AMBER VALLEY PARISH #17: DENBY
Here’s a fun one. I dare bet a lot of you will have somewhere in your house, or in a relatives house, a teapot which was designed in this part of Derbyshire. Welcome to the parish of Denby, which lies between the villages of Codnor and Kilburn, directly South of the town of Ripley. This is a scattered community, not too dissimilar to others we’ll encounter soon elsewhere Amber Valley, but it has at least four main areas of settlement.
First of all, there’s Denby village, which has the school, the church and a massive memorial park to its most famous son, John Flamsteed, England’s first astronomer royal. Then there’s Denby Common, which has a pub and Denby Cricket Club. To the Southwest is an area known as Denby Bottles, which together with Kilburn’s Rawson Green area, forms an almost continuous semi urban sub village. Lastly, is Smithy Houses, which is an important area because it contains the John Flamsteed Community School. There are tiny bits of Ripley and Belper which - namely the Marehay and Openwoodgate areas - which fall within the boundaries as well.
Again its a former mining area, and had many collieries - the largest of these being Denby Drury Lowe, which was named after a local landowner. Part of his land is now occupied by the enormous Denby Pottery factory, famous for making those teapots and lots more tableware.

My stepmother used to live and work in Denby, and other jobs since then and finished at Denby again until retirement, and I come to Denby fairly regularly, as my Dad lives nearby and it's one of my favourite villages in Derbyshire and had some friends who went to John Flamsteed School as well. It's almost a second home to me, near to my Dad's place.

Hi Andy. The Astonomers Park is nice memorial to their famous son. Colliery played a big part in the villages history too. Pub stands out in early morning twilight. Colliery wheel is big..nice reminder of their industeral past. War memorial very respectful. Along with church. Pottery tea pot nothing like a cuppa from tea pot. I think older schools houses churches have more character. Great video. Thanks.

Bottle brook is named after the bottle shaped cavern under Denby Bottles. Which the miners from the Prospect Road colliery found 😊

Actually, I think the Denby parish might be one of the largest parishes in the country, geographically speaking. Sorry, good little video there. Lucky you didn't get flooded in. Denby was cut off recently by flooding. Ooh, also the band, The Levellers lived in one of those terraced houses on Derby Road, more or less, opposite the shop for donkeys years.
