Make sure you’re using the pen tool on the solid layer. Sometimes if it’s not selected, it just makes a shape layer instead

Got to about 10 minutes in before that super mask over the left eye confused me. Had to look up that subtractive mask to understand it a bit more. It's messing me up a bit how it interacts with the mask above. But I'm gonna tough it out and see if I can make it through. Everything made sense up to this point. I'm writing up a document as I go through so it can make sense to me when i want to try the effect again.

Okay, as I go on, maybe the mask was shaped like that to give the filling of the eye and irregular look so it's not to uniform and boring? I'm at 10:36 now...

Think 15:30 minutes is enough. No need to do the "spicing up". A few hours writing this up is enough. I'll take that as a win. Good tutorial. It could definitely use a few explanations here and there about why you're doing certain things or what certain things do. Still not sure why we ended up deleting that Mask 1 layer. Which makes me wonder if we ever needed it? Thanks for the tute!

In the mask settings, you can try using "mask expansion" to extend the mask out. Let me know if that works :)

I'm a lil lost in 5:10 I'm not finding those options (I'm new at after effects) Nevermind, I got it, just right click on the layer you want to put the effect, then you'll find "effect" (just in case someone is having the same issue)

What is the opacity on your layer? I turn that layer off to be able to draw the mask but still see the eye. When youre done with drawing the mask, when you turn the layer back on, you should be able to see it. Let me know if that helps
