I used to install septic tanks in the Ozarks and had to blast from time to time....this is EXACTLY how you do it. When the shot goes off, you just get a little bit of "lift"...and that's it! If you are throwing debris into the air, the shot is too hot or you didn't put enough burden over it. Good Job!

I lived in Mt. Isa in north-west Queensland for 12 years and most of that place is built on rock. Every now and then, we could hear some one blasting at the north of town and that always meant someone in town had died. The ground out at the cemetery was so hard, they had to drill and fire it just to get a grave dug. Talk about waking the dead!

Why was the capsule sent to the hole with the hole facing the bottom of the hole and not the mouth? (second 0:50 per munite)
@demolitiondavedrillandblast5 жыл бұрын
- Why did I not reverse prime - I think this is your question. I'm of the opinion that reverse priming is not practical when the length of the detonator is longer than the piece of packaged explosive into which the detonator is inserted, these holes were primed with only 1/3 of a stick of packaged explosive, if you reverse prime then the packaged explosive does not reach the bottom of the hole because the detonator is too long, when you add ANFO this ends up at the bottom of the hole when you want the strongest explosive at the bottom.

Hi Dave, Nice work on all your videos showing your expertise and attention to detail !!! I notice you pay particular attention to hole depth. Do you drill your holes a specific amount deeper than say the elevation of the bottom of the proposed foundation footing ?
@demolitiondavedrillandblast5 жыл бұрын
Yes and no, as a general rule when using millisecond delay detonators you would sub drill 1/3 of the hole spacing and this ensures that there is minimal high spots, If you can get away with using det cord and fire every hole at exactly the same time there is a tendency to shear perfectly level at the bottom of the holes if you get the loading rate just right.
@oscarmuffin43226 жыл бұрын
I know the main purpose of the soft fill and mats is to prevent excessive noise and flying debris but does it make the effects of the blast on the rock weaker or stronger? I'd like to imagine that all that dirt concentrates it and makes the effect greater but on the other hand you have the shock lifting all of that dirt up and using energy to do so.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast6 жыл бұрын
The soil cover tends to lessen the effect of the blast, the theory is that the when the compression wave from the detonation meets with the edge of the rock, a lot of the energy is dissipated into the surrounding earth or soil cover. If there is no surrounding earth or cover then the energy in the compression wave is reflected back as a tension wave and this further contributes to the fragmentation.

Having said that,I've never really had a catastrophic mess up that has hurt people or caused big damage, The most common blast failure (that can be seen in my next video) is when you get a failure to break up the rock as intended because of 1/ you calculated load of explosives is only just enough and 2/ you have unknowingly drilled through a thin bedding plane of soft material between two layers of rock, the underlying rock is smashed up and you are stuck with a huge undamaged piece on top that wont move. What are you loading the holes with? Detonator, booster, ANFO prill, rock dust then gravel? The charges seem small for the size of granite but clearly the rock fractured well.
@demolitiondavedrillandblast7 жыл бұрын
The holes in this piece were all between 500 and 700 mm deep and spaced on a 500mm square pattern, they were loaded with 1/3 of a plug of 32mm packaged emulsion, the longer holes also got a tiny bit of anfo. I added the stone dust after the anfo as a barrier between the anfo and the wet 5mm crushed rock that I was using for stemming as anfo is very hydroscopic and it would suck the moisture out of the stemming in a short time and be ruined by the moisture. Load rate was about 425g/m3 which is a bit on the high side but as the as the hole depth gets closer to equalling the burden and spacing the load rate must increase or the holes will just eject their stemming which is a very costly failure.
