I love your channel so much! My mother bought me my first orchid, which was a mini phalaenopsis. I usually grow regular house plants and succulents. However, after finding your channel and learning so much about orchids, they have become my favorite plant. My collection started in April, and I now have 3 mini phalaenopsis, 8 phalaenopsis, 3 oncidiums, 3 cattleyas, 2 dendrobiums, and 1 vanda. Every question I have, you have a video on it, and I love that! You have helped grow my passion for orchids! Please keep making videos; I have learned so much from them!!!

My favourite orchids are still Phalaenopsis. The flowers last quite some time, at least 3 months and my orchids usually bloom twice a year (and this is because of your channel that helped me understand orchid needs). I own about 15. The only other orchid I am interested in is a jewel orchid and I am on a constant hunt for one.

I live in the tropics and have been watching your channel for 2+ years as i started my orchid collection, i learned a lot here and my orchids thrived, but no blooms, one advice you keep saying about how the climate plays part in orchid care that i finally dared to heed, 3 months ago I ditched the bark chips and spag moss and perforated plastic containers and put all my orchids in chopped coconut husk in clay pots and prayed for forgiveness should they not survive the change :) . Now I have flower spikes and sheaths popping out all over, I water fearlessly twice a week and they love it. You're a good teacher Danny, thank you.

Hi Danny! I have really gotten into your channel recently; as someone who has grown houseplants for the past 6+yrs, I (like many others) assumed that "orchids" were complex hybrid phalenopsis only. Learning about orchids has been so rewarding, I now have 2 Oncidiums, 1 Brassia, 2 Phals & a Dendrobium Nobile! I may have become obsessed! 😅 You have reignited my passion for houseplants and I just wanted to say thank you for being such a beacon of orchid wisdom to help me demistify orchids!

Great video! In the USA, orchid bark can be found just about anywhere, grocery stores, home improvement stores, and big “everything” stores all have orchid bark and some have sphagnum moss. Then again most of those stores are also selling phals too. Funny, there is a gigantic grocery store in my city that has more orchid types than the nursery I went to, mini and reg phals, paphs, cymbidiums, and I bought my Aliceara there too, at a grocery store...

I remember one conversation that I had with a physician colleague after they found out about my hobby. They compared growing a phalaenopsis with medical school- they feel that caring and maintaining orchids is more difficult than the intense high volume classes that they experienced!! There is such a huge misconception about growing orchids. The multiple misconceptions that you reviewed in this absolutely incredible video have resulted in the tendency to stay away from orchids unfortunately. I subsequently helped them re-bloom a phalaenopsis and now they’re hooked!! Thank you Danny for such a complete, accessible description of the numerous thought errors that people have! I will be recommending this video without a doubt. Keep up the amazing job!, Btw I really loved the added touches in your grow space. The beautiful pots, the stands, etc certainly allow us to enjoy orchids regardless of whether they’re in bloom or not. 👍🌺😄

The two hobbies do go very well together, I have to admit. I already had extra sphagnum moss lying about because I use it in my boa's terrarium to keep up his humidity, so that's been quite convenient for me with my orchids. And once I have a reptile room it'll most likely double as a plant room as well, considering the climate will work out nicely for both. Nice to see more reptile keepers who also grow orchids!

Hi Danny!! I love watching your videos!!! I LOVE Orchids!! I always have. But I have never managed to keep one alive. Well until recently. But the one I bought almost a year ago and over wintered is a ground orchid so not sure if You would count that one. But it is waking back up. So YaY!!! I also had luck keeping a Phalaenopsis orchid alive for over a month or two at least now that I have grow lights, but mice found and killed it before I knew what happened. It is so bad that when my husband stops at big box stores and looks at clearance plants he may say all they had was the one you Kill. Cause he forgets they are called orchids. But I recently bought a new one. Just last Friday. And am going to watch some more of your videos and see if I can keep this beautiful plant alive. I now have some orchids added to my plant wish list IF I can prove to myself that I can keep this $5.00 orchid alive. But I am having trouble finding out the names of some of them. One is I believe you said is a type of slipper orchid a Paphiopedilum I think is what you called it around time stamp 5:03. The other one is a beautiful purple/yellow blooms at time stamp 17:39. I would love the ID so I can look up the prices and availablity of these so if I start keeping these marked down ones alive I can expand and get more expensive ones. When I try googling them I mainly see just pics of Slipper orchid blooms only and most are seeds or just pics of the plant for sale. Not actual plants for sale. Thank you!! And thank you for helping us all try and keep these beautiful plants alive!!!

You are very lucky girl. I love paph. and phals. If I order orchid from mainland, the orchid is stressed or dead before reaching my place, because the shipping here is very slow it takes 20-60 days from mainland to our place. I got into orchids a few years ago and spent a lot of money on buying them ( I don’t have any nurseries in my area either). I have pretty much killed every one of them or have not gotten them to rebloom. I bought some dendrobiums I happened to find at a big box store about 4 years ago and none have bloomed for me. I have 2 catasetum and 1 in struggling and the other hasn’t rebloomed either. I have a cattleya that has rebloomed once with one flower since I bought it. I am a sucker and keep trying but... I have spent a small fortune on paphiopedilums and killed them all. I even bought a maxillaria tenuifolia because many have said how easy they are (mine is barely hanging on and probably won’t make it). I live where it gets cold in the winter and thought maybe a miltoniopsis would do well for me since my house is chilly in the winter (both died very quickly). I have over 200 houseplants and have killed very few and most of them are much cheaper.

Regarding the Phals, I personally think that there are some interesting species, that also have mottled beautiful leaves. I can't stop looking at my stuartiana for example. I think the gigantea I have has different but interesting leaves as well. And the glossy shine on my bellinas leaves is pretty, too. But it is a personal preference. You are right that some Paphs leaves are out of this world. Especially that Paph Vanda m pearman. At Schwerters (half an hour with the car away from my flat) they have him, too. Kinda want it, the flowers are so cute.

About the overwatering... I use only bark chips, and they seem to get mold very quickly if I don't let them thorougly dry out. I got ventilation holes and all.
@MissOrchidGirl4 жыл бұрын
Hi, some orchids can dry out without damage and you should let them dry, since it will keep the medium fresh for longer. Some orchids don't tolerate drought at all and they need to be kept moist at all times. Some setups (semi hydro) need to stay moist at all times. Here's my tutorial on mold outbreaks and how to fix them, good luck! kzbin.info/www/bejne/inrRi2WDfs2Ei6s ☺️
@rianmilit4 жыл бұрын
The ventilation might not be enough, I also get that, especially in winter, when my windows are closed, and I also have plenty of ventilation holes along the sides of pots. During spring-summer, since my windows are always open, sufficient air circulates and they dry out in time.

Interesting with the clay pot information. I've been operating under the theory, heard somewhere, that porous clay pots gave orchids a difficult time because the exposed clay wicked away the moisture from the roots and bark. It was recommended that if a clay pot is used it be glazed on the inside and outside. I do have a miniature phal that is doing ok, but is a big box store rescue plant, and I should replant it. My watering method is to soak the plant, in it's pot/medium for 20 minutes once a week. This seems successful as the second branch on an original spike is currently blooming and another pushed a spike for a second set of blooms this year. The other plants are creating leaves and roots. Are there multiple methods to success regarding this method?
