They would hold the two halves of the sphere apart with a flat head screwdriver coaxing it closer and closer to super criticality. Well experimenting with it they would call what they were doing tickling the dragon's tail. A joke pointing out the recklessness and dangerousness of what they were doing. Finally the screwdriver slipped out completely causing it to go super critical in a blue flash. When this happened Louis Slotin said"well that does it" referring to the immense amount of radiation they had all been exposed to.

Problem with that is that Weapons-Grade Pu 239 is a weak alpha emitter ...you can have a sphere of it in your bare hands and it wouldn't harm you at all, at least not if it's either a critical mass or it has impurities in it like Pu 240 or other Beta- and/or Gamma ray emitters
