Really makes you think about how much "purity" is worth, doesn't it? This also actually overlaps with the actual Christianity somewhat. I am not sure where, but it's apparently stated that the real Antichrist will not be "anti" in that he'll be some cartoonishly evil being, or someone who is seemingly fine, but full of barely suppressed malevolence. It's said that he'll appear as a man of peace, and will seemingly preach good, but he'll use a fake gospel, a brilliantly fake gospel, to do so, thus ultimately damning all of his followers to hell. In many interpretations, he would not even be aware that's what he is doing, and will continue to believe he is doing good until the last. Of course, there's also the real-world history of this passage. If you are not a believer, you can easily assume it was written to combat the greatest threat to Christianity - any other charismatic faith leader whose teachings would pull people away. These passages were once quoted against Gandhi, and some ultra-conservative Catholics now use them about Pope Francis' doctrinal deviations. In all, food for thought.

Yeah agreed. To me it rivals when I was playing Final Fantasy VII and the slaying of Aeris. Same impact but under different circumstances, there you were hopeless to do anything to save her, but here you actually have to commit the act and how low you feel after you've killed Garl....."You....killed him didn't you?" shit man, just thinking about it brings back the feeling. High point, potentially highest in my gaming life so far. Am now after I complete NG+ and hope to platinum Demons, move onto Dark then Dark souls 2, then Bloodborne. Some great blind runs to come I'm sure if this game's anything to go on :)

this soundtrack is absolutely beautiful in a way i cant describe, the harpsicord gives me a very sad feel but the strings(i think they're strings) bolster my resolve while the harpsicord is still playing, they are times i listen to this and feel grief then other times i feel bliss, then every now and then there's a mix of the two, i havent found a track in any of the later games that make me feel this way. I never even knew i liked the harpiscord until finding this track.

@StormRevolutionGaming The brilliance of this whole thing, is that you can't actually say any of them have done anything unreasonable from their perspective. The Depraved Ones had someone arrive to alleviate their suffering for the first time in forever, and then stay there, and devote herself to them. Why wouldn't they worship her? Why wouldn't they kill the knights who would take her away from them? Why wouldn't they take the souls of these jerks, none of whom cared about them being condemned to a swamp while they wore their shiny armour, and give these souls to their goddess so that she can get stronger and heal them further, and possibly transform the valley as she grows in power? Likewise, Astraea knew that there were other Archdemons, and that they would feed The Old One with souls regardless of what she did. Even if she could have stopped them from killing the outsiders, it would have made no difference if the Demon Slayer wasn't around. The minions of some other Archdemon would have eventually reached them, killed them, and taken their souls, all so that their master could get larger and more destructive. If you don't believe the world can be saved, is it wrong to make its last days remotely bearable for the most screwed-over people in the entire world? If the Demon Slayer wasn't around, or if they died somewhere along the way, and the player dropped the game, all of that makes perfect sense. However, you are there, you CAN save the world, and now you have to kill her to do it. It's exactly the most powerful kind of tragedy that we also see in the real world, when people with good intentions collide because their visions of the world are irreconcilable, and at worst, they end up killing each other because of it.

It's always ironic that in the deepest depths of the rotten world, you find a healer and her paladin healing the sick. It's tragic that she has one of the great demon souls (or whatever it was you were after) for your quest, therefore she had to die. It was cool and really rememberable how the fight itself is more of a journey to get to the heale. You had a choice: Avoid the paladin and fight through the mob of sick to get reach the healer and kill her before anyone rescues her? Jump down the ravine into the pool of blood avoiding all confrontation but at the great risk of being swarmed by the sick and the paladin, along with whatever was also in that ravine? Or face the paladin, the shortest, deadliest, yet easiest route? The paladin was a parry master, brandishing his massive club, he will crush you if you make the wrong move. However if you do find a way around his shield or better yet, give him a taste of his own medicine then the fight will be over. Where in his defeat, the healer will give up and end her life to give you what it was you were there for. Was any of this worth it?

Well, the thing with Sif is that with the DLC, the game pretty much presents you the chance to save the doggo, and yoinks it away right in front of you. Astraea makes you think you are cruel. Sif shows that it's the game.

He fights you because he doesn't want you to be corrupted by the Abyss like Artorias. We know that this doesn't happen because you walk out the abyss unharmed after the 4 kings are slain. One of, if not my favourite boss fight of all time. This track conveys the emotions of the scene perfectly; a sense of dark foreboding clashing with a serene and pure beauty, with a strong dash of peril for the player, Garl, Astraea and the people of swamp as it hammers home that sense of absolute desperation. I think it also invokes how the player feels about themselves, knowing that defeating Astraea is probably the only thing you can do to save the world but everything about it feels terribly wrong, as if you're the villain in their story, which you are. Absolutely wonderful, depressing, bleak and it is the soul of Demon's Souls to me.

Astraea and Garl Vinland, truly a great boss fight. Up to that point all of the demons you fought were these monsters and when you finally make it to the end all you see are two humans. At that moment you realize it's not the physical appearance, no it is the actions one takes with that power that truly makes one a demon. This fight also shows how good intentions can ultimately do great evil. Still doesn't make the fight easier though, morally speaking.

Well, if Astraea would be let alive, the Old One couldn't be stopped and the world would get shrouded by the Fog and overtaken by demons. Astraea can be a good hearted person, but she stills a servant of the Old One, she knows what would happen to the world. Maybe, she didn't care about it, cause she was delusioned. You're in a quest to save a world that is in the brink of extinction, surely you are not the worst demon. Besides, I think Astraea could have learned the soul arts, she surely could help by using it, instead of becoming an archdemon. It seems to me that, delusioned because she thinks that god abandoned them or doesn't exist, she just don't care to what will happen in some time.

If the Slayer of Demons never existed, if they died somewhere along the way, or even if they succeeded, but chose the evil ending, then everything Astraea did was totally right. She looked at a war against the demons that was effectively lost, and decided to spend the world's last days on helping the most unfortunate people of even the old world. It is only in the timelines where the Slayer of Demons succeeds and reaches the good ending that she's wrong, and would have been better off making it to the Nexus or the like. This is not that different in any real war where you have to choose sides before you know how it ends up. You can end up helping quite a lot people, especially if you are a medic like her, but you risk getting ground underfoot if you choose wrong and end up as an obstacle to one of the victorious side's heroes.

This sounds like something out of an old Ace Attorney game somehow. Maybe it's the soundfont or the way it was arranged. Nevertheless, whenever I listen to Maiden Astraea's theme I always end up imagining Wright cross-examining a witness or facing a counter-productive plot twist. I guess that's part of something only the Demon's Souls OST seems to archieve: each song is amazing, yet so different from the rest.

@@alexandreleguen8952 I will explain to you. The enemies redesign, instead of something of From Software, looks like come out of Warcraft, Final Fantasy or Balder's Gate. The music of the original is special and unique is very ways, the rescore in the remake is almost unrecognizable, and is too epic for the tone of the original, who the ost is almost for a horror game (check the Flamelurker's theme of the original and the remake and compare them). And of course, when Bluepoint recreat the areas they are thinking more on "tessellation is missing, polygons are missing, more more motion blur, this need more global illumination, more particles and flassy effects, god rays are missing" etc.. instead of really compromise to care the atmosphere of the original.

@@joshuawiener5003 it was hardly a remake. All they did was add 5-ish armor sets and redo the music and voice lines. They got rid of the ability to delete saves and they still haven’t fixed the lingering hitboxes from the exploding barrels in boletaria. They didn’t even patch the talisman of beasts + curse weapon glitch. The only thing they did fix was the stockpile Thomas dupe.

my first experience playing this game... I just fell in love with the atmosphere. I loved how it changed with every area, and the gravity changed as you advanced in each respective area... but this area specifically. To find the maiden here, and Garl Vinland defending her to the death. You truly do feel like a Demon when you come here for your precious Demon's Soul.

Dylan S So within the story Lady Astraea and Garl Vinland venture into the fog to ease the pain that the wretched/unfortunate have faced within the Valley of Defilment. When they arrived they realized that the valley was even worse then they had anticipated. Babies being sacrificed and others killed off by their own or even worse-the plague that infests the valley. No matter how hard the fair Maiden tried her miracles were not enough to ease the pain and reserve the damage that had been done. In amidst all of that somewhere within the lore she comes to the realization that “God” is actually the “Old One” (Which is true) not only being the source of soul arts but also the catalyst to miracles themselves. She then would sacrifice her humanity and soul to “gain the power beyond human imagination” in order to make her miracles beyond what her mortal abilities could ever achieve. Around this time is when we enter as the Demon Hunter. We kill her bodyguard (Garl) which also happens to be her lover and ultimately acquire her “Pure” Demon soul at the end of the boss fight. No demon can be “pure” yet she remains as such. Despite her actions she always stayed true to helping those of the Valley of Defilment and her dedication towards her faith and her morality is what continued to prove her purity. Which leads us to reflect upon ourselves at the end of the fight if we the Demon Hunter even have any humanity at all or have we possibly already have become so monstrous and lustful for souls that we have become a product just as vile as the demons themselves. It's not a huge ringing choir like the other boss fights. It's long, high, weeping strings and a constant harpsichord that runs in circles, and then a couple of higher sharp strings like gasping for air. JESUS this is so pretty oh my god. that's heartbreaking. I think the remake failed to capture the tragedy of the original.

Nah, there is no way to remake these two games "right". Both games are flawed masterpieces with something missing due to schedule. If you don't make any change, you are lazy and cash lust, if you add too much, you destoryed the original feelings of these games. A HD legendary collection of all souls games would be more reasonable.

Astraea was my final boss before the ending, simply because I went through the archstones in order. Her fight was the culmination of the "corruption" of my character, their becoming a real Demon after all the killing. Needless to say, it was a perfect setting for a certain ending...

I love this theme more than any other. it just fits the boss so perfectly, better than any other boss in any other game. and the boss itself.... its really hard not to feel bad about yourself. god I love this game.
