Those kids are as old as I am. I love how the video jumped near the end. A perfect preview of what you'd get with videodiscs after they wear.

When the kid put the disc in the player, and it came back out and she put it away, I got the impression that the player was malfunctioning and she was like "Screw it, the player's not working, I give up". They could have at least shown a brief segment of the cartoon she was trying to watch. Very poorly done.
@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism
@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism 3 жыл бұрын
@@plateshutoverlock I guess you didn't have one of these players. You insert the case into the machine, the player unclips the disc inside, sends the empty case back at at you. One side only holds like 45 mins, so half way through a movie, you would get up, put the case back in, let it install it into the case again. Then insert side two. Many movies required 2 discs of course, to fit the whole movie. If they were close enough in length, they might slightly speed up the movie, so they didn't make a two disc set haha. Though, that wasn't the norm.

Towards the end when mom gives the little girl her cartoon disc to put in (4:32), you'll start seeing the characteristic slip-skip that all CED discs seemed to develop over time. Every single one of my discs would start doing that sooner or later. And once a disc started doing it, the skip would get worse and worse, jumping around more and for longer, each time you played the disc. It's really what killed CED for me. But tape had it's issues too. None of those early formats were foolproof.

I've never seen or heard of these. Was that skip at the end done by the KZbin uploader? I can't imagine the promotional video would want to have the skipping. 😜
@TaijanDean
@TaijanDean Жыл бұрын
@@Facial_Leather Li every single disc ever made for the format suffered from potential skipping issues, even the promotional ones. It’s all down to how the format works. It’s essentially a 12 inch vinyl record with grooves around 250 times smaller than a conventional audio record, read by a stylus that measured the capacitance of the disc as it spun. Just like normal records, with several plays and a worn stylus, skipping can become more of a problem over time regardless of the type of the disc played. Sealed discs tend to be less prone to this problem but most do wear overtime. I got my first player just over a week ago, spares and repairs and got it working last week. I’ve watched 1 film so far and out of the entire 95 minute runtime, only once did it skip badly and only for about 20-30 seconds. The rest played pretty well, all things considered. I could tell the previous owner of the disc hadn’t bothered to play the second half of the disc as side 2 played perfectly, almost like new with no skips or dodgy frames at all. But yeah, the format doesn’t help itself as far as eventual wear and tear goes.
@Facial_Leather

@pvx The first laserdiscs released in 1978-79 retailed for around $15, but most of them were defective so MCA lost money on each title sold after replacing them. They turned out to be more expensive to manufacture than they thought, so they were priced closer to $40 during their peak. There should be a parody of this disc showing all the DVD titles that can now be found for $5. You may have noticed the Dumbo trailer on the Snow White Blu-Ray- it mysteriously hasn't come out, but it's on CED!

We were the most popular stay at homes in town . . . that is, until the Jones family across the street got cable, a big screen projection TV and a VHS player. Meanwhile we’re stuck with a CED player with discs that don’t play well at all because our fifth needle stylus for the player wore out, and the movies skip, stutter and repeat again and again.

I first heard of this on youtube when i typed in laserdisc. It lasted a few years when it debuted in 1981 and became the first video failure ever joining the ranks of Betamax and HD DVD. They are highly collectible especially music CEDs such as rock concert movies. Not only that but earlier discs were of poor transfers and mono and crappy stereo quality and prone to damage more than laserdisc. No wonder why Return of the Jedi didn't come out on CED and debuted on laserdisc and vhs in 1986.
@databits

***** Return of the Jedi is available on CED. They were not "prone to damage" unless you threw the caddies across the room. They were a poorer system than Laserdisc but have a charm all their own. Happy collecting!
