*The real threat is Garl Vinland. If you kill him without attacking Maiden Astraea, she will suicide when you speak to her. You can see how I fight him in the narrow choke point. It makes it difficult for him to swing the Bramd. Usually it does a ton of damage if it connects, but I suppose the narrowness of the ledge made it lack full power when it hit me.

I don't see anything tragic about either of them. They became disillusioned with their original mission and fell into despair, then became false idols for the people of the valley. Astraea offers no real help to them, other than a false comfort. There is nothing humble about her, just another demon accepting the souls that are offered to her. She's letting the people of the valley slaughter intruders in her name. Definitely the most vile of the demons. And then she has the audacity to act as if you are the bad guy for wanting her dead, as if she's in the right at all.

Well, the Valley of Defilement represents the disgusting side of humanity, or humanity's deep wound.Everything no one wanted,things that wanted to be forgotten, and things that no one wanted to deal with were shoved in there.Like sick and I think elderly people.Also I pretty sure it mentions that aborted fetuses were thrown down there, something like that.Most likely shit and sewage were also most likely dumped there.Anyway, astraea and garl became disillusioned with their mission because they thought, "What kind of god would let this happen."So she decided to help(I'm certain that she revived those aborted babies in her boss room, which means she most likely helped the others too)the people, attempt to heal the "wound".No one gave a shit about those people but her and garl(maybe garl),which gave the denizens purpose, something which I'm pretty sure they didn't have.Also about the denizens killing people, they most likely hated people in general because well, the people put them their in the first place.Also maybe she needed more souls so she could perform stronger miracles.I don't know about garl, but from his dialogue it seems like he thinks the same way.I think it's sad because she was trying to do something noble, but since she has a demon soul you have to kill her to ultimately stop the fog from spreading.Sorry for the essay but I just wanted to tell you why I think its tragic.

I think you misunderstood Astraea and Vinland's intentions. Astraea is not a demon. Well, at least she wasn't one before she arrived at Valley of Defilement. Her objective was to get rid of the filth there and give the inhabitants actual comfort, Vinland's goal was to protect Astraea with his life. But filth in the Valley took over her and Vinland before they could complete their tasks, and ironically, considering her goal when she arrived at the valley, Astraea became the source of the filth, a demon. Therefore it was left to you to kill Astraea and stop the filth. So I would say this is tragic for all three people: Vinland, Astraea and you.

This is easily the greatest and most brilliant sequence in all of the Souls games, including Bloodborne. This was that one moment where From Software had the balls to unceremoniously crush any false sense of adventure, glory, and valiant heroics the player may have been feeling by revealing to them that they are a total asshole and are really no more noble or honorable than any of the savage monsters they have slaughtered. Boletaria is a dark, wretched, and miserable place to exist in, and From Software figured out the perfect way to drive that point home with this "boss fight".

You can tell how tired of all of it Garl and Astraea are. I mean, they're sitting in a bloody swamp. Garl's wearing heavy equipment, yet he treads through it. This is hardly a boss fight so much as it is an unexpected turn of events.

I mean I feel like I'm the bad guy killing her knight and forcing her to off herself... then I look at those depraved worshipers and piles of empty armor that surely had bodies in them and I know: That woman is the darkest thing there. Even her boss theme is ominous...

+clevelandtyler2 Sadly, her existence alone helps to expand the fog into the outside world, threatening them with demons. Plus, even if her intentions were good, what was the outcome? The aborted babies were brought back to life only to become morbid creatures in a deep swamp most people would probably die on before they got a chance to love them. The inhabitants, in their worshipping of Astraea as their saviour, hunt down and murder adventurers, knights and many more solely to get their souls and give them to Astraea, increasing her power. Although their intentions are good, the outcomes are terrible! Specially for the people who were sent there simply to find out what happened to Astraea and Garl. Imagina if Garl Vinland's sister had been killed and her soul offered to Astraea? As for her, she may not even approve of such methods, but she's clearly not doing anything to stop her followers. In a way, she has partially been corrupted by the Demon's Soul, accepting horrible things to happen to others in order to acquire more souls. While her intetions are to help the poor and depraved of the Valley, she's actually just feeding the Old One with more souls without realising it. Maybe being too blind to accept that. As for Garl Vinland... his example is the same as Velstadt's. His blind loyalty, although beautiful, has made him turn an eye about what happen to outsiders. Maybe he even starts to distort facts in his own mind, maybe even Astraea do. I mean, many knights and even his sister were sent to find him, yet he claims they were abandoned long ago. He no longer has a grasp of the true reality of things, just like his saint. It's sad, it's unfair, but for the greater good (or evil, depending on your choices), she had to die. And if Garl Vinland will give us no choice but to fight, than sadly he too must die. It's painful, but it must be done.

Been a gamer for 25 years now, and I can say that this short scene is one of my all-time gaming highlights. Simple, but incredibly powerful dialogue with a lot of implications. Terrific voice-acting. Haunting, unconventional sountrack. Demons Souls is far from being a perfect game - Dark Souls is better in nearly every way - but this Scene... man, suddenly good and evil don´t seem to be so clearly divided after all. I absolutely love how you, the Player, after playing through a good part of the game, suddenly realize that maybe you are not the great hero you once thought. And this line... "Take your precious Demon Soul"... wow. Haunts me to this day. I felt downright dirty after completing this fight.

I'm a gamer for over 30 years but I didn't like them when they came out and only played them like 30-60 minutes back then. A few months ago I tried them again and finished both (starting with Demon's Souls) and I can say I like Demon's Souls much more than Dark Souls (1). I enjoyed Demon's Souls story, level and the whole atmosphere much more than Dark Souls 1. Demon's Souls just kept me motivated to the max unlike Dark Souls which had some areas and moments where I thought "Meh! Do I really have to do this / do I really have to go there?"

I love the fact that for most people,. this is the last boss you face before the end of the game, because of how difficult the world is. You put it off till last. Consequently, when you arrive and kill Maiden Astraea, the thoughts the fight instills in you lingers to the end of the game. It's like stepping through the last fog wall in Dark Souls, and hearing *and reading* "Lord of Cinder". But I think this fight is more subtle than that one. Still amazing though.

I really love the theme of "comfort in suffering", and this is one of the best executions. It's clear that Miyazaki loves it as well as it's also the theme of the Painted Worlds in Dark Souls. An empty cold world where the lost and the sinners go to find comfort in one another, they may even commit atrocities to protect this dark prison of comfort. It's a really grim theme and I still feel like Astrea and Garl are the perfect example of it because they're not as antagonistic as Sister Friede and Sir Vilhelm and we get to know them better than Priscilla.

True enough. And I can also understand that her intentions have been to help those abandoned by their parents and outcast in the swamp, but still; her biggest mistake was claiming the soul, as it was bound to her life and the MC is forced to kill her whether he/she wants to or not. I feel more sorry for Garl. Either he dies trying to protect the one person he in fact swore to at any cost, or he fails, and he becomes depressed.

Shoot, the absolute freedom to craft my character how I want keeps me going back to Lordran. Whenever I fight Garl Vinland he's always standing further up on the ledge. Weird seeing him nearer to Astraea.

I know; at the time I didn't know that Garl's magic defense was as high as it was. Later on I started using a Sharp War Scythe +5 with 50 Dexterity (same character) and it was doing a lot more damage.

Well I'm kinda at a plateau I can't get worse but I can't seem to get any better. Despite all my muscle memory and practice I'm still easily defeated by more veteran players. And there are enemies I can never seem to really overcome, the Skeledogs being my mortal enemies. So while I do agree that anyone can do it I do not agree that anyone could be GREAT at it. You're obviously a gem, you've played long enough and know all the tricks, so you're a master of Demon's Souls, don't doubt yourself

*high five* For me those moments are in Demon's Souls with True King Allant, Maiden Astraea and Garl, Dark Souls with Gwyn, R-Type Final stage F-A, and R-Type Delta in the final stage. Video games as art, with the emotional punch of the height of the medium.

Picking the valley of defilement before fighting king allant and then true king allant was the best choice I did in gaming this boss fight was stuck in my head along with the true ending of demon's souls. And then the credits music.. ugh, that freaking credits music made me feel so empty after finishing the game.

I've never seriously tried while recording. I've found it more efficient just to move back and hit him when he misses. Can you though? Absolutely. I've seen a few others pull it off well enough. Since all of my videos were taken from NG+25-40 (i.e. maxed difficulty), it wasn't worth it to me to risk death. =)

Well, you can tell that I follow with the Vinland legacy too - Dull Gold Armor? Yeah. Both of the Vinland armors look great in this game. And yes, I feel the same way about Demon's Souls. In my opinion, the best, and most important game of the PS3/X360 generation. When I'd heard that the servers were going down at the end of May 2012, I wanted to cry, and I am not an emotional person at all. (comment posted May 17, 2012)
