I actually liked Howling Dark more than Demon in White. It just opened the universe so much.

Howling Dark is the best book in the series so far IMO, Disquiet Gods and Kingdoms of Death are very close seconds, and then Demon in White comes after them.

I think generally people would say Demon in white is best book but at the end I hear so many different opinions. For me I really can't decide even in SE books that are not my favourite there are few moments that were enough for me to be invested.

I am curious what your opinion will be for Kingdoms of Death, some people like it more than Demon in White. It is different.

I just finished Demon in White a few days ago and I really liked it, but it didn't quite live up to the prior novels for me. Felt a little awkwardly stitched together between 5 acts of varying quality with tendency for each act other than the final to drag. I found the stuff on Annica to be a less interesting rehash of the Time Tombs from Hyperion, but maybe that's just cause I'm more familiar with that. The "time goes in reverse here" thing just felt a little meh, and the MacGuffin quest to get to it took what felt like hundreds of pages for an unsatisfying result. Still loved it, but my expectations were set so high from Howling Dark and this didn't hit those same narrative highs. Kharn Sagara, Brethren, and Aranata were more interesting characters than anyone we meet in this book other than maybe the Horizon daimon.

Agreed, Howling Dark was my favorite until Disquiet Gods…again KoD and AoM are not bad, they just need to be treated as one large book and then it falls in line with DiW for me.

It's tied as 3rd best in the series with Howling Dark for me. The best for me is Disquiet Gods the latest installment and Kingdoms Of Death is a close second. Ashes Of Man is the weakest since Empire Of Silence tbh
