African citizens want democracy. Yet they recognize there is still much progress to be made, varying significantly by country. Africa Research Director Joseph Siegle looks at the prospects and trends of democratization across Africa. Africa has seen a decline in the number of authoritarian regimes since the 1980s, and yet the number of democracies has not increase commensurately. The result is a large number of governments in an intermediate "democratizing" stage.
Why does this matter for security? Because there is a strong link between governance and security. 10 of the 12 ongoing armed conflicts in Africa are happening in autocratic countries, and 90% of Africa's huge displaced population are from autocracies.
