Dendermonde - Hidden gem or boring town in Belgium? 🇧🇪

Since we have some time to spare, we decide to explore the town where our Airbnb is located: Dendermonde, also known as Termonde in French. We don't expect much of the city, because we had never heard of it and it's quite a small place. Are our expectations met or does Dendermonde end up surprising us? Watch to find out whether Termonde is a hidden gem or a boring town in Belgium!
One thing we notice quite quickly is that Dendermonde has quite some historical buildings - more than we expected. We also discover that the town has its own special national holiday: "Ros Beiaard", which has something to do with horses. What makes the event particularly special is that it only takes place once every ten years. We happen to be there close to the date of the most recent Ros Beiaard.
Our visit to the center of Dendermonde was quite a spontaneous decision... do we end up regretting it or rather enjoying it...?

Hmmm, as a citizen of Dendermonde, I need to point out some things. Dendermonde gets its name from the joining of two rivers, as you stated Dender and Schelde. The word 'monde' is an old word which means the mouth of a river, so where two rivers join. I live in Sint-Gillis myself, not far from that first church. Sint-Gillis is a municipality of Dendermonde. That church is called Sint-Egidius. The second church is in the center of Dendermonde. Actually, my late grandfather used to be a verger and organist there, he basically looked after the church. The third church is located on the Vlasmarkt. It's the Benedictine abbey. The building to the right is the former convent of the Black Sisters. Nowadays it's housing for elderly or less capable people. I beg to differ that Dendermonde is not a very important city, lol. Dendermonde is an administrative, commercial, educational, and medical centre for the surrounding region, and dattes back to before Medieval times. In fact, the Town Hall and the museum on the Grote Markt date back to the 12th and 13th century. Glad you enjoyed, thanks for your visit :)
