I quite like seeing your behind the scenes stuff. As someone who loves to whistle along to music and even bop along with it in the car (and even sing when nobody else is on the road, and have done so with one of your songs, even!), seeing how someone does that with ten-plus of himself is fascinating and even kind of inspiring. Looking forward to your next works!

Maybe it's just the barbershoppy feel that acapella inherently carries, but this song gave me a massive deja vu to Billy Joel's 'For The Longest Time.' Which is inherently awesome.

Hey Dave, you've probably heard this before, but you probably have "pitch recognition," or, as it's often called, perfect pitch. Also, you have a high level of audiation (the ability to hear something in your head and produce it with your voice). If you haven't been trained in music, then you have a gift, friend! I've been a fan since "Not Roy's" and I love all of your work. Keep it up! :-)

It's okay. I was just making a joke. I'm just happy to have been a part of this magical experience. i.e. getting a reply from brentalfloss on a video that's not even his. That's even cooler than just getting a regular ole' reply from one of your normal vids :)

Thanks! I hardly have any actual musical education though, just a couple of years of piano lessons when I was a kid that didn't go anywhere. I've always just been interested, I suppose. I'll be doing a video soon about good kids' records I grew up with, and then after that I used to play with keyboards, Protracker on the Amiga, midis at the end of the 90s, just tinkering here and there. Almost all my skills at doing these I learned while doing these, including how to sing.

Good question. Generally speaking, unless you're a master vocalist, the accuracy of the notes you hit will decrease the faster you sing. It's just how voices work, the notes will slide into one another and it can sound ugly. If it was done by someone who can separate their notes out rapidly (or if you don't mind it being heavily edited) then yeah, just about anything could work a cappella.
@Crabmaster10012 жыл бұрын
I'd love to hear your version jut A cappella or your original nostalgic to the game lyrics! Well, we did write lines for each other here and there, but sometimes we came up with more than one option and then talked about which would fit together best. You know, I've always wondered how two people write one thing together, and now I've done it, it's actually hard to explain, because there's a point where suddenly it's something you've both made, instead of two halves. We were both suggesting changes and improvements on each other's lines, so by the end we really had written it together.

Depends. I'm guessing really good mics going through a really good setup don't experience latency, or compensate for it. My mic sometimes does and sometimes doesn't. Sometimes it thinks it did, didn't, compensates, and the line ends up playing too soon instead of too late. So yeah, sometimes I do have to shift the lines. Interestingly, this wasn't a problem back when I was using Garageband. Either that or I wasn't good enough at it back then to notice.

It's tricky to answer that. It took weeks and weeks, but we could only get little bits done each week. I had a very busy schedule making comics (you'll see them soon), Brent was travelling around doing all sorts of exciting things, and there's a terrible timezone problem that means when one of us is wide awake and ready to work, it's the middle of the night for the other one. I can't really tell how long the project actually took, if you see what I mean.

Super Mario Land by Ambassadors of Funk. It was out in '92 or '93, something like that. Same time as Tetris by Doctor Spin and Supersonic by H.W.A. Those tunes weren't even retro back then! Go and check them all out on KZbin, I bought 'em all and I'd do it again!

The notes which a bass plays? Or some sort of low instrument that plays the low bass notes so a song sounds more full and not too bright. It's very important because..hmm because yeah I can't really explain it either other than it caries the song on and makes the changes from chords better and, yeahxD
@bepis_real12 жыл бұрын
I'd love the instrumental version too please. I only wish I can do this...I can sing, but I don't excatly have the lungs of a singer for chords and a bass. This actually interests me greatly... How do you compensate for mic latency? I've only tried self- a capella (how dirty!) a few times, and have either had to shift the lines between takes in order to build live chords like you showed, or just record each line listening to the click track and not the other lines so they all end up delayed the same amount and match in full playback.
