Ukraine has accused Russia of bombing a dam in the southern city of Kryvyi Rih - where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was born - forcing evacuation in parts of the city due to flooding. The bombing is the latest Russian attack on civilain infrastructure since Ukrainian forces recaptured over 3,000 square miles of territory from Russia during a counteroffensive this past week. For more, we speak with New York-based artist and author Molly Crabapple, who just published a series of sketches documenting her recent travels across Ukraine alongside Ukrainian journalist and motorcyclist Anna Grechishkina. "I wanted to see with my own eyes how Ukrainians were writing and defining their own future," says Crabapple. Her new piece is titled "In the Shadow of Invasion."

When it comes to WW2, I would say only Germany and France (to an extent) have done the "work" in terms of examining their culpability and role in what occurred. Germany yes, somewhat, eventually, and maybe only really now. France? Are you kidding me? - Remember that the entire goal of Nazi Germany was to conquer Ukraine and turn it into a colony (it's in Mein Kampf and the second book) - The Ukrainians had been victims of a genocide by the Soviets in 1932 and 1933. The Nazis were aware of this and their original model for eliminating populations (Jews, Ukrainians) was based on this model. - The Germans funded the UPA (Ukrainian fascists), and released it's members from Polish and Soviet prisons, turning a small illegal group on the periphery of Ukrainian political life, into the one permitted Ukrainian political formation, provided them with arms, and used them to provide security for the work of the Einstazgruppen (e.g. Babi Yar). - The UPA continued a guerrilla war against the Soviets after the Germans were gone. Many Ukrainians, unfamiliar with the UPA, saw them as allies under the illusion of "any enemy of my enemy must be my friend". - More Ukrainians died fighting the Nazis than Russians, more than Americans, British and French combined. - Germany has apologised for the Holocaust. But has not fully recognized why it started the war, and how it lead to the Holocaust. They have often continued to maintain a world view that was the inheritance of that Nazi ideology, and the current propaganda of Russia, that Ukraine is not a nation and that the Soviet Union and their army in WWII can be equated with Russia. - More French died fighting for the Nazis than against them. After the fall of France, three quarters of the French service men in Britain asked to return to occupied France, only 7,000 stayed and joined the allies. After WWII ended France continued to try and maintain an empire, fighting in Africa and Indochina until they lost all these wars. - Poland and Ukraine have their problems with their histories. Their historians have written some great books on the subject. In Poland the current government is very conservative and has authoritarian elements which has set things back. They both also have fascist groups, but they are about as powerful as the AFD in Germany and smaller than the fascists in France or Italy (or the USA).

@@celiabarrett2107 Sadly, I think I have a pretty good idea. I see PiS as very similar to the GOP before its complete take over by Trump. Yes, it's very right wing, full of people who love their dirty tricks, their portrayal of themselves as the only true patriots, embracing the Catholic church as a shield. And yes, they have their MAGA like extremists with conspiracy theories (like the Smolensk crash). However, like the GOP they embrace right-wing policies that are to the right of the majority (e.g. abortion laws). They should by all rights lose an election, but they have seized control of virtually all of the national media and they control the courts. The opposition is largely fragmented and some are discredited as "elitist neo-liberal globalists". However, the majority reject a path that leads any further towards Putin or Orban, they support the EU, and they support Ukraine. So, I know that things can be much better, but yes, the path will not be easy.

@George. You're kidding right? I'm afraid PiS are very popular with the majority. I suggest you read Hadley Freeman's book, The House of Glass, she's got a chapter about Poland and the way neo nazis values are tolerated. Sure, people support Ukraine for now. But how did they behave to other refugees from September 2021? Left them to freeze, and so on. Did you know how restricted local people were during that time? No press allowed, only the twittering of the Border Guard.. If people helped them, they got into trouble.. But yeah, it'll be fine.

Hey Molly, why is the road to Babi Yar named for Stepan Bandera?
@George-2115
@George-2115 Жыл бұрын
Bandera is a very "problematic" character, much like Robert E. Lee. In the U.S. for over 150 years, and even now, some commemorate Lee and the confederate flag, claiming it has nothing to do with slavery, but only "states rights" or "southern pride". In the 30's and during WWII Ukraine had two empires that competed for it. Stalin's USSR and Hitler's Nazi Germany, and both killed millions of Ukrainians. Some saw Bandera as a hero because his UPA fought against the Soviets, and sometimes even against the Germans. However, they conveniently forget about the collaboration with the Germans, helping to enable the Holocaust or their own murder of over 100,000 Poles. On the other hand more Ukrainians fought and died in the Soviet army or with partisans fighting against Nazi Germany than did Russians. Not surprising considering the geography of the war. All of Ukraine was occupied by the Germans, whereas only about 5% of Russia was ever occupied. On the other hand Russians also collaborated with the Nazis. They had their own Russian collaborationist army KONR (~130,000) and SS brigades like SS RONA (~12,000), so roughly the same size as Bandera's UPA. So yes, the fact that some see Bandera as a hero is disturbing. However, that is a not insignificant, but shrinking minority. It is something that Zelenskyy has explicitly opposed. On the other hand, Russia not only has its own fascist organizations, but Putin himself has explicitly embraced Ivan Ilyin, a follower of Mussolini who provides a Russian model of fascism tied to the orthodox church. Putin had his body moved and buried in Russia. Has regularly appeared at his tomb. Has had all his papers purchased and moved to Russia. Has had his collected works published. Virtually every European country has some fascist organizations or parties. However, since WWII, Russia is the only country in Europe whose leader has embraced fascism (and yes, more explicitly than Trump in the US), and more than that, has gone on to invade other countries in furtherance of a fascist vision.

I'm a big fan of Chomsky. I don't believe he would have any problems with this report. He has explicitly called the Russian invasion a crime and a mistake. He has even supported the provision of arms to Ukraine so that it can defend itself. He has, however, warned about the exploitation of the invasion of Ukraine as a means for the US to have a proxy war against Russia, and argues that US policy has been to make such a war more likely. Certainly there are such forces in the US, and we need to be wary of them. However, we must not fall for the Russian propaganda, which has taken quotes from Chomsky out of context to make it appear that he supports the war (the exact opposite of the truth), or that he supports the fascist ideology of Putin (that of Ivan Ilyin, the explicit advocate of Mussolini). We also must not fall for the right-wing "Realpolitik" of Kissinger or Mearsheimer, who would sell anybody in the name of the status quo.

The idea that people have that their own countries are "fighting for the weak and powerless" is a misconception. States and empires fight for their own benefit, and there is always a "price tag" for "help". States and empires don't "fight to help weak countries/people". *In case there is a power imbalance: The grand strategy is called "the proxy".* The "big brother" is the benefactor. The "little brother" is always in danger of becoming a proxy, involuntarily sacrificed for the gain of "the big brother". Unless the "big brother" and the "little brother" are in the same boat by means of a binding treaty, there is no equality in outcome. Unless the "brothers in arms" are exposed to the same or similar level of danger and are facing the same or similar potential ill-effects due to own actions/inactions, then it is an unequal relationship. Unless all parties suffer similar percentages of financial and human losses, and risk a similar percentage of destruction to their property and territory, then it is in effect "a proxy" which has been set up for the fall. The ones losing most are always the "proxies" of course (hist‌orical analysis, with multiple examples). In politics and big business, nobody does anything for free. How one writes history is more a matter of framing: for example the widespread misconception of "good empires on the right side of history, fighting for the little guy" (aka "the poor people"-argument): notice just how...ahem..."coincidentally" these "poor people" just happen to live in regions of the planet with raw materials/strategic value. Empires are suspiciously very keen on "fighting for democracy/freedom" or "poor people" when these battles take place in areas of the planet benefitting own gain in some or other form, or if it is beneficial to the own rise in power. *In strategy, the so-called "fighting for the little guy/democracy/freedom" is nothing else than "creating a proxy" or "proxy wars" for own gain.* It's the same thing, simply using different words or "putting a spin" on words by changing the perspective, thereby making it more palatable and advantangeous to the own cause, which is own gain.

Yes, empires love the proxy strategy. But consider Europe. After all those European Empires, Germany, France, England, Spain, Holland, Portugal.... ALL empires, when they lost all their imperial wars, when they lost all their colonies, that's when they formed the EU -- as an alternative to empire. It's not that they learned that "wars are bad", it's when they could no longer win those wars. They needed an alternative, a framework that would allow smaller non-imperial states to co-exist, supported by each other. After that there were no wars that they started (the US is different, it's still an empire, it has not yet come to terms with its past crimes, but it will be forced to do so). There are many problems with the EU, but it is a potential alternative to empire. That is what Ukraine has realized and why it wants in.

So they elected the primarily Russian speaking candidate, who had a Jewish background, and campaigned on the basis of negotiating an end to the war with Russia, namely Zelenskyy. After Russia's invasion now even the most Russian of Ukrainians are joining the Ukrainian army. If you can recognise Russian, you might notice from watching the videos that many Ukrainian soldiers communicate with each other in Russian. Before the war more than 50% of Ukrainians spoke Russian better than Ukrainian. For better or worse, their children may decide not to speak Russian though. Language is not the same as nationality. I am a most unhappy man. I have unwittingly ruined my country. A great industrial nation is controlled by its system of credit. Our system of credit is concentrated. The growth of the nation, therefore, and all our activities are in the hands of a few men. We have come to be one of the worst ruled, one of the most completely controlled and dominated Governments in the civilized world - no longer a Government by free opinion, no longer a Government by conviction and the vote of the majority, but a Government by the opinion and duress of a small group of dominant men.

Was Stepan Bandera involved in Saving Jews from nazis?? I’m a bit confused! He’s highly celebrated in Ukrainians! Definitely he was a pro democratic values guy and was beloved by Polish and Ukrainian Jews!
@celiabarrett2107
@celiabarrett2107 2 жыл бұрын
@Jan. I can explain my friend... Why its puzzling to us that Bandera is revered.. He was a Nazi sympathiser. When Yushchenko declared him a Hero of Ukraine it was condemned on an international level Inc by the US. I think Ukraine can find some better heros if they tried hard enough. He's a bad choice. I feel sick when I see those celebrations on New Year's Day. I'm well aware it's a minority of fanatics on the marches but really, even taking the most positive view, that Bandera joined the Nazis in the hope they would help Ukrainian independence(backfired anyhow), just doesn't sit well with most of us. I say this as someone married to a Polish citizen, who has educated me on these matters.

As a Jew from Odessa did you not find it odd that during the discussion of Babi Yar there was no mention of the fact that those atrocities were committed by Ukrainians? Banderuskiy? The same people who were the idealogical forefathers of today’s ultranationalist cadres? The guys with the Hitler tattoos? If I didn’t know the history well I would have thought that it was the Russians who did the killing at Babi Yar and not the OUN. My ex wife was from Ukraine. Her Ukrainian grandfather fought for USSR. He taught my wife that Jews were good people. Bandera? A fascist bigot murderer. What kind of Ukraine do you want to live in? One run by the Azov?

@@carlkappel I’ve also noticed that in interview there was no mentioning that 80 000 Kiev Jews was killed in Babiy Yar by nazis (German and Ukrainian). So, Yes, for any person who does not know that story it’s easy to conclude that it was done by Soviets (or in current circumstances read as Russians) very subtle manipulation. I think this Савелий guy is a bot to provoke a discussion. I am also from Odessa and I can tell you that Савелий is not a Jewish name and absolutely uncommon in Odessa.

@@dmitribegood I’ve seen this manipulation over Babi Yar before. National Public Radio ran a story last year about some bombs which fell near there and if you didn’t know the history (and most Americans know nothing frankly) you would have thought Babi Yar had been a Soviet crime.
