But he started growing after that and learning many lessons that will help him in the future and emotions he will forever cherish or try everything to forget. When Denji and Power took a bath, it was a time where she is really in some dark places. She gets terrifying nightmares that results in her screaming sleeping and awake and frequent panic attacks as she has a constant paranoia that the darkness devil is watching her. And Denji has to take care of her 24/7 because of it. And when the infamous bath scene came, Denji never really felt anything inappropriate or disgusting. He's just helping his friend or as i like to call it, helping his sister go through some tough times. Even when their bodies is literally embracing each other naked, he doesn't get horny or anything. He's even surprised about the fact that he doesn't feel anything about it. Sorry for the long rant that will probably just be meaningless in the end.

I think Fujimoto intentionally made it vague, weird, and complicated because honestly any relationship between Power, a corpse puppeted by a devil, and Denji, who is also functionally a zombie kept running by devil power, could never be anything else. Is it siblings? Is it romantic? Did Fujimoto write it this way because he has a weird siscon kink? The answer is probably somewhere in the middle except for the last one, that one is absolutely why it's like this, the man roleplays his own fake sister on twitter ffs.

I never considered them to be siblings, but rather two emotionally stunted people trying to figure out intimacy. Denji understands it conceptually, but becomes dissatisfied with his early experiences and believes only Makima can give him what he wants, thus causing him to stop thinking about Power as a potential partner. Power is still learning to socialize; by the bath scene, she is just beginning to comprehend intimacy; she offers Denji her blood - rather than her body - because it's what she most values. For her, intimacy is little more than desiring physical contact with someone she trusts; the rest is simply her body acting instinctually.

Yup... That Manga is the main example of how this author loves playing around with the concept of "Sibling-Lovers"... Spoiler. In that Manga MC came to love his sister as more than a sibling, but then she gets killed and the whole ordeal starts from there. Dude is so obsessed with his sister that the moment he meets a person who resembles her a lot he goes nuts... And when this person loses her memories, he puts her in the role of his sister just so he can be with her again... And yes. They f*ck. While the two of them are still believing they're siblings, they f*ck. Heck, the whole ordeal is a bloody mess that gets very complicated when bringing the idea of them not being blood related but still being siblings due to circumstances and yet ending up taking their feelings beyond what siblings should be... Just like Power and Denji here...

I think it's complicated and vague because Fujimoto himself isn't 100% sure where he wants to take the relationship even if they reunite in a future part of the story (with Power's memories gone). Fujimoto doesn't have every little thing planned out in the story. It's not 100% clear that it's romantic, and it's definitley not fully platonic either. I do get annoyed when people say "it's clearly 100% platonic" or "they're clearly the endgame romance." like no, shut up. Nothing about this is clear at all. Fujimoto can do whatever he wants with them, I'm just along with the ride.

I think that the main point of that scene was Denji slowly discovering that you can love some one (romantically) without lust. Sure, their relationship was platonic at that point, but Denji (for a very short time) experienced what true love for a person is, meaning that you like some one for who they are, not for how they look. If there was time to develop their relationship further, and Makima had not groomed Denji into always having her in mind, when experiencing sex and intimacy, I believe they would fall for each other in under a year.

What makes Denji and Power’s relationship so intriguing to me is how both of them are blind to the boundaries between them. All they truly know is that they’re close, but how close? It’s interesting that the story itself is unaware. All said story and us as the audience know is that their bond runs so deep they’d both defy an order from Makima. The Control Devil can’t overpower the love they have for one another. It’s genius how the very thing Makima established is what literally killed her. The symbol of Denji and Power’s bond in a chainsaw made of blood. Even more genius that it was an equal relationship, adding insult to Makima’s internal injury.

The build up to that scene is the context need for why people still sees them as a sibling relationship. Power is going to some tough times during it as she has an extreme level of ptsd after her meeting with the darkness devil. And Denji has to take care of her 24/7 because of that. Denji complains all the time when taking care of her and Power notices his annoyance. So she decided to give him in what she thinks will make him happy, blood. Because it what makes her happy. When she was questioned what would she like to have as a reward as part to her mission she asks to be able to suck a human blood until they die. Of course, Denji denied it as he doesn't like blood and Power took that as he hates her. Denji then took the offer to calm her down and proceed to do it. There were no romantic intention, no horniness, he was just doing it to calm her down and to prove he doesn't hate her. Even their conversation during when Power offers her blood is very reminiscent of sibling banters.

I feel like people read what Makima said as ironclad proof that they have a sibling relationship. When Makima told Denji he made Aki his older brother and power his "bratty little sister", lots of people prolly took that as "confirmation" that Power and Denji were only siblings and that's it. But Makimas words aren't always true, she was wrong about lots of things, and her master plan to ruin Denji? It's ultimately what defeated her. Then there is also some interview people mention with fujimoto, but I literally cannot find any article or interview talking about how he said he wanted Denji and Power to be siblings only.. Regardless if it was platonic or romantic, Power was taken away from Denji too soon. They deserved to live together for much longer and find their true meaning of love. There was for sure something unraveling within them, it was just crushed before it was complete.

Personally, I think Power is probably the best romantic partner for Denji, it's also just as possible that for thematic reasons, they'll never be a legitimate item. See, when Denji sucks Power's blood, bathes with her, etc.... and is somewhat confused as to how unstimulating the experience is, it's because Denji is a miserable, broken person who can't even comprehend being in a healthy relationship. Denji is an abuse-seeker, constantly chasing tail and allowing himself to be manipulated by characters because, well, he's miserable and suffers from a very traumatic past that has annihilated his self-esteem. Denji is a literal dog chasing the ambulance, he loves the chase of an ideal, but doesn't believe he deserves it. Instead, he loves the chase for the suffering that he receives from this moronic, reckless pursuit of fame and pleasure. The one time he actually got what he wanted, someone who was willing to rely on him and provide for him in a selfless manner. . . well, that just doesn't compute. Even if him and power could be a legitimately healthy relationship.... that's not what Denji wants, or even believes is possible for someone like him. And that's exactly why he "doesn't know" why he turned down Makima's offer and chose to stay with Power and Aki. He's lost in his pit of self-loathing he can't understand why he would choose something healthy over something abusive. Not sure if anything will ever happen from it, though. Denji seems to be such a paragon of self-loathing and self-destruction, I don't think he'll be able to break free of his desire to chase things. But those are my thoughts.

Just like Denji wanting to live a normal life, or to get fulfilled, or to find love, it’s never going to happen because thematically, he is always stuck in this need to *chase* something. Which is why Kobeni shattering his reality by revealing that, as a matter of fact, he had achieved his dream of normalcy, this entire time. That he had what he had always wanted…. And what does Denji do? Immediately find another wild and reckless goal, wants to have 10 girlfriends, steak every morning Power’s relationship with Denji - in the end, there was no chase. The question is- can Denji change? Well, even Power could for Denji: Himeno changed for Aki. Aki changed, partly for Himeno, but also because of Denji and Power. People matter to others, and Denji is no different. He has changed, bit by bit. Will it ever be enough for Denji to seriously consider the concept of romance? This has yet to be seen. But Denji’s endless pursuit is also his noble trait. It allowed him to overcome Makima, and see the error in her ways. The struggle means crappy movies will be produced, yes, but it is that struggle that is denji’s life. It is that trial and error that defines him.

Denji x Power indeed can work out beautifully, greatly backed up with that "no-chase" romance. Still for now though, i would still believe that denji and power are being portrayed as siblings. Simply put: Story for now - they're siblings One good Route - as lovers For me, i just need to wait for fujimoto to make clear about their relationship, personally it just wholesome for me to see them as very close siblings. Bathing together and stuff, everybody is so concerned about that interaction but bathing as family also protrays closeness and no awkwardness to each other, it is not new. Many anime/manga applies that interaction. She chose to stay with power because he cares for his sister, his family more than his own desire to be happy on his own. Seriously, anyone would else you'll be hunted with guilt. He stayed not because of realization he was tired of chasing, if only power was alright he would come see with makima. But family comes first. And knowing the author, i think he's trying to put a curse to his main character. Denji afterall won't ever get the things he want, even if he seemingly does, it will always end up on a disaster or accident, denji is designed to not experience real happiness.

Power sacrificed herself for him and Denji also put her over his personal wants, which makes her unique since every other woman in the manga wanted to use him in some way. Power is the only one who reached a level of selfless love with him.

I think Fujimoto leaves that scene up to your interpretation: -On the one hand, it could be stone cold foreshadowing of what is to come down the road -On the other hand, it could be a tongue-in-cheek timing gag; complete with Denji giving Power the frowny face and eating the flowers. I agree with OP though, their relationship isn't purely platonic. Denji might see Power as a little sister now (but that might be different after Ch. 91) but Power has stronger feelings, but hasn't can't verbalize them.

I feel like with denji and power, it's lessening their relationship to call them "romantic", "platonic", or "sibling". Their love can't be put into any of these categories, because their love is ALL of it. It's romantic, but not in an erotic sense. denji and power are not going to want to get married, have actual sex, or have kids. Romantic elements without any feelings of passionate romance. It's platonic, they support each other as equals, and have fun together as friends. But they can't be platonic, it's MORE than that. Siblings are a close interpretation of their relationship at face value, and I truly believe they think of each other as family. But it's too intimate to be siblings, yes? That's the thing, Power not being sexy/horny inducing to Denji is really important to their relationship, it means he isn't ATTRACTED to her. It's almost like he's taking a bath with himself. Because they're each other's Significant Other, but not in a romantic way? if you understand me. They have hints of romance and blushes in each other's heart, but I feel like it's just love instead of romance. the love you feel when your friend does something nice, the love when your child says something silly, the love when your spouse smiles in a pretty way. It's love for everything. The playfulness and dynamic of siblings, the (almost) intimacy of lovers, and the camaraderie of friends. it's beautiful. Their relationship is incredible because while Power's the only woman who wants DENJI and not the chainsaw man, it's not in a romantic, ship-y way either. It's real, raw love in its purest form. Comfortable with each other, happy together, understanding of each other, etc. It's just love. And it's so fun to see. It's like their souls are puzzle pieces that perfectly fit together. The way I saw it was Makima was a childhood crush. At the time Denji was peak immaturity and completely idolized this older woman that came into his life and showed him kindness when he needed it most. Reze was hormonal teenage puppy love. A whirlwind romance driven by lust with two equally inexperienced young people who just wanna fuck. And power had the potential to be a proper adult slow burn relationship where they connected on a sincere level. Had the been more mature, or had longer to grow together it could have easily been a serious long term situation. Unfortunately they were both still childish broken individuals and Tatsuki’s an asshole who had to suddenly murder half the cast in one volume. Still don’t know where Kobeni plays into anything though.

She was ready to leave Tokyo and Japan, but then turned away from the station, and was going back to the cafeteria to meet Denji. And her last words were "Truth is I never went to school either"- she really did want to spend time with Denji in a meaningful way, they did share a real connection. Only after Denji's hesitation did she go back to the original plan. She was conflicted between the mission and the fact that she did like the guy. She just said those things about an act as cope, half truth is easier than lies so she just told him it was all for a mission- partly trying last time to convince herself of that and for neither of them to regret they didn't run away. I haven’t watched this video yet but I watched the other ones leading up to it but something I couldn’t help but notice both in the anime and manga is that Denji’s infatuation with Makima is just that, a fruitless crush. Makima knows this. She gives Denji what he wants to string him along, but Power gives Denji what he needs. They form a genuine relationship though shared experiences, they both grow together. They go out(on missions), they are compassionate towards one another etc etc. When Power was traumatized, Denji helped her through it. He didn’t find it sexy or hot because his mind wasn’t firing like a hormonal teen’s, it was firing like a genuine person who loves and cares for another(like bro, who would confront someone they like after a traumatic experience and be like “mmmmm this is so hawt🥵”) In short: Makima is the fantasy of a perfect love, but Power is the realistic and grounded version of love that takes time and isn’t perfect, but in the end is perfect, despite the flaws.

Stuck in a similar relationship dynamic. Not going in depth about my personal life. I can confirm that there is such a thing as the love that Denji and Power share. "Love" is a powerful word. In japanese culture, the concept of love, and word itself is so strangely and rarely used, due to how much weight it carries. Love can take many different forms. And that is something people lack to understand a lot of times. There is love for family, friends, food, games, lovers, etc. Love can be and take many shapes. Another example of how complex love as an emotion is, look at Naked Snake and The Boss' relationship. Many questioned if they were lovers, student and mentor, mother and son, etc. To my eyes, Denji and Power found an interesting blend of sibling and couple love. To a level truly like no other. Denji met a woman that was there for HIM, Power met a man that was there for HER (I guess in a sense, after they surpassed the: "What I want from you" barrier. Their bond began to strengthen). Regardless of intention, platonic or not. They both love each other. And, in essence, that love, that bond, is what kept Denji alive in the end. That crushing and painful hope of seeing her again, somehow, is keeping him alive. I really like the vid! People should start shipping less, and looking deeper into character relationships, and what is hidden beneath. Than going crazy for two characters that share the same air they breath, lol.

It’s an interesting video you got here. Honestly, I do like the idea you presented. The fact that all lust brings denji is misfortune and him learning that to actually feel fulfilled with a girl, you have to love each other emotionally, would be a great arc for denji, since even now he’s talking about getting 10 girlfriends (did you learn anything from makima, denji). I do think their relationship was platonic when she died, and I mostly chalked up the sexually explicit scenes to the irony of the sexually posing to contrast with how denji didn’t feel “hot”. But I cannot really say they are siblings either. Denji was expecting to be aroused when he sucked power’s blood and took a bath with her. You do not expect that you’ll get aroused from someone you view as a sibling, nor would you let a sibling lie on top of you naked. Denji’s feelings are unclear, because it could be just as you said, a sign of maturity that he is not taking advantage of power in her vulnerable state or just as easily could be he just can’t view her romantically. Power’s side is more interesting. She’s a fiend and she has no concept of relationships. She blushes a lot around denji, in the bath, at the cafe, etc. she clings to him, they’re close, we don’t know what she feels and we know that all she knows to express relationships is friendship. I’m holding on to that cafe scene because it seems the most like foreshadowing. Power is even blushing as she thinks the flowers are for her. Well when power comes back, effectively there’s gonna be a reset on their relationship, and their dynamics could be very different. I think the first sign we’ll know is if power comes back as a girl around denji’s age, and not as a kid or a man (lol). Nice video, keep it up.

I think the reason why a good part of the fandom refuse to believe there being a posible couple, it's because the manga broke so many steryotypes than we wait now the opposite of a normal shonen manga where the guy protagonist is interest in the girl portagonist. I'd like to think there is a simpler, subtler undertone in this. There are three women a boy meets on his way to becoming a man. The infatuation. The shining and impossible, terrifying perfection. Bourne of ignorance and romanticism. The first love. The one you "click" with. Who first forces you to participate in the game of courtship and romance and actual connection. And the deep bond. The one that you actually share experiences with. The one who you see enough of yourself in to both respect and loathe, as you do yourself. The one that were you to really ask who you'd rather spend your time around, is the one you have been deciding to spend your time with anyway. Power is a symbol, to me anyway, of what actual love is. Clumsy, crude, awkward. But genuine, selfless, and nurturing. You can not truly be in love with someone you would not see as your friend. I think that's where a lot of rhe Japanese interpretations of sibling connectivity gets muddled. Denji does love Power. And she loves him. Because they both spent the time and effort to see each other beyond those surface level delusions we all associate, and are deceived by, when we think of love. It is a messy and ugly thing in parts. But as you showed in your analysis, those intimate moments of honesty. Vulnerability. Trust. That is what makes a love. That's what they were to each other.

You can't just sweep that fact under the rug. It's already explained in the video as well, but when Denji is taking care of Power, his mind is in a very different place at that point in time than when the series first began. His sexual desires have been declining at this point as he is maturing as a character, his desire to become a protector and caretaker have taken the steering wheel which further proves that Denji is capable of discerning what is an appropriate time to be horny. For example, back when Denji lived In a shack, he was thinking about "scoring with a chick" nonstop. Not only do you see that interest fade as the series progresses, but he overall becomes a more compassionate individual, he even begins losing interest in Makima, the one who is blatantly promising him sexual rewards. This is probably the biggest sign that him not being attracted to Power is more than just his personal views of her, it's an overall change in him as a person, a growth spurt. When he says he feels nothing sexual about bathing with power, I don't view it as he doesn't find Power attractive, I view Denji as someone who's able to put all his carnel desires aside and focus on what's important in the moment. His inability to feel sexual towards her was simply him realizing that he is more than just a walking erection, it is his own major character growth. It says very little about how he actually views their relationship, we haven't completely gained that insight just yet into how he feels about her, we can only guess based on the foreshadowing the manga has provided us thus far, the flowers scene being very prominent. We only know that he has forgotten about horny to do what he felt was right, and I haven't seen a much better argument yet.

I think Power represents how true love is unexpected and comes out of nowhere. Denji is attracted to many superficial aspects of love like puppy love, manipulative love from Makima from older women, and his very immature feelings towards love. Power doesn't fit in any of those first mistakes people make. She's unlikable, dirty, wild, a liar but their connection to each other grew naturally just because of the time they spent together as friends. Their connection is a healthy growing rose bush grown under the right circumstances.

Denji and Power are both extremely immature and are still learning the concepts and confines of society. They both have never understood the concept of “love” or even true “friendship” so to say their dynamic is strictly platonic or romantic is shallow, whether its meant to be interpreted as both or maybe even neither. I think its a alot deeper than that but I definitely believe there is both very platonic and very romantic aspects of their dynamic, however the way Denji described his “dream girl” all the way from chapter 1, from “eating sliced bread together” or “playing video games in our room together” to “falling asleep in her arms” all things Denji had done only with Power but never realized it because he was always so infatuated with Makima. From Power’s standpoint as a fiend, she didn’t know how to show any other emotion beside her bloodlust and instinct to kill but the longer she had lived with Aki and Denji she had developed bonds with them in ways she never had, which again was foreshadowed from her introduction and relationship dynamic with Meowy in the very first arc (as she began to care for Denji and Aki, a human and a devil, two things she said she hated, just as much as she cared for Meowy). So point being, I don’t believe that Power and Denji had a sexual attraction towards eachother, they had a bond that ran so deep you almost can’t ignore the “romantic” chemistry even if neither ever addressed it. I mean they would sleep together leg locked and willingly allowed the other to suck out their blood. As I said the dynamic between Denji and Power is alot deeper than they were just “best friends/siblings” or that they were simply “in love”, and the way Fujimoto has set this up I’m almost certain he’s gonna put his own spin on this, only time will tell.

These "they're siblings" arguments mostly only come from the West. Idk why the Western audiences are so quick to label any close boy/girl relationships as "siblings" when neither of the characters even see each other as siblings nor are they related in any form. Sure if you wanna say that they're not romantically related, fine no big deal. But to treat these incredibly well written relationships down to just being "siblings" like is a huge disrespect to the author's writings.

*I agree with everything said in this video* It's so beautiful how Fujimoto writes. I find it truly crazy how people use Makima's words as if they are always right. She is the control devil and somehow it shows even outside of the manga. People who take her words and go with everything she does, is doing the same thing Denji did. A lot of people are "simps" for her because she has a charm that even I, as a fellow woman can see. She is a manipulater, she gives you what you want. She is tricky and she gaslights. She makes you believe things. She's toxic. Her saying that power is "a bratty little sister" is something that she planned but that doesn't mean it's true. People are blindly believing her and I find that insane. It's crazy because that shows just how great of an author Fujimoto is. He created a character that has the power to control people and that's exactly what she is doing. I have read this manga twice and each time I saw how Power and Denji love each other. You took all the examples I thought of and made a wonderful video on it. I am truly grateful someone else sees past their complicated relationship and understands it. I will go with Power and Denji being the best relationship, ship, or bond in the series cause they are healthy and have so much foreshadowing that I can't forget.

When I think about denji and power, I personally see family. They love eachother like one, not platonic, but also not quite romantic yet, at least from denjis part. I think power definitely had a crush on denji and I think denji hasn't had the experience to realize that romantic love can develop out of platonic love. All the romantic experiences he had by now where , quite frankly, disasterous. I personally want them to get together romantically, if thats a posibility, or at least be a family again.

I have mixed feelings on the ship. On one hand, I really enjoy their relationship as being platonic, but it could also work well as romantic. Like you explained in the video, it is a complicated relationship. Because of how complicated it is, it could work in many different ways and you can interpret the character's actions and thoughts in different ways. But after reading a bit of Fire Punch and seeing a bit of his other works I can definitely say one thing, Power and Denji having both a sibling and romantic dynamic is completely possible in the world of Fujimoto's writing.

I think people are too hung up in categorizing them as either siblings or potential romantic interests. Seems to me like a person finding someone physically attractive at first but then he gets to know the girl and cannot look at her in that way anymore. I do think there was potential in these two in the future, but as far as they got Denji didn’t see her that way so I’ll stick to platonic.

Filmbuff explained the need vs want in story telling pretty well in one of his recent FMAB reactions. Character will want to get x through the story only to keep failing. They will either undrstand through character growth and self reflection they actually need y or they will die persuing x (tragedy). If they choose y and let go x they can have a happy ending maybe even getting x desire fulfilled inadvertently.

This was beautifully explained and it’s something that a lot of people don’t even realize as adults. Intimacy has many forms, and what is developing between him and power goes beyond just teenage lustful thoughts, there was a connection developing between Denji and Power that was becoming stronger than some lustful desires he expressed for Makima or any other girl, or even Power at the beginning when wanting to touch her breasts. They have spent so much time together, power became so vulnerable around him, so many things. There’s no way you can say that there cannot be a romantic relationship between them. It’s probably intentionally ambiguous. But just because power calls him a “buddy” and a “friend”, doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on. I have experienced myself women calling me a friend but secretly wanting more and not being able to come to terms or express it at that time which is something power could have been going through. I love how thorough you are in your analysis. You are explaining back to me precisely what i love most about chainsawman. I never viewed Power and Denjis relationship as erotic but it certanly is not sibling like. Romantical is as you say still the perfect description as true love does not necessarily include sexual acts. Several scenes clearly does not portray them as siblings, they clearly love eachother but they also do not see eachother as their sibling. I would like to argue that their love for eachother is purer and more genuine than most fiction couples. Denji is driven by physichal desires but even in the most erotic situations they are in they do not feel for eachother in a sexual way. That is because their love is beyond physical and i think that is beautiful.
