democracynow.org - Actors including Viggo Mortensen, Peter Sarsgaard, and Kelly MacDonald are gathering in New York today for a reading of "Voices of a People’s History of the United States," based on the late historian Howard Zinn’s book "People’s History of the United States" - which has sold over a million copies. The event marks the 10th anniversary of publication of "Voices," which was edited by Zinn and Anthony Arnove. Mortensen, an Academy Award-nominated actor whose credits include The Lord of the Rings trilogy, has appeared in numerous performances of "Voices” and is a cast member of the television documentary version, "The People Speak." He joins us along with Anthony Arnove to discuss the 10th anniversary of "Voices" and its continued political relevance today.

Consider myself so lucky to have seen Zinn speak in Boston about Sacco and Vanzetti. My A.P U.S History class used Zinn's Peoples History of the United States as our textbook. Watched Chomsky speak on CSPAN-2 while trying to watch scrambled Playboy channel at my aunts house at 12 years old Those two started me down my rabbit hole and I am forever grateful.

What an experience. I can only imagine you as a 12 year old, and how you connected those teachings to your future self.

@@edeancozzens3833yes, sure, read Debunking Howard Zinn. And then, before or after that, read Howard Zinn. It doesn't take much time to discern who the genuine writer is. On is arguing from a safe and emotionally guarded position, the other is arguing based on transcendent questions asked based on lived experience - some of the more glorified spectacles in modern history mind you (Great Depression, WW2, Vietnam, Civil Rights Movements). Howard Zinn is authentic. He bombed innocent people in WW2 and had to reconcile that the rest of his life. "It was the right thing to do" didn't cut it for him like it does for the simplistic like Mary Grabar. Noone wants to be ashamed of history (ashamed isn't even the right word), but there is even more shame in ignoring it or justifying it based on pure tribal allegiance

20 years ago I was traveling inland from the Barcelona coast, just heading west I came upon a village which to this day I can't remember the name but I was informed by an English speaking tourist that no way should I leave the place without visiting the local catholic church. Later the same day I walked into this unassuming building where I met the local priest. He excitedly brought me up to the "famous" alter which he informed me was completely 100% Gold......Now I'm not a religious man , so standing beside the beaming cleric looking up at this monument to man's greed and inhumanity to his fellow man I informed said priest that I felt sick... We walked outside where I explained to him my revulsion at the sight of a 30ft x 15ft object covered in a natural substance that has undoubtedly caused the deaths of thousands of native people's. He was completely shocked and simply walked away....... As I drove away from the village the vision of massacre to acquire such a pathetic object still haunted me.......All for the glory of God.........Wonder what God thinks..?
