Six years of Donald Trump's tax returns were released by a House committee on Friday after a years-long legal battle by the former president to keep them sealed. Early revelations include the finding that Trump paid just $750 in federal income tax during his first year in office in 2017, and he paid no tax in 2020. The newly released tax records give a long-overdue glimpse of Trump's personal and business finances, which he refused to disclose during the 2016 presidential election, breaking with decades of precedent. Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter David Cay Johnston, who has covered Trump for decades, says the new documents show "absolutely brazen" tax fraud. "Donald Trump has been a criminal his whole life," says Johnston.

I’m tired of hearing how tired people are of hearing about it. I get it, I do, there needs to be accountability and justice. But I also have respect for the fact we’re in uncharted territory and what do we laypeople know about what was laid out for DOJ and others? We’ll gripe more if it gets botched. Now that we are all aware of the lack of tax collection on the wealthy, I'd love to see a drastic change in the IRS getting the tax money owed from the wealthy. If the wealthy were held accountable , this country would be in a position to update our infrastructure , care for our seniors, etc.

In 1995 I sold a stock from the company I worked for, I got it from an ESOP, an employee stock ownership plan. I had never boght a stock before in my life, and I had no idea how it worked, if I had to pay taxes on the sale, or anything. All I knew was that I had about $900 in stock, and the company paid half, I paid the other half. So I was into it for about $450. Then I sold it when the plant closed, I made $900. Nobody at the company, or anyone else ever told me I had to claim it as income, and pay a tax on it. So about a year later I get a letter in the mail from the IRS. It said because I dod not claim it as income and pay taxes on it, I would have to pay the tax, and a penalty. So they busted me for a lousy $900 stock sale. And I was only making about $24k a year (at the time) in 1995, as a Journeyman Cutter at International Paper Company. They went after little guys like me, while multi-millionaires get away with cheating the government out of millions every year.

The system is murky. But considering the number of people who have gone to court, been convicted, gone to jail, had assets seized, etc., this proves that laws are on the books. The laws have been applied to people sho refuse to pay, as well as those who pay, but an amount less than required (lawyers can make their fortune arguing about the amount). If a defendant claimed that he violated no law, and the IRS was unable to prove him wrong, it would be 'case dismissed' in favor of the defendant. Were there ever such a victory, you can bet Congress would INSTANTLY remedy that by creating a law which closes such a loophole.

A business owner may have businesses that earned millions but to operate, modernize, and expand businesses required most of that money be plowed back into the corporation all the while paying the company owner a salary that is nothing like the income of the companies. I was a tax preparer and saved my clients thousands of dollars by helping them plan for each year and the tax code laws. You avoid taxes as a boss by stock buy backs that drive up stock prices and you take out loans from banks using stock as collateral that way you never pay a tax because there are no taxes on debt.
