100% agree I remember getting it for christmas and playing it and immediately putting it down for 6 months. Then giving it one more go and and ended up invested in the series ever since. The tutorial area is not the best. Extremely unforgiving layout. In the original the pit near the start is covered with fog and definitely accounted for more deaths than in the remake. The fire wasn't as pronounced in the original either. So it wasn't as obvious as it is now that it was weak against fire. Nor was resins as well known as it was back then to use all the time. Maybe its because I was given a small quantity and most RPGs things like that I shy away from. and the Phalanx definitely gave me quite a few deaths before figuring out how to do it.
@HansOilaf3 жыл бұрын
12:17 in dark souls 1 you also can't level up before reaching firelink shrine. so basically they all have these initial barrier and i think it's a good idea
@Zeratultheking2 жыл бұрын
Dark souls 1 has a far shorter area and probably the easest of the first bosses to beat to be able to level up. You literally can take about half its health before you even start. And with the right gift can beat it before getting a weapon. Whereas phalanx has you go up a tower and back down another before bringing you back to the start. With some of the cheapest ways to kill you. As the flame barrels look almost immediately the same in the original, and so many ways to fall to your death.
@strikingdiscussion52633 жыл бұрын
Monty, the most impressive feat of this video series is your restraint in being a backseat gamer lol My gf got stuck at the same vault section at the tutorial level and I could only take two minutes of her running back and forth to and from the big gate lol this is a wonderful series 👍🏻
@doremiancleff15083 жыл бұрын
15:00 Interestingly enough, Dark Souls 3 basically has same system, but instead of cutting your HP down, you get HP and resistance bonus from using embers. If instead of showing your HP at 50%, it would shrink your health bar, i can guarantee a lot less people would find death mechanics of Dark Souls 2 and Demon's Souls that terrible. It would make it seems that being human gives you extra HP, rather than dying cutting you down.
@JasperLane3 жыл бұрын
Its all about presentation!!!!!
@nulian3 жыл бұрын
@@JasperLane So true in dark souls 3 it feels liking using a rewards using the ember to get extra health. While in dark souls 2 I just get anoyed that my health is so low. Think in the end I used ring for it and just ignored that part of my health.
@Edhelvar3 жыл бұрын
100%, I always thought that way, not that you lose health when you die but that you gain health when you beat a boss.
@aksen3033 жыл бұрын
that's an excellent point - i never think i'm being punished if i die while embered, rather that i'm being rewarded when i become embered (either through boss kill or using an ember). the mechanic really is exactly the same in DS3 and DeS (other than % difference), but i dislike it in DeS while not even considering it in DS3. huh... maybe if both DeS and DS2 had started you at half health and remove it on you first boss kill, and then behaved the same as they currently do, the mechanic in both games wouldn't be as hated...
@meh.56453 жыл бұрын
Well, embering is also far more forgiving. When you die while embered you're losing 23% of your max HP, which isn't nearly as much as Demon's Souls and isn't as much as DS2's loss at max hollowing. The mechanic being less swingy makes it feel less unbalanced and unfair because, well, it is. But the Max HP reduction mechanic is dumb in all of these games and thankfully it seems to be gone from Elden Ring. It doesn't really add anything positive and just creates needless frustration IMO.

That's why I've enjoyed this series, as well as Razbuten's, and watching Dan Ryckert's dad play Breath of the Wild on Twitch. There's so much we take for granted that seeing a less experienced person make assumptions based on real life logic and experience (such as stepping over something knee high or healing before a level-up/rest) not to mention the actual systems and mechanics, it shows there is more of an entry barrier than you might think.

A good comparison is Monster Hunter Rise. There are animals called spirit birds around the levels which boost your stats until the end of the run when collected. The birds are a buff and a pretty sizeable one when maxed, enough to double your max health. Problem is the way Rise presents this information to the player. When loading into a map we have our health bar and we have a massive empty section that fills out as we collect green birds. So while collecting them makes your max health double, the game presents it in such a way that that feels like you are operating at half max health at the start of every hunt. We all know they are a buff but the presentation makes it feel like you are penalized for not having the buff.

I don´t mind the half-health of Demon´s souls since the game is balanced around it. Most encounters assume you are at soul-form. The game is more dependent on RPG mechanics than pure action of DS3 and bloodborne, and thus I think it is superior. I don´t want all my souls games be nothing but boss-dodge-fests. There has to be actual strategy and smart play instead of reflexes and pattern learning. Also Phalanx is a great first boss that you actually has to defeat since it teaches you to move around during the boss and not stand still, and find a weakness instead of brute forcing it.

So many things i never noticed here. I’ve never once listened to npcs dialogue in these games because I don’t care about the world and am pretty much in it just for the gameplay. Miss a lot because of that. Never noticed any of the aesthetic choices like the designs on the archstones. The biggest thing though is the game encouraging you to use fire in 1-1. I play these games sword and shield and rarely alter that gameplay, so it never even crossed my mind that the game wanted me to use fire. It comes down to me not being into fantasy stuff and ignoring key aspects of the games because of that. Going to try and get more into story and world stuff in Elden Ring. Great vid!

Just came from playing Death's Door and the video starts with its OST as background music, wasn't expecting that from a Demon's Soul video xD

@ 24:00 My first time fighting this boss, I was one hit away from death because I figured the slimes would stop attacking once the big one was dead XD

Highly recommend Worldless. It's relatively short compared to other games out there, but it's beautifully made with a great story

Demon's souls ps5 was my first souls game a month ago. I absolutely adored it and became hooked on souls games. About to finish ds3 now, and watching this makes me remember just how beautiful the game was compared to every other souls game. It's so. Damn. Pretty.

I became obsessed with this game after it came out on PS3 and gained instantaneous infamy for breaking controllers (thrown through walls). It was ridiculously difficult for the time. Hindsight in a world of "soulslike" game design makes this game much easier now than it was.

Seriously, how good is the Death's Door OST! Sounds so good as the background to some Souls action!

She's getting really good. I think she's better than the average Souls player at this point. There wasn't much struggle, I mean, not for a Souls game. I actually like that the game doesn't let you level up until you've beaten Phalanx. It makes you get better and when you finally get through it, you feel like a badass. It's especially rewarding when you're replaying the game if you can get get past all of it without dying. I think this teaches you two important lessons the other games don't early on, which are resource and risk management. Thanks for another great video, you two. Be well.

I STILL remember having to look up a guide to find the monumental. Turns out games with no instruction don't have much crossover, because I had beaten morrowind and more and still had no clue what I was looking for. Like literally have the journal burned into my brain but couldn't find a doll with a moving head and a lone light source pointing to them. Me and my brother both were completely confuzzled.

11:38 you can get insight by exploration before any boss in bloodbornes first level.

You don't need to see a boss in Bloodbourne to access the Doll. All that it requires is that you gain even a single point of insight. Most bosses give you elderich insight simply by seeing them for the first time, but if you explore Yharnam you can obtain at least one Madman's Knowledge Item, which is essentially a Humanity item, granting insight. You can then return to the Hunter's Dream and speak to her before facing any bosses. A cursory wiki search indicates there are two Madman's knowledge items in Central Yharnam, so ample opportunity to get one. Edit: ...It's been a long time, but I'm pretty sure I did have to look up where the monumental was...so yea...good note for Myazaki.
