Saw him this weekend and it topped every single Styx show I've been too! He's so much better and his new guitarist/singer August sings and plays Tommy Shaw's songs better than Tommy! It was mind blowing I was shocked when they started doing blue collar man and fooling yourself renegade crystal ball etc

God damn, DeYoung's still fucking got it. I saw Styx for the first time a couple years ago and it was truly an incredible show, but I have always been sad that DeYoung is not with them. Then I heard about DeYoung doing his own tours with his own band designed to look and sound like the other Styx members, and they sound incredible! I'm probably going to see them this weekend too!!

Amazing vocals. He's THE one and only voice of Styx. I've seen both Dennis and the "band" in concert within the past two months .. his vocals blow away anything that the other guys are doing. I enjoyed both shows, but DDY's vocals carry the music to a new level.
@avocate201710 жыл бұрын
His voice has held up remarkably well over the years. I can't believe he's 67 and still singing this way. I was never even a Styx fan back in the day, but there's no question that he's got amazing pipes. Can't even think of any other male rock vocalist who can sing like this in their late 60s (i.e. singing the songs in the original key, hitting the notes, etc.)
@fastappz227310 жыл бұрын
***** Couldn't agree more!! Have seen DDY many times over the past 10-15 years and he is always amazing. I will have to say however that there is one more who has been equally as remarkable through aging into the mid-late 60's and that is Klaus Meine of Scorpions. Check out their new album! Pretty incredible, and I give both of these great rockers tons of credit. Styx and Scorpions were my favorite rock bands growing up in the 70's and 80's and to still be able to enjoy the same voices with my kids is totally rad dude (haha 80's all over again). I must admit I have checked out some of the "new Styx" and I can't really stomach it...Gowan does his best DDY impression but must realize he will never replace the legend himself.
@avocate201710 жыл бұрын
FastAPPZ Yep, totally agree with you about Klaus Meine. He and DDY are probably the only male rock singers in their mid-to late-60s who can still sound anything close to what they sounded like in their heyday. I haven't heard the new Scorpions material, but the last time I saw them live, KM was 60 and still hitting all the notes. Had slightly less vocal power than he did before, but he was still hitting the notes.

***** For sure... one more who i also loved for so long is Lindsey Buckingham (65). Different singing style but he really does sound basically the same (not to mention he is still one of the most under-rated guitarists of all-time).

It's so cool, that Dennis' band is made up of guys who weren't born when Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight were produced. Dennis doesn't need JY or Tommy, they need him more than he needs them.

Seems they cosplaying being Styx. Heck, the additional keyboard guy looks like Lawrence Gowan too. Having said that, Dennis sounds great and the band is competent so no harm, no foul. Its like when two versions of YES were touring. More chances to see the music. I do prefer Lawrence and Tommy though, and Todd Sucherman and JY are miles better players.

Dennis put it out there 2 years ago but Tommy knows Dennis would take over again because it's just his way. How they won the rights to the name STYX since it was Dennis that formed the band in the 60's with the Panozzo brothers is strange. You know if they toured as Shaw/Young their venues would be significantly smaller.
@screwyootube110 жыл бұрын
Styx refuses to talk to Dennis. Even close friends of their family (not just Dennis' family, either) are stunned how they've completely shut him out. Is he arrogant, and a control freak? Yes, that's not up for debate. But they don't have to acquiesce to him. This goes deeper than that. Sadly, this is one of those band splits (sure seems to be a lot of them, doesn't it?) that looks like it won't ever heal. That said, it sure sounds good to hear Dennis sing his own songs! I'm OK with there being a Styx AND a "Dennis DeYoung featuring the music of Styx". Not the perfect situation, but good enough. By the way, I LOVE how Dennis has managed to find two guys that look a LOT like Tommy & JY to play their parts! I'd imagine they don't dig it, but I really don't care!
@rca1910 жыл бұрын
It's childish that the official Styx website has totally written DDY out of the group history. I think that the chances of any sort of reunion are virtually zero.

What a wonderfull voice. But why lookalike show on guitars.That is painfull like this "Thing" on his head. Styx was more that two guitars. There was two brothers. To DeYoung this history means nothing.

It's good but personally I'm tired of the same Styx songs over and over again for the last 30-40 years. Why can't Dennis compose new songs that are as good as the old ones? I guess he only had a few good albums worth of songs in him.
@woods209610 жыл бұрын
Check out his cd "100 Years From Now" from 2010 which people called the best "should be" Styx songs in decades. Dennis has also been offered a new music deal for a new cd from Frontiers which he's excited about. He said he doesn't play the new stuff live because people come for the classics. My personal favorite song of his is "Father O.S.A." from Styxll.
