Denmark has been a member of the EU since 1973, but prefers to keep its krone currency instead of the euro.
We take a look at life on the border between Germany and Denmark. Do the Danes now regret not having adopted the common currency? Or are they even happier about the decision?

The only reason Finland is in the Euro is because their people never got to vote on it. Swedes, Danes and Norwegians (of course) all put it to a vote, all rejected the currency.

makes a lot of sense in Norway when they aren't a EU member... and Sweden technically has to adopt the euro at some point on paper... there's no deadline though.

We don't have to worry about the exchange rate at all, since it's pegged to the euro, and the centralbank will keep the rate within an extremely narrow band.

Gina G Well before it would have been the Deutschmark we would have been peggez too then. You can't really use your currency as a policy instrument. We are not a southern European country who won't make the necessary economic reforms and use devalueation or other piss in your pants to get warm politcal tricks. Being pegged to Euro the Danish national bank also have an unlimited credit from the ECB to fight currency speculators. Something Amrican speculators learned the hard way recently when they made a failed run on the Danish Krone. So Denmark has the stability of a major currency but are not forced like the eurocountries to bail out German and French banks failed lending schemes in Greece.

Well the being able to buy 2 hotdogs in Berlin for the price of 1 in Denmark thing isn’t so much about the currency as it’s about the higher Danish taxes

DENMARK Leads TAXATION MEASURES, it knows its importance in Administration to EUROPEANS, in its economies, as TAXATION is divisible amongst its member EU countries, to GUARANTEE its formidable trade relations, trade practices, in exports, imports, and realization of its businesses standards in Taxes Administration.******IMPORTANT******

Not joining the Euro seems to be the best way to guarantee prosperity for your nation in the EU. Excepting Germany, where the EU makes your exports cheaper than they would be with marks.

euro has more value than mark. how come it could make the exports cheaper?

Long live the crown I can pay in euro at the supermarket in my town that’s in the country side. I’m just glad to have the crown as a currency. If not the crown then “rigs daler” or “skilling”

no they dont, they use the Krone, but in border areas they would accept euro, I live in Northern Ireland (United Kingdom) we use the Pound as our currency but near the border with the Republic of Ireland the euro is accepted as the Republic of Ireland uses the euro

They don't, but their central bank maintains almost fixed exchange rate since 1980 to deutsche mark and by extension to euro. So Danish krona is just euro in disguise.

Green Guy Because, when countries have the same currency, they have to follow the same economic policies as the dominant economy, in this case the austerity policies of Germany. Greece cannot compete in the world market, with the exchange-rate of the Euro. If they had kept their own Drachmer, they could choose to devaluate. The Danish economy is a lot more like that of Germany, so in fact the value of our currency, "Kroner" is tied to the Euro, but if needed , we could choose not to.

@@Charles10115-e Out of curiosity, why do you call me "blue guy"? When I started my respons with "Green Guy" , that was because the person I responded to was going by that username at that time. I always start with writing the username of the person I respond to, to avoid misunderstandings. Obviously I have no way of knowing, if people change their name, or even remove their comment. I see 4 years have passed since my comment.

The latest public opinion poll in Finland (made by the YLE: the state owned public radio/TV broadcast company, published 12.7.2012) 66% of the Finnish people are against all kind of Euro-zone-bailouts to the PIIGS-countries, even on condition, that the bailouts could “possibly” save the Euro-zone. 12% of the Finnish people don´t have opinion. Only 22% of the Finnish people support the bailouts. Then 60% of the Finnish people believe that the Euro-zone will break up during the next 2 years.
