical industry who have made Kauai the most toxic and polluted agriculture in the world. The experiments there are unprecedented and secret (the government allowing these corporations to do whatever they want) using unknown combinations of chemicals to do experiments on their "products" in open fields and subjecting these toxins on the people who live there. It’s soul destroying to understand what is happening to this most precious and beautiful island and Hawaii as a whole.
