Lewis and Clark stayed safe with no injuns attacking them because they gave a demonstration to each tribe they met. It took one thousand pumps to fill it. After loading, with just a flick of the bolt it charged and loaded the next round. I don;t know why they don't make modern versions. Also, Napoleon had standing orders that if anyone was caught with an air rifle they were to be put to death immediately. Air rifle men would sneak into camps and pick off the officers .

@party4lifedude4 жыл бұрын
I learned this recently also. I always thought air rifles were a new concept, but they've been around since the 1500s. And I could see why they would be an attractive alternative to muskets considering how many shots you can get off in between refilling the tank, and how accurate and effective they were. For a while they were more accurate than the typical black powder rifle. You would have to manually refill the tanks with a pump similar to one you'd use for a bike which would take a bit of time, but some of them had tanks that you could remove and swap for a pre-filled tank and continue shooting.
@Fernando-sd6xt4 жыл бұрын
@@party4lifedude If you think about it, most guns work the same way, it's just that those burning gunpowder generate the high pressure on demand and per bullet, while air rifles get it from elsewhere and store it. In many ways that can be to their advantage. They even featured in the original Sherlock Holmes stories, where the sinister Moriarty assassins used air rifles because of their quiet operation. No match, of course, for the crafty Holmes who fitted his windows with metal blinds to ward off their pellets.

So what is your favorite air rifle? Im getting very intrigued on this idea
@EnhancedCognition Жыл бұрын
@@nitrojunki4249 I have a few, My favorite right now is the FX Airguns Dynamic .35 cal which essentially fires a .357 round at 200 foot lbs of energy which is the cut off limit for what most states want for dear hunting. But, here is the thing, they can be pushed to 300ft/lbs with a longer barrel (traps more energy) which will have a clean pass through from both ribs and both lungs for a humane kill. There are of course more powerful PCP air rifles out their, but most with energy beyond that right now are single shot (big bore guns), whereas this one is semi/auto with anywhere between 10 and 20 rounds per clip. Another good one to consider are the western air rifles rattler and/or sidewinder if you just so happen to want full auto ...

use helium next time. You'll be able to get MUCH faster velocities out of the air rifle, it's a legitimate thing, don't feel like explaining it >.
@darkminer648 жыл бұрын
helium is much lighter than nitrogen and oxygen (AKA air) therefor it goes much faster (less resistance). there, I explained it for you.
@tangerian3198 жыл бұрын
well, the physics behind it is much MUCH more complicated than that. It has NOTHING to do with density per say, it has to do with the physical size of the atoms, Helium is much MUCH smaller than molecules in air, and thus do not run into each other as frequently, and thus can impart more energy into the projectile much more effectively. There's a video on youtube, probably like a hundred of them that explains it much, much better than I care to do in a comment. Either way, whether I'm right or you are, it would still be one hell of an interesting experiment to run with this weapon, given that there are air rifles out there that use helium (or even Hydrogen) to have a muzzle velocity that reaches close to orbital velocities, which is crazy. not saying that the air rifle featured in this video would be able to do that, but... there are these rifles out there.

Nail guns dont work that way (hollywood bs), they have multiple safeties, but its a air hammer design so if you bypassed them it still would just drop to the ground after a few feet. But ya you can buy full auto air guns. They kinda suck though. The gas density is limited in the expansion chamber and a portion of the energy is used in the blowback to cycle the next projectile/pellet/BB/round whatever.

I've got the .45 version. Nice, accurate gun that's dirt cheap to shoot, especially if you catch the lead and recast it. I tend to use mine with a 295 grain hollow-base bullet. One thing with air guns is that, since the pressure is constant, they absorb the energy more efficiently as the bullet gets heavier. Oh, and there are magazine-fed variants. I've also got a 9mm one that takes 5 round stick magazines. Gets 30-40 shots on a charge depending on how high I set the pressure dial. Of course, I don't have a fill tank, so I have to use a hand pump... That's a bit of a workout... I haven't seen any full-auto ones larger than 25 caliber, but it wouldn't surprise me if they exist somewhere.

One small point of fact: the ATF does not make any laws. They only enforce existing laws. Some of that enforcement involves trying to interpret the law, which can change over time, but that is not the same as enacting legislation.

You've got it backwards. Those regulations are based on interpretation of federal law.
@rickthenailer8 жыл бұрын
Just for clarification, If you want an external silencer in this gun, it must be registered with the ATF, since it can be used in a firearm too. Unless you make it part of the rifle, wich in this case is not a firearm. Hence all those air rifles with shouldered barrels : all the barrel is enclosed by a tube with bafles, ant that tube cannot be used in other kind of gun.

Some years back, someone came out with a rubber tube powered air rifle designed to shoot 50 cal. wire darts. They were subsequently outlawed in Ca. as idiots were taking them out and shooting highway works. Supposedly, they would easily penetrate and bullet proof vest. I've always wanted to get my hands on one. I have owned a 5 mil. cal. Sheridan for years and have brought game done with it. It's a really good, well made air rifle. I take 177 cal. wire darts and grind down the nibs til it just fits into the barrel of my 5 mil.. It will bury a 6 in. wire dart all but up to the last 1/2 in a four by four at far distance. If you should have information on where to acquire a 50 cal. air gun, please share. Thx.

Don't get me wrong, I love airguns, but you will need that compressor, and power to run it(some will run on 12v). If you have a decent sized tank, you could go a good while before refilling though. They do have high pressure bicycle type pumps, so, you could fill the rifle itself with that..it is a good workout, in a pinch, it's doable. That rifle might take 3-400 strokes, and you have to put some weight into it.

really this is stipulation based on where you live and what your doing with its shooting at range or on private land generally silencers have no restrictions but as states legalize hunting on game land the ability for state to state laws will differ thus making it legal to hunt with a pretty silenced air gun or requiring a permit for a silencer any one in the air until community will know we don't used the term silencer... moderator or ldc is the most common term as an airgun add on are not interchangeable to standard firearms material unless user modified
@DFX2KX7 жыл бұрын
@Mike Grazio If the can in question is removable, the BATFE will happily bust you for having something that could, in theory, be screwed onto an actual firearm, That much I think is pretty certain. I think James is just covering his ass here, and with the BATFE, that's not exactly a bad policy.

I used to think air rifles were a relatively new concept, but they've been around since the 1500s. Like someone pointed out here, even Lewis and Clark used one in their expeditions in the Americas. I can see how air guns were an attractive alternative to muskets, although you would need to spend quite some time filling the tanks manually with something resembling a bike pump, between filling tanks you can get quite a few shots off without reloading and they were more accurate.
