Kirby's Demon has some of my favorite double-page spreads in all of comics.

I don't know if this specific writers had an influence on Kirby. But Jason Blood always seemed to me to be inspired by occult detectives from western fiction: dudes who knew a lot about the occult, magic and ancient lore and used their powers to help other people. John Silence by Algernon Blackwood, Carnacki the Ghost Finder by Hope Hodgson, a lot of Robert Howard characters (Solomon Kane) and, in more recent years, Hellboy by Mignola.

Great shout-out to Hal Foster - any chance there is a Prince Valiant video in our future?

Kirby!!!!! Always love these Kirby podcasts. And Demon #1 is one of Jack's great first issues that really sets everything up.

I had a friend who had crossbows and catapults. It's so expensive now, but I really want to get a copy so my kids can play it.

Prince Valiant, Flash Gordon, Universal Horror Films, European Folk Tales, Weird Tales and Astounding Science Fiction, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson... it feels like Kirby had a much deeper well to draw from than most of us getting drugged on our own generation's pop culture imagery. At the same time this was on sale, Marvel put out Werewolf by Night # 1 with some great art, but they couldn't escape from their own tired formula. Jack Russell is just another Peter Parker and many of their other monsters were in the same style of Marvel's misunderstood superheroes.

Steve Ditko drew a bunch of those Demon strips in Detective Comics which is always interesting to see his take on Kirby characters. I also loved that Matt Wagner mini-series.

Kirby's "rough" style late in his career was great for horror and, in case of Silverstar, psychedelia.

I believe what you call rough style is actually his style. The other way around is when it has a heavy-handed inker.

The Demon #1 was the first comic I ever owned/read by Jack Kirby. I had heard a lot about him and had high hopes….the oddness of the anatomy and nonsensical shapes to peoples muscles confused me, but i loved it! Such a cool character and story with fantastic art - and incredible Royer inking. I proceeded to collect the whole run, followed by Kamandi. Ironically it was Garth Ennis and John McCrea’s run (the last 19 issues of the 90’s Demon) that put the character on my radar. That run was stellar, and Ennis went straight from that to Preacher. Thanks for finally highlighting my intro to Kirby! (And for informing me which other of his titles are the best!)

This brings back memories. Even though I was into comics (and Authurian legends) when this first came out, for some reason it wasn't a blip on my radar. So the 1st time I saw this story was in a DC Digest. I'll admit, even then it fell through the cracks as I read and reread the other awesome stories in the digest. But when I finally had nearly memorized everything else, I finally read it. And wow was I kicking myself for having had such a masterpiece in my hands all that time (maybe over a year). Then I spent years kicking myself once I realized it was a decade old reprint whose continuation I probably had held (to move aside) when originally on the shelves. Lol, what a rollercoaster time trip y'all put me on today. Thanks, it was a blast!

Please do a vid on Matt Wagner’s DEMON!!! A fine tale whose impact was erased by the COSMIC ODYSSEY mini, but still worth a look for the early MAGE era artwork! Also, the “Monkey King” trilogy from the Moore/Totleben/Bissette SWAMP THING run, that rejuvenated Etrigan . Jim, I was around 20 for Moore’s Etrigan: even adult minds were getting bent out of all recognition by what was appearing at that time, after decades of bland, repetitive storytelling. Moore, please! 🖖♾

Does anyone think that Royer’s literalism with the blobs, lines, and squiggles of Kirby’s pencils, especially within figures, might have hurt the final product?

A perfect first issue. Just adapt this series and you will have a great Max series. Also "4th world of the weird" implies comparison rather than tie-in.
