I love Demon Hunter because a lot of their songs have both heavy and melodic parts to them. This one stands out to me because of how it almost never lets go of the brakes, it's high octane right from the start. Plus, timing 0:04 with a doomstick alt fire as Support or an explosion as Demolitionist feels like such a raw display of power. Those two perks are definitely the ones I have the most fun with when this song plays in Killing Floor 2.

Totally agree. It's this album's "Someone to Hate". Which is just the way I like it. :D As amazing as all of their songs are, and on this album they have a perfect balance between heavy & light, I still wish they would releases an album of pure heavy songs. I'll keep wishing, even though ballads is what has always made Demon Hunter great. I'd like to see an album with pure heavy, then one or two slow at the end or something along those lines.

they have done what alot of bands are afraid to do. they progress and change in small details that improve instead of experimenting in huge leaps and bounds. to me its what runs alot of good bands into the ground they run out of ideas because they try to keep bringing something new instead of a quality product that still moves forward. Ryan even said it in one of his interviews that he likes to do one song here and there like life war to test the waters. its whats kept them true to their style but always getting better

I find this song to be a lyrical masterpiece. At first glance, numerous portions seem cryptic. This is typical of other songs on the ‘Extremist’ album and I would imagine, much of Demon Hunter's discography. Here is my take on the meaning behind these expertly crafted lyrics: Hail victim, raise your voice [Vent your frustration] And curse this mortal chain [We endure difficulties here on earth while in our mortal bodies which can feel like a figurative prisoner’s ball & chain] Lay down your tired albatross [Lay down this figurative weight] Let Heaven hear your strain [Direct your pain heavenward] This unrelenting plague unbound Your agonizing toll Like God himself in parallel [On the line or strain opposite God we find the Enemy. They are parallel. Never touching. They are not in any way, shape or form, the same. “Like” refers to the place God holds in relation to his standing with Satan: They are directly opposite yet never intersecting. God, who is perfect and holy, is completely set apart from sin and the evil manifest in Satan and his dominion. Demon Hunter as a band highlights the experience of spiritual warfare. This is by definition a battle between God/his angels/his followers and Satan/demons/principalities/humans who practice witchcraft. This concept echoes the theme/message of ‘Artificial Light’. There exist counterfeit paradigms/knowledge/teaching which can delude many and even appear to be good/beneficial/enlightened] Delusion takes you hold [Satan’s Chief end is to kill, Steal and Destroy. I see it as a warning that many around us will be largely unsympathetic. Many may understand and acknowledge difficult circumstances in our lives, and those closer to us will often be encouraging and sympathetic. That may certainly help to a degree but the theme here is that many are unaware of the spiritual struggle. Particularly in the Western world, few (including too many Christians) have a grid for/belief in/understanding of spiritual warfare (I feel it is safe to say that in other parts of the world, a much higher proportion of the religious/spiritual population are more accepting/aware of the supernatural in every-day life). Thus it follows that you ought to ensure you also direct your expression of struggle/suffering “unto the throne” as we see below in the coming lyrics. We know from Scripture that God will hear you. He will ultimately bring absolution/vengeance. He will one day obliterate the Enemy (Satan) and his works. (I understand this expanded reflection here at the end may be out of place and not evident in these lyrics however I choose to connect this to other instances where Demon Hunter has sung about a coming judgement to the Enemy] Not one of you bastards has a cross to bear [I believe that “you bastards” refers to demons/the Enemy. It likely also refers to those around us who are oblivious to the pain spiritual warfare the Enemy inflicts. It follows that they will not attribute suffering (which may be partly/wholly a result of the Enemy’s work) to Satan and his demons. Thus, while they often have struggles of their own, they have no cross. They are not and thus perceive no need to bear a cross they do not cling to as a result of the fact they are unbelievers. It is also worth noting there exist Christians who do not follow Jesus’ command to bear their cross. As a personal comment, I wouldn’t recommend calling others, whether Christians or otherwise, “bastards”. Christ teaches us to bless those who persecute us, to be peacemakers and to be merciful (see the Beatitudes in the Gospels of Matthew and/or Luke if interested). I imagine/hope the band would intend the singer direct that otherwise unedifying term toward demons, who are wholly deserving of derisive names, and not toward other people] Not one of you bastards has a cross to bear You clench your fist unto the sky [Reinforces the call to vent to Christ’s throne in heaven] To sound your troubled mind Unto the throne of sorrow's scribe [In case one is still confused about this talk of “bearing one’s cross” this is a direct reference to Christ who commanded us to take up our cross daily. He bore his cross on his way to his “sacrifice divine” where he poured out his divine blood to cleanse believers of their sin forever] Of sacrifice divine Recoil I see you writhe in distress Hell on earth No one ever stood for pain like this Sing to me your plight unjust Define it for the rest of us No river of your tears, no sympathy will find you here Not one of you bastards has a cross to bear Not one of you bastards has a cross to bear Bite your tongue [Often it is better to not verbalize our struggle against the Enemy to those who will not understand/care. it will generally bring more frustration than relief] Bleed unsung [Christ literally bled unsung and bit his tongue. Just as we follow in his bearing of his cross, it follows from that command (and is fleshed out in his teachings elsewhere in the gospels) we should do likewise. From my own personal belief I feel it is important to share our experience of spiritual warfare with other Christians. This spiritual battle is expressed by Christ (the One who suffered the most) and elsewhere in the New Testament. I believe that this song (along with the much of Demon Hunter’s music) is written to provide understanding and empathy toward a believer’s struggle against the spiritual forces of darkness. G-D, where all good blessings flow from, sometimes gives a person that which seems contrary to everything which we are taught to be believed as correct and good. (If a person can still cry then there is hope for that person). And to my shame I've come across the most evil of evils of this world too frequently to be typical. His words are sweet even though I try to avoid all of his communications, even when all seems lost. Even though he wishes me to surcome to his worldly reasonings, I listen to his thoughts he gives indirectly that I may do the opposite unto death. He has shut me down so many times that I am truely twisted from his attention and labor. I even tempted the One who does not tempt us, when I was feeling so hopeless as I contemplated my situation I found myself in. Even if I die tomorrow, I can be counted as a peacemaker at heart, for I raged against the one who hates all that is good and innocent, because he desires all creation to be without the One who loves the creation. And the devil has convinced the world to only respect those who murder the lives which G-D has counted to be His reason of existence concerning you and your world. This is my cross which I proudly bare. For I believe the One that I cannot be separated from. For everything I do, is because I refuse to believe the devil's reality, which I prefer as normalcy in relation to others. Yet everything in my life that I cherish screams the intrusion of the supernatural which slaves for our sainity, our salvation, and our very life. For concerning G-D, I am continuing to be so surprised by the truth which heaven declares concerning my life. For I have nothing to hide concerning what I have spoken concerning everything I have proclaimed. The only thing I might say is that the LORD G-D of Irsael has never spoken directly to me as in the direction of the past prophets who proclaimed the Word of the LORD to the LORD's attention. I am no prophet for the Revelation of G-D is complete concerning this world. For where the devil's wrath and hatred ends, what is self evident in my heart of hearts and in my mind of minds begins. And I announced the intentions of the Hidden Creator whose ways are mysterious to even the shrewdest angel. My attention has always been to the ways of this Hidden Creator who will not let me neglect or forsake His attention. For my desire and perplextion shall be complete when I am told the truth concerning my relation to this world. For I have never had any control concerning my desperate situation riddled by heaven's supernatural ways. I only speak what is logical and self evident to my heart's love of our Hidden Creator that I systematically beg what His Will and Desire should be. The Almighty who revealed and showed Himself to me as I asked for His action and judgement concerning those who found my words interesting. As I spoke it was in direct response to the wrath of the evil of evils who sought me at a disturbing young age. For I have never been in control of my passions and words concerning G-D for I have desired no free will when I realized the terror and hatred of the ruler of the present evil concerning me. For this is not my dream or purpose I labor for, for I do not even consider it labor for it is so self evident and naturally logical. For the testimony of G-D and the heavens is my only comfort when I consider the evil which stands in opposition to the Will of G-D which is continually renewing my surprise in their reactions. I have been set aside to commensurate their purpose and existence to themselves and heaven. I do freak myself out about this, yet no one knows of how or why I operate concerning these things. I only dare those who are brave to come a little bit closer to my werid existence. Now you tell me of my purpose and course of action concerning my life which grows stranger every year. I have given my desire, now show me yours. Have faith for many strange things have been told to me. Most I do not believe, yet my actions do support the innocence that most don't consider. I am a slave for G-D, no matter what I do. And I do say things not for everyone's approval but to highlight that people subject myself to another higher standard that they don't even hold themselves to uphold. I am subject to the Will and desire of the Almighty who controls my destiny and words that I shall speak concerning the intensions of G-D at this present time. For I wished only to do what my Love and Refuge I have sought all my life wishes concerning me.

+Chris42k Lee If you're referring to the chorus, let me say this: Using stronger language is not really a sin on its own. The Bible mostly points towards its context, I.E. just saying "damn" when you're disappointed about something or frustrated is likely fine, but screaming "damn you" at someone when you're ticked off at them is, obviously, not. I don't think this song would fall into the second category, since it is not using the word "bastard" to insult or devalue people, but rather as a way to remind people that we're human, and to say "Hey, people make mistakes and have a hard time, but someone else did it so you don't need to", and it's also pointing out that Jesus had a far heavier weight to carry than any of us do, so saying that feels like saying you're as good as God. That's why the first verse has the line "Like God himself in parallel, delusion takes you hold". It's just saying that people thinking of themselves as equal to God is... well, delusional. It's a very blunt way of saying things, but far from what I'd call misuse of the word.

Bastard is an adjective used with persons that dont have a father, and people who didn't accept God in their hearts don't have a spiritual father, so the word "Bastard" is used as it has to, and it isnt a curse (in this case).
