There's something about failed media formats that makes them seem more futuristic than what we actually have now: less "the world of tomorrow" and more "a reality that couldn't be." The auto-loading caddy system is pretty cool too. There's something mysterious about not being able to see the disc. I'm a sucker for complex loading mechanisms... until they break.

Not only is it era-appropriate, it was actually designed by RCA to be used with their videodisc player as the remote can control both the TV and the Player.

Hi good morning! What a great picture capacitance vinyl videos have. To think that in Argentina we have not had them, I estimate that in almost no part of the world. Still for some it was a tremendous failure due to the repeated furrow jumps ... the image is excellent in terms of chroma saturation, they have an image that rests the vision with exact colors (watercolor type) very cinematographic type. Can they still be found on the used market? I have also been able to observe the upper image of the Oriental VHD system. But unfortunately the records are all in Japanese, too bad they only made it for their market. I think that with an extension to 720p HD they would have been widely accepted today, because from what I have seen so far the image has a high resolution with respect to the quality of the chroma. Greetings and Blessings from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Nice demo. Love how you can clearly see the scanlines. My dad bought a little later version of this tv with the square corner picture tube. From when it was new, biggest pile. Had this issue where it would flip inputs rapidly, but it would only do it once in a while usually at inopportune times. I begged him to get the Sony at the time. The disc banding is more like chapters on a LaserDisc. Too bad you couldn't demonstrate it on this video. Unfortunately, not too many CED titles had that and, of course, a 400 series player was required to use such a feature. I know some of my newer movies from Paramount Home Video had disc banding, such as my copies of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Staying Alive," and "Flashdance". Some music video titles also had it, such as my copy of "Duran Duran."

Great video thanx Josh! Im hear in London, England, i have the stereo GEC Mc Michael(Hitachi) player with wired remote control. Iv replaced all the drive belts and the player is working ok. All the discs i have are second hand, i do tend to get a lot of groove skipping but the more i play the discs the better they get in that respect. My biggest worry is obtaining a replacement stylus, are they hard to get hold of? Apart from that the picture quality on my 49inch LCD PAL television is fairly good. I still manage to purchase new discs still in shrinkwrap from different areas of the U.K occasionally. I always take the discs out of their caddies and inspect them before playing. Its amazing how second hand discs often are covered in finger prints and scratches. Is there any safe way to clean a disc? You have a great set up there with your RCA equipment. We never got players with auto load hear in the U.K like you have. As far as i no the CED system was only on sale hear for about 6 months in 1983 and then scrapped. Thanx for everything. Regards Lee.

I had three different CED players plus hundreds of CED disc and the problem with CED discs was the skipping problem even with new discs.
@ketonicdude
@ketonicdude 3 жыл бұрын
They will skip because they were coated with a layer of silicone to protect them from the stylus. Over time that silicone has settled down in the grooves of the disc. When you play the disc the stylus struggles to push that silicone back up out of the grooves. If you play the disc again you'll notice the skipping is less and if you play through the disc a couple times it will stop completely. Just have to play them.
@danielj.glowny4108

When you get down to it the reason why RCA CED had a short life in the market as compared to Laserdisc is the damn skipping period.
@ketonicdude
@ketonicdude 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielj.glowny4108 I'm sure it didn't help matters but the actual reason it flopped was because you couldn't record on it. It was released in competition with VHS. At that time a movie on VHS was around $80 to $100. When CED came out a movie was around $20 to $30. So you could get 4 or 5 movies for the same price as one VHS movie. But you couldn't record on it and people didn't want to have to have a VCR to record their shows and a CED player to watch movies.

@@ketonicdude Both RCA CED and Laserdisc were never competition with either Beta or VHS even thought many people believed this.The two Disc systems were designed to sell movies for home use,while Beta and VHS were designed to record TV programs to watch later.Laserdisc lasted 22 years till DVD took over Movies for home use.RCA CED lasted only a few years when VHS Movies came out in rental and later when Movies On Tape were a lot cheaper.The failure of CED killed RCA VICTOR and was sold to G.E. who sold off the various divisions

Yes that would be true, people do that with DVD as well, or LD. Technically RCA called their CED system, RCA Selectavision Videodisc, so you should really be calling it a Selectavision disc. Capacitance is just the technology that it utilized. And actually when you say the acronym for CED you say Capacitance Electronic Disc System so really it should be a CEDS, but technicalities. lol

@ketonicdude
@ketonicdude 3 жыл бұрын
Couple of things. The discs were coated with silicone to protect them from stylus wear. Over time that silicone has settled down into the grooves of the discs. Then when you play them the stylus has to force that silicone back out of the grooves resulting in skipping. If you play the disc a few times through the skipping will go away. But since these are grooved PVC discs, if they were stacked for a long period of time, the weight of the discs will have crushed the grooves in the center. So if they play great at the beginning and then skip a lot 15 to 20 minutes in, then most likely they were stacked and the discs are ruined. There is no solution to cure this unfortunately.

Cool. A vinyl like technology that plays videos and sounds. Is that analog or it's still digital like a laser disc? It's probably more durable like vinyl is to cds. God bless, Proverbs 31
@ketonicdude
@ketonicdude 5 жыл бұрын
Actually it is Analog, and so is Laserdisc. Laserdisc did have digital audio towards the end but the picture was always analog. CED's are actually very fragile, they are composed of PVC rather than Vinyl like a record so they are prone to break a little easier and they have 40 grooves for every 1 groove in a record so the surface of the disc is very susceptible to stacking or oils from your fingers. Thats why they must be housed in the caddy. But none the less it is a very neat format. Thanks for watching.

Wow you've got quite the CED collection there! I'm surprised so many movies were released on the format. I really can't see the reason to buy one back in the day. If you were interested in something like this it seems like you would just buy a Laserdisc over a CED. Laserdiscs were played via a laser so nothing was ever physically touching the disc therefore it wouldn't wear out and could be played basically an infinite amount of times and the 10,000th play would look just as good as the 1st time it was played (not counting laser rot) CED however were played with a stylus which over time would cause wear to the disc and make it more prone to skipping and degradation of the video/audio quality. Not only that but it was more of a hassle to own a CED as you would have also eventually replace the stylus in the player. I don't know I just don't see why back in the 80s a person would choose CED over Laserdisc. It is kind of amazing they even bothered to release it. It was obsolete from day 1. Had the CED came out 5+ years before Laserdisc I could understand it's purpose more but by the time it was finally released it really had no reason to exist. With all that said I still think it is a neat format to collect for. I've seen CED discs for sale a few times at local flea markets and even own Wargames on CED just because I really like that movie. But in all my years of going to thrift stores and flea markets I've not once come across a CED player. If I ever saw one for cheap I'd certainly buy it and see if my Wargames disc is playable.

While Laserdisc were a better idea,the price difference was great between a laserdisc player $600.and up compared to CED players at $150.and up.Laserdiscs at $30. to well over $100.CED discs at $20.to $40.Also the selection of CED disc were greater that Laserdisc at the same time,because laserdisc were on the market over 20 years the number of titles surpassed that of CED which only lasted a few years.
