Denial happens because one is terrified to accept HATE. A society that teaches its member that one should always need love, want love, and only look for love creates weak minded individuals who fear hate and only live in their fantasies of a loving world, instead of opening his eyes to the bitter reality. I even saw one who was surrounded by people who hated him, yet he denied all the hatred and switched into his fantasies and perceived all his haters as his lovers. He actually looked at one of his hater who was frowing at him, and then smiled and started hugging and kissing him, and even believed his hater loves him. And when his hater got angry at this gay reaction to his hatred he punched the guy in denial so hard he fell to the ground. then few seconds later he got back up on his feet, dusted off his shirt and pants, and started walking away. I'm sure it was then for the first time that he started to belive *hate exists.*

Easier than saying she or he. Obviously, denial knows no gender since all of us can use any defenses.
